Tipsy is a Wine Tasting Glass Designed to experience wine through all your senses. Through its shape, we hope to have created a balance between joyful design with an increased functionality. We want Tipsy to become the testing tool of wine connoisseurs and wine lovers.
"The Tipsy Wine Glass is a paradigm of how really a wine should be tasted or tested for that matter."
1. HOW IT WORKS
The glass' unique angle allows you to see the color and texture of the wine without the distortion of the crystal. The first thing a professional taster would do is to look at the density of the liquid on the glass: for instance if a wine is obscure, it’s usually suffering from some sort of malady and will not taste very good. If a wine, red or white is much browner than you would expect, then it is possibly oxidized. In a lot of cases the vessel that holds the wine changes the way we perceive the color and texture. For this reason, Tipsy gives you a direct view inside the glass.
As you swirl the wine, molecules of the wine explode as they hit the walls of the glass, releasing its unique aroma. With Tipsy, you can swirl the glass in two ways: by holding it from its neck and angling it slightly up and then using the movement of your wrist or by holding it from its base. Then you simply lift the glass towards your face and the entire vapor will be projecting towards your nose.
Tipsy is designed for tasting wine in small amounts. The glass itself can house 3.8 ounces of wine and the shape works with its volume to allow for the right amount of wine to be sipped. The reason for this is that you don’t want your tasting glands to be overwhelmed by the liquid, but instead let it spread through the mouth evenly. Depending on the occasion you can swallow it or spit out it nicely.
We now need your help to fund the manufacturing costs. Our largest expenses come from the tooling of the molds to be able to keep the quality and fidelity to the design to the highest standards. We partnered with one of the leading glass manufacturers in the world, Rogaska who helped us refine all the manufacturing details for large volume production. We have been able to with the help of family and friends make an initial order and be able to fulfill the order of the supporters during the holiday season, but we need your support to get a larger volume of Tipsy.
Our first physical reward is a specially made marker in the shape of Tipsy. Each marker is laser cut to its special shape and in black and white as well as in multiple selected colors. Our limited edition Tipsy Glow in the Dark Marker is 3D printed, and you will be amazed of how much it glows.
Our second set of rewards include the Tipsy Wine Tasting Glass in its elegant tube packaging with multiple options of customization to give as a gift. We placed a small order of 300 glasses specifically to offer our supporters an opportunity to buy them and give them as a gift. So don’t miss out on the first order of this year.
3. LIMITED EDITION: TIPSY IN BLACK
We created a limited edition version of Tipsy in Black. The black captures Tipsy's iconic shape into a timeless and modern piece of art and craft. We are only going to create TEN (10) of these and we will never make them again. Each glass will have an etched number in the bottom of the glass based on its number of the series. Each Tipsy Limited Edition will come in a unique premium packaging.
The initial design for Tipsy was meant to be made out of one single bubble of glass. However, when pulling the stem, the shape of the vessel lost its rounded and iconic shape. This is when when we opted for a two-piece construction. Precision and quality were always important factors during the development of Tipsy. So we prototyped Tipsy’s vessel and stem multiple times to get not only the right proportions but also the best connection between them.
5. HOW IT IS MADE
Tipsy is hand blown out of molten glass on a hot furnace over 1112°F. Hand blown glass is one of the oldest techniques of glass production. Our manufacturers in Slovenia have many years of expertise in working with glass and are able to accomplish astonishing precision with only hand tools.
The glass is first picked from the hot furnace with a blown iron, which is constantly rotated by the glassblower to keep its center of gravity and prevent the glass from dripping to the ground. He then inserts the glob into a mold that has the shape of the glass. The resulting piece is then cut and put into a cooling chamber where the glass cools at a controlled temperature.
6. FULFILLMENT PLAN
For international shipping, the orders will be sent out at the same time however, please account for some additional time (10-15 days) since we will be using USPS for all of our deliveries.
MARKERS: For our first set of Markers we have teamed up with 3D NYC LAB in Brooklyn, for laser cutting all the small Tipsy markers. We will be printing the Glow in the dark markers with our in-house 3D printers.
*Please note that this markers will be delivered within the month of December, this means that the delivery date will not necessarily be before Christmas, although we will try our best to get it to you by then.
TIPSY GLASS: We have placed an order which will start production by early December, this will go to our supporters who wish to give Tipsy as a holiday gift. We are confident we will deliver by the expected date, but in case things get tipsy, we will give our faithful backers an additional set of markers in addition to the one that comes with the set.
With the support of the campaign we will then be able to get a larger order to deliver our orders by Valentines day (Feb 2014).

PACKAGING: We already have our packaging set up, all we need now is to give the good to go and we will have it in no time. For our premium versions of the tubular packaging, we will require that you send us your custom message one month after the end of the campaign.
7. WHO WE ARE
We are a Product Design studio focused in product development services for household products, furniture, tabletop, and packaging. We have a large history of working with glass and multiple glass manufacturers and for this reason it made sense to give one of our own products an opportunity. We have been awarded the Red Dot Design Award for our concept furniture and exhibited in multiple venues as well as published in various magazines and blogs.
Thank you to all our partners who helped us make this campaign possible, and bring Tipsy to you via Kickstarter.
Risks and challenges
Our biggest challenge was to achieve a perfect rounded vessel which, would not be affected at the joint where the stem was added. Using state of the art technology, the vessel and the stem are joined with UV glue, making a seamless union and maintaining the purity of the form.
We have tried to anticipate problems and challenges prior to launching as to eliminate them during the campaign. We already have a stock of specific packaging that fits the glasses perfectly as well as a tested and approved batch of glasses. If anything changes with the shipping or the production of the glasses, we will update our Kickstarter campaign in real-time (however, we do not anticipate any changes to take place judging by the way everything stands right now).Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
