Rodney over at Watch It Played threw together one of his awesome video previews of some of our stuff here. In the interest of full disclosure, we are a sponsor of the show.
Have a look at the Bad Publicity review (for Netrunner fans). They are giving away some of our click tokens. This is a great way to grab some click tokens before anyone else!
Tom Vasel mentioned us during his weekly news show. We were bummed he didn't do a full component drop... maybe next time! (starts at 3:12).
I'm a passionate collector and player of modern boardgames and one of the things that drives me nuts is spending money on a game and then just tossing the components into the box in baggies after punching out all the bits. A few publishers get it and have produced amazing inserts, but by and large publishers spend their development time and dollars on the game art and bits and that's as it should be...
In late 2012, several of Fantasy Flight Games' LCGs captured the imagination of my family (Netrunner: The Card Game, Star Wars: The Card Game, and Lord of the Rings: The Card Game) and we quickly discovered the limitations of the standard game box. Before even adding any expansions, things were hopeless! The box stored the cards, but prepping a new deck or just preparing for a game was a time consuming jumble of rubber bands and deck boxes.
Evolution of an Idea
In need of a better way to organize and store our card games, I set out on an amazing adventure involving lasers, 3D design, and a lot of glue! While I had done some custom insert work previously to streamline game bit storage, I found working with cardboard and foam board rather limiting. My introduction to laser cutting in early 2013 opened up a whole new world where I could accomplish my pursuit of game storage perfection.
Passion or Obsession?
The intersection where passion becomes obsession is a dark street indeed. All I needed was a great storage solution for those LCGs... and Mage Wars. Man, Mage Wars has so many cards! But then I figured I needed a more general solution for things like Dominion and Yomi, and the ASB inserts were born. Of course, I can't forget Agricola. Man, I love Agricola, but the box was too small for an insert. I needed an external solution.
Then one day I looked up while working on my fourth or fifth token set to find my wife looking at me quizzically. She smiled and said, "You know, you've put a lot of effort into all of this. You should share it. I'm sure a couple of people would be interested in some of the stuff you've produced..."
Each of these designs has been field-tested (by my family and friends) and rigorously refined to perfection. Each insert, storage solution, and token represents a unique design challenge. Maximizing utility while being confined to a specific amount of space is a problem that I personally enjoy.
One of the challenges I faced early on was how to design bit boxes that feature closing tops without using hinges and latches. The problem was the hinges and latches were making the bit boxes too bulky to store in the the lanes of my inserts. I think you will find the rail-based, friction-close tops I have designed to be minimal, elegant, and functional.
Let's be honest here - the games are the thing, right? Cost is important because ultimately it's about the challenge and experience of playing the games.
We have worked aggressively over the past few months to refine the materials and production process to deliver these products at the lowest possible price to you.
We use only quality HDF, Baltic Birch plywood, and acrylics. Of equal importance, six months of intensive research and testing has been invested in our production processes.
Keep It Simple
All of the inserts and chest kits require some glue and 10 - 60 minutes of construction time, unless you are purchasing one of the built chests. One of the overriding design requirements we employ is to keep everything as simple as possible. The internal box inserts are dead simple to build, but we will be providing construction videos to give you a leg up. We will also provide external chest construction videos.
While staining/finishing your chest is optional, we will be releasing stain and finish how-to videos once we start shipping products to explain this simple process, as well.
1) With your help we can buy our materials in bulk and this will allow us to offer all of these solutions for significantly less. 2) Your pledge will also allow us to buy some custom production equipment so we can create beautiful double-sided tokens in less time and with better accuracy and finish. 3) It's one thing to produce a few tokens for personal use. It's another matter entirely to produce hundreds or even thousands of tokens and inserts. Your support will ensure we understand the demand for these products and allow us to design and scale production accordingly.
Once the campaign is over and funded, production will begin in mid-January and will continue through early March. Shipping will then commence. Depending on pledge volumes, pledges could ship earlier, but we don't anticipate pledges shipping out of our workshop later than March.
A Word About Shipping
Worldwide shipping is expensive and tough! In the U.S. and Canada, there are several options available at reasonable rates and all of our items are available for U.S. and Canadian shipping. Worldwide shipping is much more challenging given that many of our inserts and chests have a very large footprint. For this Kickstarter, only green titled items below and pledge levels that specifically note worldwide shipping are available outside of the U.S. and Canada. We will be working on cost-effective, worldwide shipping for all items during 2014. Thanks for understanding!
While the international shipping charge is steep, the good news is that you can toss green titled add-ons into your pledge to help reduce the cost per item shipped. Perhaps you can get together with a friend or two and combine forces to get the shipping charge into reasonable territory?
