My children's book is a book that needs to be published, a book that fills a gaping hole in children’s literature, a book that will educate as well as entertain. The title of the book is “The Secret. Period.” The story evolved from the formative research I did as a precursor to my dissertation, while studying at The Pennsylvania State University. I was conducting focus groups with adult women about their menstrual cycles. I was shocked at how little women knew about their own cycles. Across interviews, one main theme that emerged was that women desired more information about their menstrual cycles, but they didn’t know how to go about finding it; menstruation was not viewed as a popular conversation topic. (Wanna read more about the research? Here you go: PERIOD RESEARCH!) A children’s book that is accessible to many ages would help break taboos and provide a springboard for discussion.
The premise for the story is a family that has two daughters. The daughters are good friends and spend most of their time together. When the older daughter gets her first period, she is embarrassed and ashamed, so she wants to keep it a secret from her younger sister. The younger sister then thinks that her older sister is mad at her and tries to win back her sister’s affection. When the younger sister finally discovers the secret, she thinks that her sister should be excited and decides to throw her a party to show her that menstruation can also be a thing to celebrate. The older sister realizes that she shouldn’t have kept secrets from her sister and promises to throw a “period party” for her upon the occasion of her first period.
To promote the themes in the book, I have also secured a website: www.thesecretperiod.com, where I plan to offer new period party recipes and ideas, let people post about their period experiences, and promote celebration of the menstrual cycle!
The cost of this Kickstarter project is for two things: 1) to pay the illustrator I've found (see his amazing work here: BEN!) and 2) to the pay the initial publishing set-up fees. This cost will not go toward me, toward printing or distribution of the book, nor toward promotion or dissemination. This Kickstarter funding simply gets the book to the printing presses!
