What is Bandits and Bounties?

Bandits and Bounties is a top-down Action-RPG inspired by classic Spaghetti Westerns such as The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, Once Upon a Time in the West, Death Rides a Horse, Sartana, and so on...

You play as a wandering bounty hunter. Through a series of self-contained scenarios, you will enter into a troubled region of the west filled with warring factions and dangerous outlaws. Do you choose to offer your services to the highest bidder, to those most in need, or do you serve only yourself?

The gameplay is inspired by by tabletop role playing games and classic computer RPGs as well as arcade-style action games.  There will be an in-depth character creation system, scenarios that can play out differently depending on how you interact with them, fast paced combat, and high-tension dialogue.

The game is currently planned for PC, Mac and Linux.

Arcade Action Meets Traditional RPG

One of the biggest focuses of the game is to combine the accessibility and feel of an arcadey action game with the freedom and depth of a classic cRPG.  You can go in guns a'blazing, carefully aim your shots for critical hits, disarm your opponents and go in for melee, sneak your way through situations, or even talk your way out of fights.

Character Creation

Customize your character's appearance, stats and abilities.  The character creation system is inspired by those of pen-and-paper RPGs.  In addition to numerical stats such as strength, accuracy and charisma, you can also give your character various attributes, both positive and negative. Want to play as an expert gunslinger who's on the run from the law?  Want to play as a skilled brawler who never uses guns? Want to play as a suave gentleman with a penchant for bizarre gadgets? The choice is yours.

Dynamic Dialogue System

One of the most important things for me in designing this game is to make sure that dialogue can flow directly into combat, and combat can flow directly into dialogue. Rather than relying purely on branching dialogue trees, the dialogue system in this game more closely resembles the diplomacy system from a strategy game. You can negotiate, threaten, and ally with characters in the game.  Much of the dialogue also happens in real-time, so if the conversation starts going sour, drawing your gun or throwing a punch is an option, and you'll also be able to move freely during dialogue.  And if you have an opponent dead-to-rights, you can make demands of them through dialogue in exchange for their lives.

You can use the dialogue system to get information at the local saloon, to avoid a fight, to start a fight, to escape a standoff, to get a job, or to make demands at gunpoint.

World Simulation

The world of Bandits and Bounties is not static.  Many of the characters have their own agendas which will play out over the course of the scenario.  Outlaws will rob, Sheriffs will hunt outlaws, and those who have been wronged will seek revenge.  Each scenario will play out differently depending on how you interact with the various characters and factions.  Pick sides in conflicts between characters, or play those sides against each other for your own personal gain.

Information is King

Sometimes knowledge can be as valuable as gold.  Especially when that knowledge is the location of gold.  Part of the world simulation is who knows what.  Information can tell you the location of treasure or the perpetrator of a crime.  Spreading false information could send an enemy on a wild goose chase, or spark a conflict between factions.

Music

The music of the game will be a mix of instrumental music and songs with lyrics.  For the instrumental music, I want to evoke the feeling of the classic Spaghetti Western soundtracks of Ennio Morricone and Bruno Nicolai without directly aping them.  I want the game to have it's own distinctive sound.

The lyrical music will play in saloons where in-game musicians will perform.  Some characters in the game will also have their own theme songs which will play if you wind up in a fight with them.

Why Kickstarter?

The money raised by the Kickstarter will primarily go to supporting us as we continue to work on the game so that we are able to give the project our full attention.

We don't want to put the cart before the horse, so we will not be detailing stretch goals until we've reached our funding goal.  However, I will say that we'd like to see this game come to consoles, and that would be one of our primary goals should we receive enough extra funding.

Flight of the Datathief:  A low-poly railshoter where you pilot a ship which has just stolen data from an interplanetary corporation.  Now you must escape across an alien world to reach your mothership with the data.  The game normally costs $1.

Venusian Vengeance:  A top-down Run 'n' Gun action game.  In an alternate history where the soviets won the space race and colonized Venus, you play as an American sent to Venus to discover the secret weapon they are creating in their Venusian Science Facility.  You get the downloadable version, which normally costs $3.99.  Note that the game is also available as a series of free in-browser episodes here: http://renegadesector.com/games/

Kings of the Desert:    In a post-apocalyptic wasteland, 4 kings wield 4 guns and rule over the desert.  From the desert comes a nameless wanderer with a 5th gun to challenge the kings.  Features procedural generated guns and experimental storytelling.  Originally only available as a backer reward for the IndieStatik kickstarter.

Risks and challenges

As with any game project, especially of this scale, there are always unexpected hurdles that come along during development. At this point, I have been designing this game for over a year now, so I have a pretty good idea of the path development will take, but game design is by nature an iterative process. Elements of the game will have to be constantly tested, tweaked, reworked and retested before the game is complete. I can say that I know what it takes to finish a project, and am determined to see it through to the end.
