(Note: **If anyone is interested in both an album reward, and in donating towards workshops in schools,** please increase the pledge amount in the album/things one, and the extra will go towards work with kids :) Because it turns out patrons can only select one reward tier/thing. Also, Thank you!!!! )
Wonderful people, hello,
I am launching this crowdfunding campaign today, to raise money for two purposes:
1. Making and releasing an album
2. Helping kids access art by bringing workshops and concerts to schools. Because art is for everyone.
I am writing these words from a hotel in Churchill Manitoba, up north on Hudson Bay. I am here for two weeks, doing songwriting workshops with the K-11 students at the school, and it is amazing.
A lot of things feel amazing to me lately. I have been a full time artist for over a year now, and wow, a lot of dream-level stuff has happened. I played with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in the Centennial Concert Hall (twice!), I toured across Canada, I stood on the red earth of Canada’s east coast, I sang on the stages of music festivals I dreamed of playing, I played a concert in a cave, 10 stories below the earth. I am smiling wide, and my heart is full.
This winter, something else amazed me: Along with a fantastic team of musicians, folk music producer, and sound engineer, I began work on my second album, Night Sky, to be released March 2018. I am humbled. I am honoured to do this work in the world.
Here, in northern Manitoba, the amazement continues; yesterday the Churchill Elementary kids put on a concert of their newly penned songs. Watching them, I could tell they felt proud, they felt strong, they felt excited. And I thought “Wow, art is powerful. Art is for everyone.” The more I do this work, the more concerts I play and people I meet and children I work with, the more I see this is true: We all have something to share, and we all have the capacity to create. In the past year I have been working to increase the accessibility of art by bringing workshops and performances to kids in schools. Because art is for everyone.
Thank you for your kind support <3
How this Works :
Crowdfunding is a way for interested people to support the work of artists. The idea is that a large group of people pledge their support (ranging from $10 - $1000), and then that money is pooled together, to get large scale, high-expense projects off the ground. In this campaign, you can pledge to support the costs of making an album, or pledge to support workshops and concerts in schools.
Pledges come with rewards, and all pledges come with a download of the album. AND all pledgers will receive a digital download of the new single, Lift Me Up, in early December.
**Patrons can only select one reward tier/thing. So, if anyone is interested in both an album reward, and in donating towards workshops in schools, please increase the pledge amount in the album/things one, and the extra will go towards work with kids :) ** Also, Thank you!!!!
Rewards will be mailed out in early December. If you celebrate Christmas and are looking for gifts, they should arrive in time (within Canada).
CDs and downloads of the album will be sent out after the album release, so in early April.
Look! Cool pledge rewards!
- The Album on CD
The album CD design is beautiful, with original art by Winnipeg artist Sarah Thiessen. I love it so much. And it has a 24 page lyric booklet with notes, photos, and more art.

Making and releasing an album:
Making an album is the best and coolest. The new album, Night Sky is a full-length album of 10 songs. This album tips between the earthly and the otherworldly; it is rooted in my lived experience, and at the same time it reaches into the space just beyond, thinning the veil between here and there. I was SO LUCKY to work with a stellar team on this project, including engineer/producer Lloyd Peterson, and my trio mates Natanielle Felicitas (cello), and Quintin Bart (double bass).
Truth: Making an album is expensive. Album expenses include:
- Production: A producer serves as a mindful second opinion on creative choices, 3600$
- Recording: Studio time + sound engineer, 5000$
- Players: Amazing musicians who laid down tracks and time on this project 2000$
- Photos 500$
- Album art and design 1500$
- Album manufacture: 3000$
- Publicity: publicists are super helpful and necessary to help spread the word in the media, about the album release and tour shows 6000$
- Time: Just so much time. Like months of full time work, and then other months of part time work.
Art is For Everyone; Bringing Workshops and Concerts to Schools
Art is for everyone. We all have something to say, and we all have the capacity to be creative. For the past year, I have been offering workshops and performing concerts in schools across Canada, K-12. The workshops teach a creative process that helps students listen to their internal world, and express and articulate it, and they are designed to be empowering, supportive, and encouraging. These workshops teach a creative process that can be used again and again.
Performing concerts in schools can be so powerful. I get to demonstrate vulnerability and authenticity, and these performances show kids that they can grow up to be artists, that this is a valuable role and a job out in the real world.

All support offered towards school concerts and workshops will be put towards:
- Week long residency in a school, doing workshops with up to 5 classes: 1400$
- Day long workshop, working with up to 2 classes: 500$
- Half day workshop, 1 class: 300$
- School concert, solo: 400$
- School concert, trio: 800$
Other Ways to Help:
If you feel excited to support this campaign, but financial supporting or preordering doesn’t work for you, would you please consider sharing this campaign on social media? That is a huge help ☺
Thank you <3
Risks and challenges
For me, the biggest challenges in pursuing this album and this work are: Time, energy, and trust.
It can be hard to balance time in all areas of my life. I am lucky though, that I have an amazing manager and admin hero, Teresa Nelson, working at my side. Thanks Teresa! I also make a lot of lists.
Energy can be tricky. Sometimes things-to-do arrive all at once. I am ever increasingly accepting my human-ness, enhancing my calm, and respecting the limitations of what I can get done in a day. I am taking better care of myself <3. And things are still getting done. I’m just more chill about it. This is great news.
Trust. To do this work, to live with an ebb and flow of income, this takes trust. I just close my eyes and do it. Jump, and the net shall appear.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
