Spectacle is a 30-seat, collectively-run, non-profit microcinema in Brooklyn established and staffed entirely by volunteers. For the last five years, we've been screening repertory, independent and experimental cinema seven days a week, programming overlooked works, offbeat gems, contemporary art, radical polemics, live performance and more.
Housed in a former bodega and located at 124 S. 3rd St. in the heart of the rapidly changing neighborhood of Williamsburg, we're committed to providing an affordable cinematic experience for our community - our $5 admission goes directly toward paying the theater's bills.
Though we're small, we’ve earned some big accolades in our first five years, including being awarded "Best Weird Repertory Film Programming" by The Village Voice in 2013. This past year, we were selected to participate in the Museum of Art & Design's inaugural NYC Makers: The MAD Biennial, where we took over the museum's cinema for six weeks to present rare 35mm prints and special events.
Spectacle's talented volunteers create original trailers and posters for films that in some cases never had either. These custom trailers and posters have attracted attention in their own right, including exhibitions at MoMA, MoMA PS1, MoMA Warsaw, and MAD Museum.
There are a few reasons why we're doing this campaign now. We've just secured a new 10-year lease, so we can finally make the improvements we've always dreamed of. We're thrilled about our new lease, but it did include a sizable rent increase and a requirement that we redo our facade.
If we want to keep showing movies for only $5 (and we do), we need to supplement our ticket sales. We would rather not do this by raising ticket prices or selling $12 single-origin chocolate bars and açaí bowls. Instead, we have a long-term plan that includes grants and other funding to secure the theater's eternal survival. Our short-term plan relies entirely on your support and the success of this Kickstarter campaign. With the funds we raise in this campaign we will sustain the theater through the end of next year and be able to improve the quality of Spectacle's projection and sound. Your donation matters right now - you will save Spectacle and we cannot do this without you!
Remember Death by Audio, Monster Island, GLASSLANDS and the other DIY art, film, and music venues that used to dot Williamsburg? We don't want to be remembered. We want to LIVE and we need your help!
Change is not always good. We love this charming and scrappy former bodega, and we promise we won't change it too much!
What we will do:
+ upgrade to a new and better projector and sound system
+ sound-proof the theater so that Brooklyn's sirens and screams no longer form part of our films' soundtracks
+ install upgraded 16mm projection capabilities (no more tripping over our projectionist extraordinaire John Klacsmann as you enter the theater for 16mm screenings)
+ install an actual HVAC system so you will no longer swelter in the summer nor freeze in the winter, and we'll build new risers so that you back-row people will be able to see the screen better
+ repair our sad-looking floor
+ redo our facade (but not in a lame way)
Independent spaces like Spectacle are rapidly disappearing from an increasingly bland and upscale Williamsburg. We screen your favorite movies you haven't seen yet for less than the price of a pour-over coffee and provide a safe space for obsessive film love amid a sea of theme bars. We're all volunteers, and we do this because we care!
Please help us reach our ultimate goal: for Spectacle to remain sustainable in its current model amid one of the most drastically changing neighborhoods in the United States. In other words, help us keep showing cool movies for $5.
Here are some highlights from the many exciting choices that await you. Don't hold back - some of these rewards will never be seen again!

SPECTACLE TOTE BAG ($35) - These tote bags are not the flimsy throw-away kind. They are super thick and durable and also the perfect size.
PFFR T-SHIRT ($50) - When we asked our friends at PFFR (creators of "Wonder Showzen", "Xavier: Renegade Angel" and "The Heart, She Holler") to design a limited edition t-shirt just for Spectacle, we knew they would peer deep into the theater's soul and reveal its true essence. Wow. They really nailed this one.
Or go for the gold and get the PFFR T-SHIRT AND MORE STUFF! ($100)- This PFFR-DESIGNED T-SHIRT comes with a digital download of our EPHEMERA: SAFETY FIRST program, a DVD compilation of our amazing ORIGINAL TRAILERS *AND* a BURNING S ENAMEL PIN!

ANDERS RAMSELL'S ORIGINAL PAINTINGS FROM BLADE RUNNER AQUARELLE EDITION ($150) - Limit 2!
Know a Blade Runner fan in your life? These paintings of Rick Deckard must belong to them! In 2013, we premiered the full length version of Anders Ramsell’s stunningly beautiful BLADE RUNNER AQUARELLE EDITION in which Ramsell created 12,597 aquarelle paintings. Each painting is approximately 1.5 x 3cm in size and together they form a 35 minute long paraphrase on the motion picture Blade Runner (1982) by Ridley Scott (itself, of course, an adaptation of Philip K. Dick). You can see more of the original aquarelle paintings here!

OR, YOU CAN:
Claim the ultimate seat-naming right at Spectacle. Yes. ($5000) - Not only will our toilet be adorned with your name or other message (pending approval) - you will also receive a LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP and your name will be listed as a SUPPORTER on our website!

Risks and challenges
Our goal is to create a better cinematic experience for our audience while preserving the DIY, improvised, idealistic, punk rock spirit of Spectacle. It's something that we plan to consider carefully and constantly as we make changes to a space that is beloved to many just as it is.
Being a volunteer-run space, we're tackling many physical improvements by ourselves. This means construction might take longer than expected, especially given that we want to do this right. On the bright side, we have some great professionals on board, including an amazing, overqualified architect (the only person any of us know who went to Harvard) who loves Spectacle and is donating his time and expertise. We've also built in the upcoming holidays as a time-cushion to account for the unexpected. Look forward to Spectacle's January 2016 reopening, when we'll commemorate the first five years of Spectacle with our most epic "Best Of" series so far: "Aim for the Trash Can - Best of Spectacle 2010-2015"!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
