"Mimi Mollica has returned time and time again to his native Sicily to observe its landscape of shadows and light, its everyday rituals and its sense of cultural and political stasis. As both a native and an exile, Mollica's visual narrative is a complex negotiation of his homeland and its singular place in our collective imagination. His photographs are often formally austere and his approach oblique rather than direct. This is a Sicily shadowed by its own reputation, a place at once familiar and unknowable, traced in metaphor and suggestion by Mollica's patient, attentive and often clandestine eye."

Sean O'Hagan, September 2016.

Terra Nostra

After 13 years living in London, I decided to work on a personal project on my homeland Sicily and photograph the signs of the destructive presence of Cosa Nostra in the island.

Pizzo Sella - Michele Greco's Christmas Tree.

“Terra Nostra” is the outcome of 7 years of work.

I looked at a region pervaded by lawlessness and disfigured by the legacy and repercussions of a system heavily controlled by the underworld.

Far from the glamorous image of gangsters portrayed by Hollywood movies, the reality is bleak, seedy and haunting. Cosa nostra infiltrated local administrations and served itself by influencing politics and the economy while ruling undisturbed throughout the territory.

I tried to capture Sicily’s characterising stillness in an effort to identify what, 20 years ago, pushed me to move abroad.
I looked at the architecture, people, routine and landscapes, photographing the problematic entanglement with the mob, focussing on the legacy of Mafia’s imprint in Sicily.

Terra Nostra is ultimately a labour of love towards a motherland I overwhelmingly feel attached to and with which I strongly, still identify myself. Tormented by a traumatic past and challenged by a difficult present my hopes are for Sicily’s bright side to become stronger and reclaim ownership of its land and protect its people, while keeping on distinguishing itself for its leading role in pursuing justice and equality.

The Book

Terra Nostra will be a beautiful hardback book printed in duotone by the world renowned art book printer EBS in Verona. Bound in cloth with foil stamping on the cover, it will include 60 duotone plates within its 128 pages. The book is being published by Dewi Lewis, who over the last thirty years has produced some five hundred photography books by leading photographers throughout the world. Dewi Lewis will personally work closely alongside me and will oversee every aspect of the production of the book.
