I plan to make and release a 30-40 minute genre film every month, then release them directly to the web and mobile devices. Most of the stories and characters will be completely different for each new film. But I will have some of the characters drifting into another story from time to time. Basically, this will be like a mini movie a month! Shot, posted, and released to the web-mobile devices
These films will kick off in the UK, then the plan is to spread to the US, and eventually European countries too. If I reach the £7000 target in this campaign, I will be able to produce the first four films in the UK. This can help kickstart this whole plan, build community, and secure more supporters for the next films in April 2013. This funding will show how I can make 4 films in 4 months, which in turn can build more support for the bigger US shoot in May 2013
All the 30-40 minute films will have their own individual titles. But the "City Of Sin" name is the branded destination title. In the same way the anthology series "The Twilight Zone" was the brand name for that universe of suspense stories.
By creating this branded destination for all my films, it means I don't need a new website, and facebook page for every film. They are all under the umbrella of "City of Sin" A branded destination that can be promoted to cultivate fans of genre stories in the one space.
If this campaign is successful, I am in preproduction after this campaign for a Dec-Jan shoot. A film will be shot and released by the end of each month. The first one will be shot and released in January, then the others Feb, March, April.
This budget funds 4 films, that cover to April 2013. I will use the making of these films and the films themselves to build the audience for stage (2) funding in April. If this current kickstarter target goes over to £20,000, that automatically covers the production for another 5 films in the USA.
Either way, I am confident the 4 films that this campaign would fund, would get this project rolling. If I couldn't raise enough to go to the US later, then I continue with stories in the UK until I can.
Crime, Horror, Suspense, Film Noir, Sci-Fi, Erotic Fiction. The goal is to experiment with new and sub genres too in the future. I also want to reinvent genres.
The main goal is to start building this anthology of stories with new talent from cities all over the world. However, I have also started to attract names to various stories. It will be be a mixture of both. New and established talent.
I don't want to release all the details of my first films. I obviously want to keep some mystery before they are released. However, backers will get to see the UK film breakdowns in private updates over the next few days.
I have released a couple of the US based story pitches below. ( These US films get made in stage (2) of the campaign, or if this campaign more than doubled the target on this campaign)
Actor-Stand-Up comedian KEVIN POLLAK "The Usual Suspects". "Casino", "A Few Good Men", "Comedy Central 's Top 100 Stand-ups of All Time" is attached to one of the stories.
The lead character "Nicky Angel" in "SOLD OUT" Schedule permitting and obviously if I can make the target on this campaign. He loves the story and character.
A story about a Bill Hicks like character who can't get on TV anymore because of his rants about the world. He's broke, so his agent gets him a deal in Vegas to play to a mainstream audience. He does a deal with the devil to play in Vegas for 15 years, but then wants to get out of his contract.
"SOLD OUT" is a black comedy in the style of Jack Lemmon movies.
"VEGAS PENTHOUSE MASSACRE" is about a gang of armed men who storm a corporate party in Vegas. The gang leader wanted to strike at the CEO of the company at most vulnerable time. He has all his business associates, family, friends, and children at the companies 25th anniversary.
This will be a strong character driven film, but also an edge of the seat exploitation thriller. The lead will be horror star. Bill Oberst Jr. He stars in slate of horror movies and the Facebook Emmy Award winner film "Take this lollipop". He also might play "The Devil" in "SOLD OUT"
You can contribute to this project for the rewards on the right hand side of this page. These range from products from the project, to product placements, extra roles, credits in the films, and even launch party invites. Kickstarter has raised multi millions over the last 3 years for creative projects. From modest amounts, to over $10m for a watch!
You are pledging at this stage. If we don't make the target by the deadline, your credit card is not charged. We lose all the pledges.
David Paul Baker
David is the creator and driving force behind City of Sin. He has three feature films to his credit. PASTY FACES, MISSION X, and SCREEN. He has spent the last few years learning how to make films cheaply to practise for the bigger plan.
"I wanted to learn every aspect of filmmaking. In a way, I was also biding my time for this bigger plan. I have also been writing for 15 years, so I have enough fresh scripts and treatments to last until I die. David's latest film SCREEN (Trailer below) See it NOW on the £1 perk
Grant Timmins (Support Camera-Post-Production) (UK)
Grant worked on David's second feature film. MISSION X. He acted and shot the camera on the film. He also helped on the post production of MISSION X. He will work on the UK stories for CITY OF SIN.
Donna Langdon (Co-Producer) (UK)
Donna will be a Co-Producer on all the CITY OF SIN films on this first slate. David's partner of ten years. She also worked on SCREEN.
David shot most of MISSION X & SCREEN without a crew. "I'm basically a hybrid version of a filmmaker-youtuber-Documentary filmmaker style. The CITY OF SIN will have a very lean documentary sized crew in each City.
I have a huge list of new and some established talent from all over the world that are potentially right for this project. I will reveal them and the casting process through the project if funded.
I also have a crew secured for the USA shoot, if this campaign goes over to fund the USA films too.
Most of the films will be shot very fast in a few days. I have also written stories where I don't need sets built, and they don't have special effects. I will be using the great cities I shoot in as my backdrop to the stories. I have the early Robert Rodriguez attitude towards making films. Anybody can "spend" money, but my ethos and discipline is to solve most problems creatively and with resources.
However, there is still a minimum baseline of cash needed too. The whole goal is to get this branded destination of content up and running, As it grows, the projects can also get bigger, but at this level, it's about making 30-45 minute original sensational genre stories, with lots of spin off content. My daily updates on this campaign will explain how I can make this project for this cost.
If you want to be part of this great project, pick a perk on the right, and make your pledge. Or please share on social media to all your friends.
In the film business, EVERY project is risky. However, I have tried to create a project here that takes every aspect into consideration. My goal is to make and release a film every month. With three Features behind me, and the speed of the new technology, and post, I now know I can do that. My last feature was shot in seven days, and posted in 3 weeks. These City of Sin films are much shorter.
I will complete these 4 films if funded. I already have resources that total to over $100,000, and contacts to do this, but I need this minimum cash. Possibly risky challenges? After I have finished the 4 films and released, there is no gaurantee I will build a big enough following to continue making a film a month. Where the plan is to then do films in the US and Europe too. However, I do have several investors that love my project, love my previous films, so they just want to see how the first few films look, and they want to see if I can do 4 films in 4 months without any major problems before they fund.
If I do this, then I will also have the option of my community to potentially crowd fund again. I will also be charging $1 for each film to help grow. Yes, like most film projects, this is risky, but I am approaching it in a very sensible way. Also, unlike most features, I am not relying on distribution. I have my own direct to market distribution and marketing plan to start building my community. A conventional single feature film with little marketing and thought of a distribution plan is VERY RISKY.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