Finally, if your pledge level title doesn't begin with [+] (U.S./Canada only), you will need to add $7 (U.S.) or $20 (Canada/updated Dec 3) shipping to your pledge if you decide to pledge for add-ons below. All pledges beginning with [+] have proper shipping built-in to allow any number of add-ons below. Pledge levels lacking this symbol must add the shipping amounts above to account for more expensive USPS or UPS shipping for larger/heavier items. The most effective way to pledge is to pledge at the highest pledge level for the item you want, and then simply add the cost of any add-ons you are interested in.
There are a lot of them... more than forty if you count extra dividers. The pledge levels to the right offer a quick and convenient way to grab a solution for your favorite game. If you find you need another token set or a couple of extra inserts for your three Lord of the Rings: The Card Game core boxes, just add the amount indicated from the add-ons menu below to your pledge and get back to gaming!
We have divided the add-on items into six categories: storage chests, internal game inserts, tokens, extras, bit boxes, and dividers. You can read a brief description of each product below, and simply clicking any of the lists below will whisk you over to our website where you can find more detailed information and tons more images.
Finally, all of our storage chests include free engraving from among our supported logo options.
The EXT and Agricola external storage solutions feature all wood construction using 6mm Baltic Birch for the external shell, slide tops with a "U" closure, handy corner feet to provide for easy lifting and movement of the chests, as well as a top tray for rules and playmats with lift holes for easy removal of the tray. The Agricola features (2) Bit Boxes custom designed to hold your tiles (base and expansion), as well as tokens. The Agricola also features two removable bit trays to store your resources.
The EXT-003 "Tall Boy" has an ASB-004 insert under the top tray that is removable and provides four lanes of card storage and a huge center bit lane that can hold two Bit Boxes!
Below you can see the removable tray in each of the EXT and Agricola chests. You will find (4) 6mm card lanes allowing side-by-side dividers, as well as (2) bit lanes that can each hold one Bit Box and other small items.
Finally, the EXT-001 and Agricola chests ship with (15) dividers and the EXT-003 ships with (30) dividers.
Top trays, Agricola Bit Boxes, and Agricola resource trays are constructed from 3mm Baltic Birch. The ASB-004 insert that ships with the EXT-003 is constructed using a 3mm Baltic Birch shell with (2) 6mm Baltic Birch lane walls to allow for side-by-side dividers.
Construction time for these kits will vary, but plan on 90 minutes. Staining and finishing will add a couple of hours across several days.
Internal Box Inserts
Game box inserts are where it all started for us. Each of these inserts is cut from 3mm HDF (with the exception of the ASB-004 which uses Baltic Birch ply) and is designed to be glued together and then dropped into an existing game box or case. Construction time will take 15 - 25 minutes, depending on your skill level and the kit.
These inserts feature an equal number of shared divider slots on each wall allowing you to maximize space usage. Designing inserts for game boxes is an exercise in trade-offs. Some boxes require horizontal dividers to maximize storage capability, while other boxes invite the use of vertical dividers. Some designs are so space constrained that your sleeving choices will be restricted (hint: Ultra Pro Standard and Mayday Standard will always work with any of our inserts), while other designs allow even the largest sleeves (I'm looking at you, Dragon Shields). Click the image below to see tons more details on our website.
What's better than nice, thick cardboard tokens? In my opinion, it doesn't get any better than 3mm engraved acrylic. Acrylic tokens are virtually indestructible (just don't let Vasel throw yours off his roof) and they're spill-proof to boot. Many of our tokens are double-sided to help reduce token clutter during your games. During the post-campaign survey, you will have a choice of single or double-sided tokens. If you choose single-sided, your token counts will rise to the amount of tokens provided with the game. The price is the same.
They are all design to replace the tokens in your games and thoughtful choices were employed when choosing their shapes and colors. Unless we note that a product is a licensed accessory, all art used on our tokens is not the original art provided with the game.
Our double-sided damage tokens are available in custom counts for specific games (and included in many token packages above). They are also available in a master set that can be used in a multitude of other games below.
Our favorite extras add-on is the 6mm acrylic fantasy meeples for Lords of Waterdeep. Each custom designed meeple is color-coded to match the cubes they replace and they really help with immersion.
From a purely functional perspective, the Eclipse Population Trays simply can't be beat. No more scattered population cubes for you!
And finally, in our ongoing quest to banish colored cubes from game boxes everywhere, the Pandemic germeeples are a wonderful step forward. Each germeeple features a custom design and they are color-coded to match the cubes.
Our line of Bit Boxes come in a variety of configurations to meet almost any storage need. There are two sizes and each features a friction-based, sliding top closure that eliminates the need and expense for hinges and clasps.
There are even engraved models for our licensed accessories. Best of all, they are inexpensive and quick to build!
If you feel you may need some extra dividers, look no further. Dividers are sold in packages of (15) and are cut from 2.286mm clear acrylic. Unlike wood dividers, these look magnificent when installed. While HDF (wood) dividers would save a dollar, we feel acrylic is the way to go!
