For this project, I set out to improve upon the simple bottle opener in a way that could be easily manufactured. After many sketches and iterations, I came up with this concept of an ergonomic bottle opener that allows you to open a bottle with only one hand.
How It Works
Materials and Methods
Cap Snap comes in three material options:
To make Cap Snap from this variety of materials, I will be producing them using a process called waterjet cutting. This involves mixing a very high pressure stream of water with an abrasive and cutting the desired shape from the source material.
As a mechanical engineer, I have used this process to make hundreds of different parts so I know that it produces a consistant, reliable cut that will be perfect for a small part like Cap Snap. For this project, I will be using the same waterjetting shop that I have used for a large number of those parts.
After waterjetting, your Cap Snap will undergo a finishing process tailored to the material that you have chosen. Aluminum will be bead blasted for a satin finish, stainless steel will be hand polished for a gloss finish, and titanium will be electropolished for a mirror-like finish.
This campaign is set to finish around mid-January and I plan to begin production in the third week of January. After a 3-4 week production period, I will begin shipping Cap Snap at the end of February with the intent of finishing in the very beginning of March.
I will be shipping worldwide using USPS and providing free shipping within the US.
Risks and challenges
The shops that will be used for manufacturing this product were chosen specifically because they have an impeccable track record and I have worked with them for many years. Production methods and finishes have been carefully chosen to ensure that they will be able to keep up with a wide range of quantities while maintaining consistent quality. While production schedules of manufacturers are the most common hurdle when trying to hit a specific ship date, these shops are planning to start production shortly after the campaign closes.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
