About this project
A Photo Book of Dice A crazy idea? Yeah, it’s definitely unusual. A photo book about dice. People’s first response when they hear about the project is typically, “What did you say?” After they see the pictures, the questions change to “When is the book coming out?” and “Can we buy these as prints, too?”
I’ve been playing table-top board games and role playing games since I was a kid, and they’ve always been a huge part of my life. And wherever there is gaming, there are dice. First just a few, and then more, until it develops into a whole collection . An article for the Swedish gaming magazine Fenix on dice containing a few images prompted an idea from the editors that there should be a whole photo book on the subject, and now, six months and hundreds of hours of photography later, we’re ready to complete it.
This book is an homage to the ultimate symbol of table-top and role-playing-game culture. Starting with the color, form and function, I let the dice inspire me. Random chance, luck and probability have even permeated my approach to photography. The work has aroused thoughts on matters of order and chaos, determinism and free will. These subjects too will be a common thread throughout the book. What, of our reality, is just a consequence of a billiard game of atoms and planets following the Big Bang, and what can we actually influence and control? Dice are so much more than just small pieces of plastic. Each set is a work of art and this book will attempt to show that to the world.
Now we’d love your help to finish this project together. The book and prints can be ordered via our Kickstarter project “Dice – Rendezvous with Randomness”. We’re thrilled with the pictures and we hope you will be too!
The photographer and writer behind
Dice – Rendezvous with Randomness
Below you can see the covers and some excerpts from the upcoming art book (preliminary design). With your help, we wish to bring the best of the photographs into an artbook full of of dice. The photographs are all real and not manipulated, and the dice will be presented as you have never seen them before. If this project is funded, this coffee table book (26 cm wide and 25 cm high) will be printed on a minimum of 144 pages, on 150 gr quality paper and collected in hard covers. If the Kickstarter goes well, we have stretch goals that will unlock additional pages.
Since this is a photobook of dice, you will find dice details for each photo.
All pledges that include a printed copy of Dice – Rendezvous with Randomness will get a pdf-file of the book as well.
If you want more than one book, you can choose to increase your pledge with this add on. Even if you order several books, you still only have to pay for shipping once.

If you want the book and some of the art, simply choose the pledge of your choice and add the cost for the art prints or posters as stated below.

You got a wide variety of photographs to choose from for the prints and posters. You can add as many as you want to, as long as you pay the cost for each one.
When the Kickstarter has ended, we will send out a survey where you can tell us which of the photos you want your prints or posters to be.

These photos have been shot with a Nikon D7000 and edited in Lightroom. Variables like contrast, white balance, noise reduction and color balance have sometimes been changed to enhance the photos. Important though, NO Photoshop have been used and NO techniques where you add things that weren't there from the beginning. Mostly the lenses 'Micro Nikkor 40mm f/2.8G" and Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G have been used.
The artist and photographer behind this book is Måns Danneman. He is a role player, photographer and psychologist with a big appetite for new ideas and experiences. Måns finds a way to make art out of dice, photographing them in situations and at angles you never really seen before.
Tove and Anders Gillbring are role playing game developers and publishers, with a soft spot for good quality artwork related to gaming. They have over a decade of experience of printing game books and magazines through their company Åskfågeln Publishing.
This is a global campaign, meaning we can send the books anywhere you are located. Shipping charges are added when you select your pledge option, based on country of destination:
Sweden 60 SEK
UK 75 SEK [Approx. 6 GBP]
EU 120 SEK [Approx. 13 EURO]
United States 100 SEK [Approx. 12 USD]
Rest of the World 180 SEK [Approx. 22 USD]
Risks and challenges
After working hundreds of hours on this project, Måns has a catalogue of thousands of photos we will choose from for the book. We will however not finish it until after the summer, since that is the only season not yet caught on camera for this project.
Printing could be a hassle, but Åskfågeln has extensive experience after decades of printing game books and the Swedish gaming magazine Fenix. We will follow the process with the printer closely to make sure a high quality end result is achieved.
Åskfågeln has previously made other crowdfunding campaigns, which all are either fulfilled or in the midst of fulfillment as we speak. We have learned some of the ghastly things that can go wrong with International shipping the hard way, and will make sure not to end up in that kind of problems again. We have chosen to cooperate with GamingQuest to fulfill the shipping for this campaign.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
