Femme is a short film about Carson, a gay twenty-something looking for love on all the wrong apps. After being rejected by an online hookup for being too “femme”, Carson embarks on a hilarious journey towards self-discovery and acceptance by way of a manic existential crisis and a drag queen fairy godmother. Set in Hell’s Kitchen, the epicenter of New York City gay life, Carson must confront his own notions of masculinitygender performance, and discrimination within the LGBTQ community.

By Corey Camperchioli, Creator of Femme

I wrote Femme because I grew up thinking it was bad for a boy to be feminine. How could I not? Boys teased me relentlessly for not acting like them, pointing out my high-pitched voice and my distinct strut as evidence against me. One time at a gas station, an attendant asked me if I was a boy or a girl. I wasn’t like all the other boys, that’s for sure. But I also didn’t identify as a girl. I was this strange in-between. I was femme.

As I grew up, owning my “femme”-ness felt more authentic than any performance of masculinity I tried to put on, but I also felt that being my “femme” self was not attractive. It’s kinda reinforced—well, everywhere. Hop on Grindr and you’ll see “no femmes” and “masc only” more times than you can count. I had never seen someone celebrated for being femme before. So I took the word “femme” and decided that I would write a movie about it. Femme: The Film was born.

As the project developed, it rapidly became more and more timely. A president who ran a campaign on fear, oppression, and hate was elected. Anyone labeled “different” or “other” now lives in a constant state of uneasiness. As I write this, I wonder whether my rights as a gay man will be stripped away before my very eyes. I’m not sure, and that fear has rattled me to my core. But I can’t let that fear paralyze me. I know that now more than ever, I must raise my voice and tell my story: A story about someone marked “different” who learns to love himself as is. It’s something that I’m still learning how to do, and I hope my journey toward self-love will set others on the track to loving themselves, too. Especially those femme boys out there—those who get told to “deepen their voice”, “tone it down”, or “butch it up.” I want to tell you what I wish someone had told me a long time ago: you are perfect exactly as you are. So live loud, femme boys. This one’s for you.

We need your help to get this movie made—we can’t do it without you! Money raised will go to the following:

Our budget is very tight, but we’re confident that this talented team will produce a finished project that feels like it has three times the budget.
