A delightful journey through the relationship between a woman and her father's widow, as she struggles to leave despite their bond.

This video is my last student project, and soon I will be updating it!

The film: Lillian's Parade

Lillian Willow has done it again. Reaching the age of fifty has not slowed her down when it comes to embracing or creating the magical moments in life. Whether it's a parade, dancing in the rain, or a backyard pageant, Lily is ready for all that life has to offer and more. Unfortunately, someone has to pick up the pieces left behind. For Lily, that person is Katherine Willow, her stepdaughter. These two women have forged a bond that defies the normal conventions, but it greatly wears on Katherine.

When Lily sets fire to the backyard, Katherine must put it out and get coffee for the firemen who come out. When Lily decides to dance naked in the backyard, Katherine is there to bring her inside before the neighbors call the cops. She pays the bills, cleans the house, and keeps out the sleazy suitors that come calling for Lily.

Through it all, there's a love and mutual companionship that keeps Katherine from following her dream of becoming a writer. She applies to Northwestern University, more out of curiosity to see if she could get in. Unfortunately, her boyfriend Trevor has reached a breaking point in his tolerance of Lily. He wants nothing more than to take Katherine away to Boston. Katherine realizes that he doesn't have her best interests at heart, he just wants a wife to take care of his home and his children. Unwilling to trade one gilded cage for another, she puts off giving Trevor an answer. It could not come at a worse time for Trevor, as his anger has begun to boil over because of the entire situation, and so he becomes physical with Katherine. Right on time, Lily warns him off with her trusty shotgun aimed at his head while she "politely" asks him to leave.

With one problem behind her, Katherine refocuses her attention to taking care of Lily, slowly adapting her approach to life. Until she discovers that Lily hid her acceptance letters to Northwestern, causing her to miss the deadline. Lily explains that she simply wants life to stay the way it is now, but Katherine has grown tired of people trying to run her life for her, and so she takes control. She leaves to attend the university of her dreams, and life begins to feel as if it's her own. For once, she feels control and freedom all at once.

Back at home, Lily has fallen into a state of decline, no longer taking care of her health or hygiene. Lily realizes that Katherine was the last connection she had to her late husband, her love, her soul mate. And now the house is entirely too big and empty. It takes more effort than she's willing to give to take care of the house or herself. She continues to drink more and more every day. One day, she finally gives in to the illness consuming her, and she dies.

The news comes as a shock to Katherine, as Lily never even told her she was sick. She rushes home for the service. As she sits there, attempting normality in the face of her great loss, Katherine has a startling realization. For years she either fought Lily, or gave in to her wishes. She had never once embraced Lily for who she was. She decides that it's better late than never and decides that the best gesture to send Lily to the afterlife is a street parade. She gathers all of Lily's friends and leads the vibrant and jubilant procession down the street to honor Lily.

The Fundraising:

I am raising money for a location to shoot, but mostly I want to really create a beautiful parade and pageant for the opening and closing scenes. This story is about the beauty of life found in the most unlikely places. I will be able to save money on people and some equipment, but finding a location always stretches the student budget further than I can go.

I will be shooting in mid-April for one week, and then I will begin editing the project. The final screening will be in August, but I should have a DVD ready for my backers by mid-June.

If anyone would like a complete script, please let me know : holley.baker@yahoo.com

From the computer to the silver screen: With the help of this fund raising, We will be able to find actors, locations, and equipment. We will shoot the entire project in six days at the end of April.
