Want to double your BOB usage as a utility scooter? Do all this, and more, while adding a whole new dimension of experience with the Bobtail.
A year of intense prototyping, modelling, stress analysis, design, and testing has been invested to produce what we believe is of ultimate reliability and user friendliness.
The idea of a more efficient way to move around with a stroller was born on one of many strolls in our very own neighborhood. After much research, we came to realize that the kind of device we wanted simply didn’t exist. Before we started writing our patent application, we went through several phases of prototyping to ensure that we had a feasible concept.
As we invited friends and family to test our prototypes and provide valuable feedback, their excitement alone made us realize the potential of this product.
From our industry experience, we have learned that the best products are developed through many small learning cycles. Through simple prototypes, we circled in on today’s Bobtail which we believe is our best concept yet.
Although the first iteration of our device is targeted towards the BOB stroller, we are planning on supporting other stroller models in the future. Your feedback will help guide us to what the next model may be.
The Bobtail consists of a main tubular spine with a wooden deck foot rest, a pivoting front bracket that attaches to the stroller, and a rear wheel with a friction fender brake. A modular front bracket design will allow us to be compatible with different stroller types in the future.
Needless to say, we went through a lot of design iterations and built a lot of different prototypes before we ended up with our best Bobtail yet.
We have designed this product with our main focus on you the user. We knew that in order to get your support, it will need to be easy to use and reliable. A great deal of design effort was put into how easy it would be to install, remove, and swing out of the way when you don’t use it. It also needed to be portable and safe, and it sure wouldn’t hurt if it was cool looking too. All of this wouldn’t matter of course if we can’t produce it for a reasonable price. Among our biggest challenges so far has been to design something that can be produced in a relatively low quantity without requiring too much custom tooling.
With plenty of design experience from the technology industry, we knew that every design choice comes with trade-offs. Below are some of the thought processes we went through when designing Bobtail.
Robustness vs weight. Although we had a desire to keep the weight low, we did not want to compromise robustness for weight. The tubular steel frame offers exceptional strength to weight ratio and ensures that it can stand up to the wear and tear one may expect for a device like this. Careful analysis was completed on every component to verify its performance.
Pneumatic vs solid tire. We long considered a pneumatic wheel for the Bobtail but decided to go with a solid wheel for maintenance reasons. A tire this size requires frequent air fill ups and repairing a flat is time consuming. After all, we want you to spend your precious time on your kids, not on maintenance. The solid tire chosen for Bobtail ensures a smooth ride while requiring zero upkeep.
Brakes. Lots of brake types such as drum, band, disk, rim, and even electromechanical brakes were considered for the Bobtail. In the end, we felt that the proven fender friction brake was the best choice for this device. The fender brake requires no adjustments and is practically maintenance free. It is strong enough to lock up the wheel and offers a very intuitive way to apply braking force. In addition, the fender brake may be used in conjunction with the stroller’s own brakes if so equipped (such as BOB Revolution Pro and BOB Sport Utility)
The Bobtail will be offered in different color options to match your BOB stroller. You will be able to select you color during the survey at the end of the campaign.
Safety is obviously of utmost importance when including our children in activities such as biking, scootering, or in this case, strolling. The stroller’s seat belts and the safety strap should be worn at all times and the speed shall be kept low to avoid accidents. We find the Bobtail to operate best at medium to high jogging speeds. Fast enough to cover a lot of ground, but slow enough to remain in control should any obstacle get in your way. The stroller’s front wheel may be locked forward for increased stability at higher speeds. Under no circumstances, should the Bobtail be used on steep downhill surfaces with children on board. Use common sense and you will stay safe!
In order to achieve reasonable pricing on a product like the Bobtail, production quantities have to be large. Starting small by selling in low quantities would simply not be cost effective. And this is where Kickstarter and its community comes in. We can only be successful in bringing this product to the market if enough backers are willing to support us.
Risks and challenges
As with any new product, a lot of things can go wrong during the manufacturing and assembly phase. Although we have mitigated our risk by doing our due diligence during the design phase, there is always a risk that some parts are either late, incorrect, or both.
During our years of product development, we have seen how important it is to stay on top of everything from documentation to our vendors and we intend to use our experience to work through the challenges that arise. Our goal is obviously to deliver a quality product on time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
