ABOUT THIS PROJECT

In Zone is an inspirational look at possibility through education. Throughout its powerful narrative this documentary will raise poignant questions about race, privilege, diversity, and cycles of inequality across the Western world. At a time when we’ve never seemed more divided, this is a story about a man who, despite all the obstacles, is trying to bring people together. And it’s working.

Terrance Wallace has already enabled over a hundred teens in New Zealand to create educational and personal success. We’ve followed his journey for the past two years, and will continue over the coming year as he sets up his pioneering ‘In Zone’ programme in the USA.

As well as following Terrance and our teens’ incredible journey to create a compelling and engaging documentary, our intention is to raise our audience’s awareness of the cycles of inequality which are inherent in our societies. We want to inspire those who can help to do so, both on a broader political and social level, and also on a more personal level. No-one is too small to make a difference.

We’d love you to help us tell the story of this movement, giving kids a chance at their brightest futures with the support to achieve their dreams.

If you can’t pledge right now, remember to hit the * reminder on the top right of the page.

THE STORY

Chicago-born Terrance Wallace travelled to New Zealand several years ago on a holiday. At first blown away by the breathtaking scenery, he was alarmed to see a news item about Māori and Pasifika youth falling through the cracks. It struck a chord for Terrance. Back home in the USA, he’d seen the same statistics over and over again about African-American & Hispanic kids. Once, he had been one of them. After narrowly escaping being gunned down in a gang hijacking, Terrance was given a second chance at life. He became determined to make a difference, and here in front of him was a new challenge. He packed up his house in Chicago and moved to New Zealand.

Setting his sights on Auckland’s sought-after “grammar school zone”, he found a home in the heart of the city’s wealthiest – and whitest – exclusive schooling area. He invited Māori and Pasifika boys with a desire to succeed to apply for a chance to move into the in-zone home and attend Auckland Grammar School. Now they would have access not only to highly resourced schooling, but – critically - Grammar’s extremely influential alumni network, which lies at the centre of the nation’s business and political inner circles. This, he decided, is how you break cycles.

As the boys overcame obstacles, dealt with setbacks, and ultimately made breakthrough successes, Terrance faced the pull of home, back to Chicago where many in the city – amid rising racial tensions and violence – are asking him to start the scheme in America. Back in the USA, he is now utilising all of his knowledge from New Zealand, and facing new and different challenges in order to set up In Zone Illinois, pulling together a new group of teens and youth workers to be pioneers on the other side of the world from where it all began.

OUR TEAM

ROBYN PATERSON - DIRECTOR

Robyn's debut feature documentary, Finding Mercy, about her search for a missing friend in her homeland of Zimbabwe, premiered at IDFA in 2012. It was awarded Best Cinematography and Best Emerging Filmmaker at New Zealand’s DocEdge Film Festival the following year, and was a finalist for Best Documentary and Best Documentary Director at the New Zealand Film Awards. The film led to Robyn's appearance as a speaker at TEDx Auckland. Robyn has a significant background in the film and television industry which includes working variously as a director, producer, writer, casting director and occasionally as a presenter. Around film projects she is currently a director for popular and visually notable architectural series, Grand Designs - New Zealand.

JILL MACNAB - PRODUCER

Jill manages Vendetta Films, an Australia/New Zealand independent film distribution company, and Vendetta Productions, which produced New Zealand’s biggest local box office hit of 2015, Born To Dance, and is executive producing this year’s soon-to-be cult documentary hit, Pecking Order. She was the first non-European-based participant of the prestigious Inside Pictures programme.

CHRISTINA MILLIGAN – PRODUCER

Christina (Ngati Porou) is an experienced producer and screenwriter of feature drama and documentaries. Her recent credits include executive producing the feature Mt Zion, which topped the New Zealand box office in 2013, and the documentary The Price of Peace, which won the Best Documentary award at the ImagiNative Media and Arts Festival in Toronto.

SEAN LOFTIN – DOP & CAMERA

Sean is a talented lighting cameraman who has a wide range of experience encompassing drama, documentary, factual series and commercial. Spending the past several years as the primary camera operator for Attitude Pictures, Sean has honed his skills in documentary filmmaking in more than twenty countries, working with a wide range of cameras and equipment. It was during this time that Sean developed a strong working relationship with filmmaker Robyn Paterson; his storytelling instincts and cinematic eye leading to him becoming her cinematographer of choice for In Zone.

TIM WOODHOUSE - EDITOR

Tim has cut some of New Zealand’s most celebrated documentaries, including Leanne Pooley’s top grossing hit Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls, as well as Beyond The Edge (about Ed Hillary’s Everest climb), and Oscar long-listed animation 25 April. He recently completed work on the upcoming McLaren, directed by Roger Donaldson. Tim first collaborated with filmmaker Robyn Paterson on Finding Mercy.

WHY KICKSTARTER?

You never quite know what’s going to happen while shooting a documentary, and while we’ve filmed extensively over the past two years, this story has become bigger than we had envisaged. The In Zone programme is now headed to Chicago at what’s become a pivotal time in history, and we need additional resource to be able to follow this new, highly significant part of the journey in order to complete our film.

In addition, we want to build a group of fans and followers around the world who are keen to support this game-changing initiative, and help bring it to others. Your support will also signal to other potential investors and partners that this is a viable project which people want to see. This will enable us to access further funding opportunities to increase our budget and deliver an outstanding film.

HOW WILL WE SPEND THE MONEY?

The In Zone Illinois journey is just beginning, and we need to ensure we capture that footage from the outset - so paying for gear hire, flights, accommodation, on-the-ground expenses and all that production stuff is our most pressing task. We also have many hours of footage, which has already been shot both in Auckland and from early visits to Chicago. We’d love our editor to be able to start working through this and begin shaping the film. Of course along the way we are making sure the footage is safe & sound, which means hard drives, hard drives & more hard drives! As well as avid conversions and other costs.

In addition we plan to create a full impact campaign around the release of the film, with a strategy to engage the audiences who need to see it the most. We also want to create a full study guide so that this film can be studied in schools as a reference for a discussion of equality, privilege and diversity.

Risks and challenges

Documentary filmmaking isn’t an exact science, which can make it more rewarding, but it can also be very challenging. Our team has lots of combined experience producing features and docs, so we’re confident we can achieve our target of having our film completed and premiering at a festival in early-mid 2018. We’ve already shot a solid base of strong material and are very clear on what we need to complete our story, so we’re comfortable with our timeline - but we’re also aware that flexibility is vital to good storytelling, and that could mean shifting our plan a little.

We’ve kept our rewards realistic and clear because it’s important to us that we deliver to you. Much of what we have to give is the sort of thing that money can’t usually buy – like time, and experiences. We will give it wholeheartedly.
