What if you had an unlimited access to the LARGEST ONLINE MOVIE LIBRARY EVER? A community based library, where you could watch any movie online. A library where you could swap films with contributors all over the world and discover an infinite number of stories. This is the revolutionary idea behind MovieSwap.
To make such a dream come true, we worked on a collaborative and crowdsourced approach. Why? Because during the last 15 years, over 25 billion DVDs were sold worldwide. Those movies are now waiting for a second life and MovieSwap is the solution.
Today, we're all set... but definitely need your support to make it real. Are you ready to free the movies with us?
MovieSwap will be a subscription-based service... BUT all of the Kickstarter backers will be considered "founding members": they will be granted a 6 months exclusive full access to the early beta version available this summer... and then they will get FREE access to MovieSwap for LIFE.
MovieSwap will be available on PC, Mac, Android tablets and of course on TV thanks to our HDMI SwapStick.
It's simple and fair: It's exactly like in real life, when you trade a book, swap clothes or give an object to a friend. With MovieSwap, you will be able to swap films with any member of the community. You want to watch a movie? Look if the film is available on the online library and swap it instantly in just one click! You don't even need to wait for the other user's approval (he already agreed to make his DVD swappable). It's that simple!
The video below shows the actual process (it's just a draft, we're still working on the User Interface):
Users can choose to either contribute to this Kickstarter campaign and receive some DVDs in their digital library, or send in their physical DVD collections in order to enjoy them or swap them with the community. This process ensures that users are always swapping one DVD for another, thus making the process legal.
As MovieSwap is building its library from individuals’ personal collections, there will soon be the largest film choice ever, ranging from mainstream to indie titles.
Any question? Feel free to ask in the comments section.
"Hats off to the MovieSwap team for having the guts to put together something as innovative as this. It’s not only a brilliant use for a dying format but also an excellent way to make use of already-paid-for content that people have lying around their homes. There’s no doubt that the public will absolutely love this service." – TorrentFreak
"The campaign is till in its early days too, and will come to a close next month on April 15. So unless something goes drastically wrong, the campaign will be a success." - DigitalTrends
"MovieSwap on Tuesday launched a Kickstarter campaign (...) backers are promised free access for life after the service first lauches in beta this summer." - Variety
"MovieSwap says that during the last 15 years, over 25 billion DVDs were sold worldwide with many remaining unwatched. This is why the new service could become the perfect solution." - DailyStar
My momma always said, "Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you gonna get". Well with MovieSwap you do. Here are the details:
The process is quite simple, actually, it's fully based on those good old DVDs, that were sold by billions over the past 15 years... but are now going obsolete :(
Because people already PAID for them, we invented a fair way to give them a brilliant second life. That's the logistical and technical basis of MovieSwap, which is ready to:
- 1. collect millions of DVDs from all over the world
- 2. register them on behalf of their owners
- 3. put them into the cloud
- 4. store them in warehouses
- 5. and remotely play them on any device across their personal libraries.
Then, just like you can legally lend, swap, or offer a DVD to a friend, MovieSwap works in the same way, but on a much larger scale thanks to its remote playback technology.
Additionally, users can get the full DVD experience including bonuses, deleted scenes, director's commentaries, and other unique features not available when streaming videos online.
The service will be available on PC, Mac, Android tablets and of course on TV thanks to our HDMI SwapStick.
Our best friend is the famous VLC video player, that has been downloaded over 1 billion times in the world. Just like it allows to read a DVD on any device, it now can read them over the internet. And guess what? VLC was born in France, just like us ;)
A 15 people team is already behind the project : software engineers, warehousemen, project managers... Here are the leaders of this incredible and passionate team.
Those four bearded friends previously founded Vodkaster, a famous social and disruptive marketplace for French movie buffs. They've been working for the last 2 years on the technology and logistics behind MovieSwap, that now can collect millions of DVDs from around the world, register, store and play them remotely to their owners on any device. They were waiting for you, guys.
Cyril Barthet, aka a Serious Man
Cyril is 40 and is leading the MovieSwap team. He likes to talk to investors, lawyers and bankers, and has a strong track record as business executive and lobbyist in the film industry. He's got a Bachelor in Management and is graduated in intellectual property law from La Sorbonne - where he now teaches film economics and disruption. A f***ing serious man.
Julien Navas, aka Mac Gyver
Julien is our master of logistics, innovations and hacks at MovieSwap. He's never got problems, but only smart solutions. Very smart, indeed. He's graduated in chemistry and process engineering. Have you ever seen a swiss knife with a big beard?
Chris Navas, aka the Architect
Chris is patiently building the technical MovieSwap foundations since 2013, after working for 10 years at Alcatel-Lucent as an R&D engineer. He would love to see a chess play between HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey and WORP from Wargames.
David Honnorat, aka Fantastic Mister Fox
Web-designer and film critic, David is our content guy. A few years ago he designed a subway map for the best movies of all time (using IMDb's top 250) which went viral several times since then. Unconditional fan of Steven Soderbergh, François Truffaut and Brian De Palma, David is also the co-writer of a critical analysis book about director M. Night Shyamalan. Don't get him started on the subject!
Thank you for helping us make this project come true! (You can also put a link to your creations here)
Risks and challenges
The project may look crazy... But it has the means of its ambition, and is held by an experienced team with a global and collaborative vision, which previously founded VodKaster.
MovieSwap has developed its technology and logistics for the last two years, thanks to its R&D team. It has partenered with the leading video software VLC, and already tested its business model in France with more than 200,000 DVDs already gathered.
MovieSwap is also strongly advised and based its approach on a fully legal basis, combining two legal concepts known as "first sale doctrine" and "fair use".
Financially speaking, MovieSwap is already backed by investors that can support a quick growth and help to power up the project... But it needs first a large and enthusiastic movement from thousands of viewers from all over the world to kick it. That's your job, folks!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
