How do some plays make it to Broadway, get performed all over the country, or get published? The process of making a play can be a long road. It starts with a playwright and an idea. And lots and lots of paper.
Elements Theatre Collective presents Training: the Musical by Joe Schermann. Since the beginning of March, we've been meeting with Joe via skype, listening and reading as he writes and prepares for the workshop.
The purpose of this workshop is to support Joe and premier a new promising work. Elements will provide him with the space, the talent and the time to refine Training into a musical that will be ready for a full production. Each day in rehearsals, we will go through the play and make changes. The actors will input their ideas, and Joe will be able to hear his words sung and spoken out loud for the first time. The workshop will culminate in a staged reading with a live audience, who will offer their reactions to the play. This feedback is an incredibly valuable and informative part of the play-making process.
Training is Elements first step into the world of musical theatre and we're excited to be making that step with such a wonderful piece and talented new composer.
Training: the Musical
Training, a new musical from composer/lyricist Joe Schermann, serves as a witty, charming and sometimes brutally honest observation of the habits and values of today's young adults in New York City. This ensemble piece, set entirely on the 2 and Q trains of the Big Apple's subway line, features a diverse cast of characters: a freelance musician, a pair of restaurant workers, a well-paid photo-retoucher and his not-quite-engaged-to girlfriend, a homeless pan-handler, an office worker, and a quirky young woman who rides the trains just for the sake of riding trains are among the strange to seemingly ordinary people you'll meet on this line. Many questions will be asked, some may be answered. Some people will grow out of their habits and cycles, others will just keep riding the same train over and over again. Such is New York. Such is life.
Training features the surgically clever lyrics and infectiously unique melodies of composer/lyricist Joe Schermann, and also marks his professional debut as a musical theatre book-writer.
Don't you want to see this show! So do we! We can't wait to bring this production to Santa Barbara, but we need your help to do it. Every playwright dreams of having the opportunity to have resources provided and have their only job be to focus on their work. Please help us make this dream come true, and bring a fresh and bright, world premier musical to Santa Barbara.
When workshopping any new theatrical work, changes are constantly being made to the script. Changes mean more copies and copies mean more money. And as always, Elements is committed to paying our artists. By backing this project you're helping us write their paychecks! Our actors thank you, and so do we!
