The Dissolving Landscape - Expedition to the Arctic Circle

CA$ 8,312

I have been invited to participate in my dream artist residency, The Arctic Circle program, a three-week expedition led by artists and scientists aboard a Barquentine tall ship sailing through the Svalbard Archipelago. The expedition will take place from September 30th - October 19th, 2016, beginning and ending in Longyearbyen, Norway, located just twelve degrees from the North Pole. I am seeking funds to cover the cost of The Arctic Circle program fee, which covers room and board on the ship for the duration of the voyage. Any money raised beyond my primary goal will help to cover airfare to and from Svalbard, as well as photographic material expenses.

During the residency, I will shoot imagery for my upcoming project The Dissolving Landscape, a series of analogue photographs and video that will use experimental film techniques to examine the Arctic landscape. Prior to arriving in the Arctic, I will soak my film in acidic solutions to achieve colour shifts that make the images appear surreal and degraded. Upon returning from my trip, I will process the images, through darkroom and digital experimentations, to present photographic works and a Super 8 film. The colour shifts and warping of the film will emphasize the complex relationship humans have with this landscape, which involves awe, admiration and exploitation.

I recently read Arctic Dreams by Barry Lopez, which deepened my knowledge of the history of the Arctic. Lopez suggests that the landscape exists as both a physical place and a space within the human imagination, remarking that both our inner and outer perceptions of the landscape affect how we treat it. It is in this sense that I intend for my art to act as poetic activism, to both capture the imagination of my audiences and to inspire in them an appreciation of the Arctic. The Dissolving Landscape will speak to pertinent social issues about the impending effects of global warming in the Arctic.

Since my practice focuses on themes of space, place and landscape, I am highly reliant on travel experiences for the creation of new work, and the Arctic has loomed large in my mind for several years. Opportunities to travel to the Arctic are difficult to obtain, and the chance to work with an esteemed group of artists and scientists will surely enhance and strengthen my creative process. I am committed to making the most of this once in a lifetime opportunity by thoroughly preparing and carrying out my plans for The Dissolving Landscape. Your support will make this possible.

Risks and challenges

Since the Arctic Circle is a well-established program, there aren't any significant risks or challenges beyond fundraising for the trip. I have experience photographing in very cold climates, so provided that I meet my Kickstarter funding goal, it should be "smooth sailing!"
