Susanne Lund Pangrazio, Anna Orton, Nicole Bennett, and Kathryn Briggs finished an intense MFA in September 2013; now, how to bring their unique visions into the world? We decided to begin with something simple – take a familiar object and make it inspired. The result is a deck of playing cards, each artist re-addressing a suit; in addition the deck includes two Jokers all four ladies worked on together. 54 works of art you can play with.
Linocut, Collage, Graphite, and tea, each artist was given complete freedom to explore their suit and develop its uniqueness. We drew inspiration for our designs from history, mythology, fairy tale, pop culture, and personal experiences. The result is four individual approaches to what a suit of cards could be, woven together into a unified piece of interactive art a viewer can hold in their hand.
Now we are raising funds to get SANK! Printed – we’ve set our funding goal to cover the cost of 100 custom printed decks, each packed in its own custom designed box. Along with the playable decks, we are also offering fine art prints of our work and the original drawings and paintings.
These decks will be released through Kathryn’s publishing company Ess Publications and available via Amazon and Ess Publication website.
Check back for interviews with each artist on what went into her suit and more images of the artwork!
Risks and challenges
The art for each card is finished, polished, balanced, and ready to go; even the boxes are custom designed. We've sourced a great printer but, getting our project printed exactly how we want it has a steep minimum order requirement: 100 decks of cards. Even split between four, this is a big financial hurdle for new graduates on the "starving" end of the artist spectrum. With your kind support we will be able see our vision fully realized.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
