About this project
The hustle doesn't stop here, we need your support! Introducing:
How your sunglasses are produced? Where they come from? What materials are used? We’re here to answer those questions.
My name is Nathan Resnick, I’m a junior at the University of San Diego and the founder of Yes Man Watches. I've always wondered what it takes to turn an idea into an actual product so this summer I set out to China, where 78% of the world’s sunglasses are produced.
Before we jump in, you should know I speak Mandarin fluently because:
In 2010 I lived in Beijing with a host family for the whole year.
I attended a local Chinese High School.
This summer, here is what I found out about sunglass manufacturers:
I started in Shen Zhen, China—a southern part of the country that borders Hong Kong— where sunglass manufacturers are in abundance. For two weeks I visited around two manufacturers a day, but after awhile they all seemed the same. Each and everyone had similar machined processes that ruined my impression of big name brands. It was now obvious to me why companies never show images of their factories.
I felt lost trying to find an honest and reliable supplier. I searched online everywhere and talked to everyone I could. I was at the point of giving up on finding a sustainable supplier until meeting Zhang Cheng (张承), a nephew of a bamboo farmer in rural Shen Zhen.
The bamboo farm was about three hours outside of downtown Shen Zhen. I went there early the next morning to meet Zhang Cheng's uncle. What I found was incredible: natural, handpicked bamboo.
Zhang Cheng's uncle, Zhang Shi Hong (张世洪), was excited to meet me after talking with his nephew. I sat down with him to discuss the possibility of creating bamboo sunglasses. He said he could make the sunglass arms but not the frames because he couldn't shape bamboo that way.
Together we decided to craft handmade hybrid bamboo sunglasses, using the bamboo he grows. Each arm of our sunglasses are hand-carved and sanded to perfection.
The only automation we have in our whole process is this little machine we use to make our plastic sunglass frames.
Traveling to China and finding Mr. Zhang was quite the learning experience. Now that you know how we make our sunglasses we need your support to bring our sunnies to life!

This is a new way to bring you high-quality shades and we want you to be the first to experience it.
We Started By Saying Yes
We started Yes Man last summer after being inspired to do more with our lives while working monotonous 9-5 summer internships. The 9-5 job felt so constraining that we wanted a way to remind ourselves to consider our use of time. Time is invaluable and everyone has the same 24 hours in a day, yet so few acknowledge their allocation of time. Your 9-5 job is only one third of your day.
After our first launch on Kickstarter in January, we realized a lot of projects lack transparency between the supporter and creator. Whenever we backed a project, we never knew how those products were being made. We’re here to change that—we’re going to be honest and open to give you an inside look of how sunglasses are actually made.
Why Trust Us?
We were born on Kickstarter! Yes Man started as a watch company and is now expanding our line to sunglasses. We felt the best way to launch would be to stay to our roots on Kickstarter!
We Need Your Support:
In order to turn this dream of ours into a reality, we need your support. Not only does this mean pledging for one of our awesome sunglasses, but sharing the story with a friend. Remember, on Kickstarter if we don't reach our full funding goal, we get nothing. If you could do something as simple as tweeting about our project, or just sharing our Facebook page, it can really go a long way (Click for Facebook and Twitter). By supporting us today, you are pre-ordering a pair of Yes Man sunglasses, guaranteeing you one of the few in our first production run at this special Kickstarter price.
Risks and challenges
One of the challenges when dealing with any physical product like this is complications in manufacturing. Rest assured because we personally know our suppliers. Everything from where we source our bamboo to the lenses of our sunglasses, we've got it all dialed in.
We work directly with our suppliers from start to finish and even conduct all quality control in-house. Please remember that production won't begin until after this campaign ends.
We're also very hard-working. In our last campaign, we shipped out all orders within the first day!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
