All of the products photographed can be found in our various pledges! A huge thanks to everyone who has pledged so far... we are 70% there!
In early 2012, Profugo started a Tailoring Training Program for 6 women in rural India. The program was designed to teach women about basic tailoring. However, what developed from this program went far beyond technical skills. The women learned about business training and empowerment. They became motivated, confident, and inspired to become leaders in their community, changing their lives in ways that we could never have predicted.
We want to take a chance with Kickstarter to help transition our tailoring training program into a cooperative that is fully owned by the women. The women will provide tailoring to the local area in addition to the merchandise that will be sold in our Profugo Store. Your support not only gives these women the opportunity to provide for their families, but empowers them to become entrepreneurs. And as a testament to the people in Wayanad, India, they decided that all profits from their cooperative will go back into projects that support their community. These women don’t want a free hand out, they just want the opportunity to become entrepreneurs, expand their products, and make a difference in their communities…all they need is a little help from you to get started.
Profugo is a grassroots organization involved in International Development. The organization was founded in 2008 by a group of friends from Philadelphia who wanted to utilize their skills and resources to address challenges facing developing communities. Here at Profugo, we try to create a Global Neighborhood by lending a hand to disadvantaged communities around the world, instead of just a dollar.
All of our bags are Kalamkari block print. We specifically use the Machilipatnam style of printing, an ancient art form that originated in the 1500s. Every bag is 100% cotton and crafted with sustainable materials and natural vegetable dyes.
Where is the Money Going?
Your pledge will help launch a tailoring cooperative that will enable these women to produce some really cool products. Specifically, your pledge will help…
1. To launch a cooperative fully owned by the women entrepreneurs.
2. Double the amount of women trained and employed through the cooperative.
3. Expand their product line to include, but not limited to, scarves, padded wallets, and overnight bags.
4. Renovate the new space to improve the working conditions.
5. Purchase materials and upgrade the sewing equipment.
Before You Go...
This project is really about empowering women half way across the world. You have the ability to change lives through something as simple as buying a bag. Please support these women who are trying to make a difference for themselves, their families, and their communities. A global neighborhood for a better quality of life!
Risks and challenges
Because all of our fabrics are unique and chosen on a seasonal basis, the pattern that you order now might not be available in six months. Although unlikely, should this happen, we will replace with an equally beautiful pattern.
While we don't expect any delays, we only have a handful of women producing the bags and monsoon season is quickly approaching. We will do our absolute best to get you your product by the delivery date.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
