Speedbag, Punching, Blocking, Slips, Dips and Elbows
The Lightspeed Bag was born out of frustration and boredom with the punching bags currently being offered on the market. There are just too many drawbacks to installing a punching bag in your home, and in many cases they are substantial enough to stop you from getting one altogether. You could go either the heavy bag route - where you would get a bag that is big, heavy, ugly and a hassle to install. On top of this you can only really install it in your basement or garage, where it will still rattle your whole house. Or you could go with a free-standing heavy or reflex bag. The heavy bag version has the same drawback as the mounted heavy bag, minus the installation. But in addition needs to be filled with sand, which is messy and heavy as it requires many bags of sand. The reflex free-standing bag is a cool concept but it misses the mark for providing a realistic training tool as they are too slow and one-dimensional. For all other punching bags there is no realistic application the home and are intended strickly for gym use.
Installation - Quick and Easy
The Lightspeed Bag was designed specifically for home use. My goal in creating the bag was to provide a more dynamic and interactive training experience then you would get with a traditional heavy bag. In addition to the training benefits, the bag needed to work within the limitations of a home - use in limited space, easily installed and removable.
Add or remove in seconds
When I started developing the Lightspeed bag in my basement, my main goal was to make a mounted punching bag that was compact and provided motion. Unlike most punching bags it allows you to work both offense and defense
Dimensions and Specs
With the funds raised from this Kickstarter campaign I plan on doing the following: Get bulk discounts on various services and components used (ex. Graphics on bag, mounts, etc) Find a contract sewing company that can provide higher quantities, while keeping quality control a top priority Upgrade my manufacturing facility
Risks and challenges
There are risks and challenges that I may face along the way once my project is funded and I begin the process of filling orders. Here is a list of potential risks and how I plan on addressing them.
1. Quality control of bag cover
I construct and assemble the bags myself but I must outsource the sewing of the Lightspeed Bag cover. The bag covers must be identical with only a small room for error, in terms of cutting and sewing.
I plan on overcoming this risk by producing bag covers in small batches. This gives me the time to verify the fit and quality, and also identify any issues without them being repeated on a large number of covers. Once I am comfortable with the quality I can increase batch sizes.
2. Manufacturing of mount is too expensive even with bulk order
I have 2 options if this happens. (A) I can use modify an existing part, as I am currently doing for the mount, which I can get at a reasonable rate. The downside to this is that it is time consuming. (B) Increase bulk order size to the point to where I can get a substantial discount.
3. Space for manufacturing and assembly
As I start buying components in bulk, my limited basement space will start to shrink. I have access to another storage location but I would have to be going back and forth between two locations which is not efficient. My solution is to rent a small space where I could store and assemble the bags. Where I live in Calgary I can get space without a long term commitment for a reasonable price.
