About this project
The 'field of flowers' 7" vinyl single set has been a project we have always wanted to do, but we never thought possible. For anyone familiar with the music of shalloboi, short songs are not something we typically record. Though we've always loved the 7" format, the length of our songs has prevented us from being able to release our music this way - our songs were just too long to fit on one side!
In 2010, we had a breakthrough - without even trying, our songs were finally getting to a length that would fit on a 45. Once we realized this, we began to work on a group of seven songs with the idea of releasing them as a set of singles, each with unique artwork, rather than combining them all into one full-length LP. Our vision was that the songs would be a cohesive work, but the format would allow them to exist on their own or as a whole.
The songs were recorded very quickly over the next six or seven months (give or take), during which we had a trio of strings players. Soon after, the strings trio parted ways with the band and we shelved the finished songs for the next year while we figured out our next step.
We came back to the songs a year later and realized we still wanted to release them as originally envisioned. We decided the best way to raise the money was through kickstarter, since we just didn't have the funds to self-finance this series of releases.
The money that we're trying to raise would be enough to pay for the first two singles; any extra money raised would be put into the project to fund the rest of the remaining singles. Since we're not into high-stakes betting, we thought it would best to set a modest goal with the hope of exceeding it, allowing us to fully realize this dream. We would also like to compensate those who contributed to this project, since they have donated several hours of their time to playing shalloboi songs over the years.
This project is unique because we've already done the hardest work - writing, recording, mixing and mastering the songs. They are 100% ready to be pressed to vinyl. We're very proud of these songs, as they capture the spirit and excitement of that period of time in the band before everyone moved on to the next thing. We would like to share this music that means so much to us with the hope that it means something to those who listen to it, too.
Most of our rewards include releases from our back catalog; we're looking at this not only as an opportunity to fund our current project, but also as a way to spread our music and say "thank you" to anyone who chooses to contribute to our project.
We are very thankful for your support. Whether we meet our goal or exceed it, we look forward to the day we have freshly-cut 7" singles in hand!
We'll also be sure to thank all of our wonderful backers by name on a dedicated page on shalloboi.com!
Risks and challenges
There aren't really a lot of risks involved in our project. The music for the singles has been mixed and mastered and it only needs to be pressed to vinyl. I plan on silk-screening the covers myself and have most of the supplies I need to get started right away on that. It will be a challenge to keep up with the demand if it's high, but I have everything I need to get started right away. The main challenge will be funding the pressing for the last two singles, but the release schedule we have planned is far-reaching and we will have time to work out the particulars as they come up. I have a great love and appreciation for vinyl, so putting out a quality product is my number one concern.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
