[ Dev Update ]

 Hi everyone,

Wow, sorry! We had meant to post quite a few mini updates over the last few weeks, but time slipped away from us.

Maho has been in Germany at Gamescom, Tokyo Dark is playable at PAX right now and I've been working with the unsung heroes of gamedev; the QA team at Square Enix, who have been putting Tokyo Dark through all sorts of pre-launch tests.

Good news is everything is looking great for launch this week.

Our Steam page is live here:

You'll notice that there is a Collector's Edition on Steam. This includes a 62 (!!!) track, (over 2 hours long) 'double CD' digital OST featuring remixes, extended versions of in-game music & all sorts of sonic goodness along with a 50 page PDF artbook.

All [ Digital + pack ] tier backers & above will receive an upgrade to the CE version of the game.

For those of you who backed at [ The Game ] tier, don't worry! You'll be able to pick up an upgrade pack for the collectors edition so you can get all the extra awesomeness without having to pay for the game twice. If you like what we've been doing and enjoy Tokyo Dark this upgrade is a great way to support Cherrymochi and help us fund game 2.

For those of you who opted for a non-Steam version unfortunately we heard some disappointing news that the platform we had hoped to release on feels that Tokyo Dark has too much in common with Japanese visual novels (well it is a visual novel / adventure game hybrid) and as such does not suit their current store policy of no VNs.

They let us know late in the process. But fear not! We'll get your builds out to you. Our goal is within 2 weeks of Steam launch, so you won't have to wait long. Sorry for the delay.

Note: due to legalities of publishing it is not as easy as just putting a build up for sale on any platform we like. The process of arranging contracts for these things takes time.

By the end of September we hope to be working on the Mac build. No ETA for Mac release yet, but we'll keep you updated.

For Mac backers when you receive your Steam Key this week feel free to register it (and play the Windows version if you have access to a Windows PC too) as all Steam keys will give you access to both Windows and Mac builds.

 [ Launch ]

Our team and Square Enix Collective are spread out between Japan, UK and USA, so though we'll be launching on Thursday 7th September, don't wait up for a midnight launch where you are! By Friday 8th Tokyo Dark will be available in all regions.

We'll get your Steam keys out to you via email and will send out Kickstarter messages to let you know they've been sent ( just in case they slip into your email junk folder).

[ Updates going forward ]

26 monthly updates and 111 weekly forum updates later and we're finally at release. We hope you've enjoyed following us on this journey and we really hope you'll enjoy playing Tokyo Dark. You'll be hearing from us less regularly from this point, we'll pop up whenever we have news, rather than fixed scheduled updates.

It's been an amazing journey and we can't begin to explain how much we appreciate the opportunity to make Tokyo Dark that your support has granted us. Also, thank you for being an awesome, understanding and genuinely lovely community. Your comments, feedback and kind words during development that have kept us going through the highs and lows.

We are proud of the game we have made and we hope you enjoy it.

Thank you.

The game is overall nice, but honestly wish you made more of the SPIN system. As it is now you barely notice it, sure there are some things which can give point for neurosis at the start, but since you can´t really travel to more than specificly designated points in town - and you can only ask so many things to people - it is the only point where that comes up. Similar with professionalism, easier to lose it than gain it and it only seem that investigation is so freely given to balance out for taking the medicin to counter sanity lose.
So to repeat - game is good, just wish you made that system work better.

I'm glad I backed this game. I've already finished most of the endings and I really liked it. I'll be glad to buy the next game you make.

I just saw an article on Kotaku showing off the game! The day has finally come for it to see the light of day to the public! Good luck on your guys' launch! Cannot wait to play it! =D

Humble Bundle does VN games and drm free why not just do it there?

      And was talking about GOG?

This might be a bit late to ask... but is it still possible to sing up for the Tokyo Dark backer's forum?
I just noticed that I never made an account, so when I tried signing up it said that my Invitation Code is "not valid"... I know it's been a few years and I'm a bit out of the loop on this... but did something happen to the backer's forum? is it still possible for me to sign up for an account?

YES! Been waiting patiently for so long, can't wait to play!!! :D

Finally the day has come. Looking back on the long journey. However, When I look back, I feel like that passed in an instant.
Thanks to all of work of you guys.
      I enjoy it!

Yeah! I'm happy the developement is finish and we can play i, but I'll miss the monthly updates from you :)

GOG turned this game down for being a visual novel (which it's not) and, yet, they have both Hatoful Boyfriend games in their store. Sometimes, their hypocrisy is unbelievable.

Congratulations, I hope all will go well!

Why do you even need to release it on a store with exclusionary policies? What's wrong with the Humble store, or just I am at a loss, throughout this whole process, for why it seems to be so hard for your team to figure out how to release DRM-free. Tons of indie developers do it all the time with no problems.

    16. SweetLilyCake on

Yay!! So happy we finally get to play it!

    17. Ernesto Ramirez on

Excellent! Looking forward to playing it.

      Ahhh so amazing ❤️ I can't wait

    20. Jimbotherisenclown on

Well, if GOG is out, maybe the Humble Store will remain an option.

    21. Vincent Mak

That's strange. I wonder why this specific platform banned visual novels. Anyway, great to hear that it's almost out. It's been a long journey. I can't wait to try it.

    22. Benjamin Parker on

Hooray! I was afraid when my gaming laptop broke i wouldn't be able to play this, but since you guys will have both a Windows and MAC version, I can play this when MAC version pops up on my steam account.

"... the platform we had hoped to release on feels that Tokyo Dark has too much in common with Japanese visual novels [...] and as such does not suit their current store policy of no VNs."

      In other words, GOG?