LGC Bundle Choices
The [+] LGC Bundle pledge level provides you with your choice of token packages. You can choose (1) token package from Group A, or (1) token package from Group B + (1) token package from Group C, or (3) token packages from Group C. Your choice will be captured in the post-campaign survey.
We have several engraving options available by virtue of our licensing agreements with several leading game publishers. Logo engraving is free as part of this Kickstarter.
Plaid Hat Games - Summoner Wars is a favorite in our house and we are proud to have a formal licensing relationship with Plaid Hat Games. Our Summoner Wars products are "Officially Licensed Summoner Wars Accessories" and our Summoner Wars engraving option uses source art from the game.
Below is a sample of the custom Summoner Wars logo we have put together for Summoner Wars. As you can see, we have included each faction's logo!
You may choose to have this logo engraved on any of the EXT chests (EXT-001, EXT-003), as well as "THE CASE" PACKAGE. You may also purchase a Summoner Wars Bit Box that includes logo engraving on the top of the box.
Rio Grande Games - Rio Grande hit a home run with the original deck building game Dominion, and it gets plenty of play around here. Our Dominion products are "Officially Licensed Dominion Accessories" and our Dominion engraving option uses source art from the game.
You may choose to have this logo engraved on any of the EXT chests (EXT-001, EXT-003), as well as "THE CASE" PACKAGE. You may also purchase a Dominion Bit Box that includes logo engraving on the top of the box.
Dominion is copyrighted by Rio Grande Games and designed by Donald X. Vaccarino.
DoubleSix Dice - Matt of DoubleSix Dice has designed an amazing d6*2 (d12) die that belongs in everyone's dice bit box. The whole idea of rolling cubes is just insane if you really think about... cubes simply aren't suited to rolling! Luckily, we convinced Matt to let us offer engraved bit boxes so you have somewhere to store all those new and innovative d6s:
The DoubleSix Dice engraving is available for any of our Bit Boxes.
Minion Games - Minion has published two recent favorites of ours - Hegemonic and The Manhattan Project, but they didn't stop there! They recently ran two super successful Kickstarters for Futuristic Metal Coins and Metal Dragon Coins. We're a Future Coins backer and we want to let you in a little secret... the Futuristic Metal Coins are amazing. We "convinced" James to send us all of the manufacturing samples for photos with our bit boxes and they blew us away. These things weigh a ton, feel awesome, and are worth every penny! The best news is that we are offering engraved Bit Boxes for Futuristic Metal Coins:
and Metal Dragon Coins:
The Futuristic Metal Coins and Metal Dragon Coins engravings are available with any of our bit boxes free during the Kickstarter.
Level 99 Games - Level 99 Games has some incredible titles out there in the wild: BattleCON: War of the Indines, BattleCON: Devastation of the Indines, Pixel Tactics I & II, The Minigame Library (which included Pixel Tactics originally), and more. Even more exciting, their current Kickstarter for Argent: The Consortium has sped past the funding goal and Brad just keeps heaping on the goodness in the form of stretch goals!
Our backers suggested the BattleCON games were ripe for some storage solutions and Level 99 agreed to extend a license. We are still working to produce the master engravings, but here is some sample art to whet your appetite:
Conquistador Games - Conquistador Games produces many well known games including The New Science, Road to Enlightenment, and their latest game, Tomorrow. Check them out today. Where there are awesome gaming coins, there needs to be a bit box to store them in, so we approached the crew at Conquistador Games and struck a deal to deliver engraved bit boxes to store their Best Damn Metal Gaming Coins Ever! in.
These logo samples may change somewhat as we optimize our engraving production process, but they are generally representative of the scope and nature of the engraving quality and image that will be used.
Copyrights, Trademarks, and Other Legalese
All of our tokens use unique, third-party symbology and art unless licensed. All of our solutions are not licensed and are not endorsed by any company unless otherwise specified.
It's Your Turn!
Risks and challenges
We have spent the last few months refining the production processes required to produce our products. The primary risk we face is supplier delivery of materials and workshop build-out to support this Kickstarter and volume orders. We have accounted for these items in our project timeline and don't anticipate any issues, but ultimately, we are at the mercy of our suppliers.
Most of the items we are offering as pledge rewards are design complete. There are a few last minute engraved logos that we are still working on and we will be doing final design tweaking (token art centering, etc) during and shortly following the campaign, but once funded, that work should be complete.
The primary identified challenge of this project is backer support volume. As the number of backers grows, the project will increase in scope and complexity. Production, packaging, and shipping have been assessed against the project timeline and we have plans in place to expand production, packaging, and shipping as the backer volume rises, but the need to acquire additional production capacity (equipment or labor) could potentially impact the timeline.
Meeting backer expectations is very important to us. While some Kickstarter projects deliver late, we have carefully crafted our project plan and timeline with the expectation of bumping into problems. We believe we have included a reasonable amount of time to allow for those inevitable surprises and still deliver in March.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
