BMX The Game is a BMX simulation game, to be released december 2013 for PC, XBOX360 and PS3. The game is being developed by people that love BMX, that ride BMX and we want to capture the actual BMX feelings in a game.
Our aim is to make a realistic game, where grinding powerlines and doing a tailwhip isn't easy, like in the real world. A game in which you will feel like you're actual riding. A game in which creativity and beauty are combined. A game in which there aren't fixed challenges, and the challenge is improve day by day, achieving new tricks and new lines. Obviously we want the best graphics possible with HD textures and a realistic illumination. We want to make the best BMX game. We are heading in right direction.
We have thousands of ideas to add in the game, and you guys have thousands too. Thats exactly what we want to take advantage of, and we are making a game in which you can participate in its development. In fact, on our website we have a forum to discuss ideas, and what we want in our game. A game in which the future players have direct connection with the development team. The BMX community participate actively in the development.
So here we are, on Kickstarter, because we have taken the first step. We have started to work and build a solid base. But we need funds and support. The more support we get, the more we can devote more resources to the development, making the game larger in less time.
The life cycle of BMX The Game is evolutive. This means that the aim is to start with a simple and
powerful base. A base with realistic physics, good graphics, good controls and
a park editor. A base upgradable in all the aspects. So update by update we
will add more features, more options, more pieces, more tricks, more bike
parts, more maps and famous spots. In this way, you guys can enjoy the game as
soon as possible, and get free updates which allows the game to grow constantly
whilst you play.
For that reason, we
start with a symbolic funding goal. This funding goal guarantees to start our
life cycle based on updates. But if we reach this goal, we will dedicate all
the extra funds to develop more and faster.
One of the best
points of BMX The Game is its physics. The game will simulate the movements and
real sensations like when you ride. So we are working hard to make it as realistic
There are hundreds of
tricks and variations in BMX. We are making an innovative controls system that
allows to imitate the real movements with the analog sticks, make combos and
variations on tricks. Controlling BMX The Game is not going to be easy. You
should know how to do a trick in the real life, before you do it inside the
game. Also, a trick may vary by the rhythm and sync with which you do it.
We want to make a realistic
game, opening the creativity and beauty of BMX. We think putting all our effort
and resources in making the game bigger, realistic, full of features instead a
career mode, is a good idea.
BMX The Game will have a bike
park editor. It will allow you to build a park with hundreds of pieces. All the
pieces are customisable in size, shape and material. You could make your own
pieces with wood planks, work the dirt with a shovel tool and make dirt jumps
and racing trails as well as build your own pools. Your imagination is your
limit. Then, you will share your creations with the community.
We want to
make this game for PC, XBOX360 and PS3. We are using Unity 3d engine, which
allows us to develop for these platforms. Anyway, making a console videogame is
pretty expensive. For that reason, we don't know when we will release BMX The Game for consoles. It depends on the funds reached in kickstarter and the
support of the community.
So, we will
make the PC version to be released in December. And depending on the goal
reached and your support, we will release for consoles in december or later. We
will give you the game for the three platforms at same time in the same reward.
3 for 1. It means when you pledge for a digital game copy, you will receive the
PC version on December, and XBOX360/PS3 versions in December (if we get enough
funds) or later.
If we don't
reach enough funds to pay consoles licenses, we will still looking funds to release
in consoles but it will take time. We will need your support guys to be
listened by game publishers. We hope to get enough funds to release BMX The Game for all three platforms on december.
We have designed a
development-funding plan based on milestones. The more fundings reached, the
more features and options will be in the game in its launch.
Realistic physics: we are making a good simulation of bmx behaviour in multiples scenarios.
Real movements and animations
using motion capture: we are capturing
basic moments. We will add them to our game to get smooth animations.
Realistic and natural bails
system: we will develop a system that
allows to simulate realistic falls and bails.
Real trick system: to make a trick the player has to make
gestures with the analog sticks. This gestures are representations of the real
movement of the trick in the real life.
Replay editor: the player can edit his replays to create a
video and share it on youtube.
Character customisation: the game character is fully customisable.
The player can change the body, face, hair, and clothes of the character and
create the rider that he/she wants. Also it's possible to customise the riding
Bike customisation: You can build your own bike with real bike
parts. Also you can paint every part, choose the number of pegs or select
editor: Create your park with hundreds of
customisable pieces or create your own park pieces. You can shape the terrain
and create your park in concrete, wood or dirt. And also you can create racing
events. Then share it all with the community.

Our aim is launch a
stable version in December 2013. But you can access previous versions
before that. Public beta in November 2013, private beta in October 2013 and the
alpha in August 2013.
As we said, the
higher the goal reached, the more development resources. But we are focused to
maintain December as the launch date in any milestone. And the game has an
evolutive life cycle, so after the official launch, we will still be working on
it, and it will grow by updates.
We are Barspin
Studios, and we were born from Shader Media in Barcelona.Shader Media is a
company that develops lots of 3D solutions. Industrial and medical 3D procedure
simulators, 3D catalogs, VR holograms and other 3D solutions. Most are projects
on demand. We have always developed these solutions with a video game engine so
we have a good base. We have experience in modelling, texturing, animation,
motion capture, 3D scanning and many other techniques to make a game.
A few months ago,
some members of the "Shader Media" team thought it was the moment to
use our knowledge, experience and resources, to start a dream: make a bmx game.
The three co-founders of Barspin Studios are riders and we have been waiting
years for a game. We were very excited when EA released Skate. We thought that
they could make a bmx game too. Six years later, we are tired of waiting. So if
we have the experience and resources to make it, why not?
We put everything we
have into BMX The Game: our experience, our resources, our hours and our money.
But most important, we want to make it huge with your help. We are on an early
development stage. But we have a lot of things designed. We have developed the
concept and many of the processes. We also have the most tedious part of
development: program structure and core diagrams. We are developing the control
system and the integration of the animations. We have also started to model to
begin programming the mechanical and physical. We are also working on a motion
capture system and scanning models. But there's still work to do.

Risks and challenges
Like any other game, BMX The Game is facing to some risks. The main risk in game development are the delays.
Sometimes a development task can take more time than you expect. That's very important when you have a project with a deadline. We have experience in this kind of project. In Shader Media many of our industrial projects had very stringent deadlines. And very stringent conditions too. That's why we have made a full development plan taking care about these possible delays to avoid any delay. In addition, we are ready to face any other problem or difficulty during the development.
A challenge is to be a mutliplatform game. As we told, we are using Unity engine, which allows development for PC, PS3 and Xbox360. In addition we need funds to pay the licenses to Microsoft and Sony to be able to develop BMX The Game in their platforms. It will be a challenge get enough funds to pay them. We hope to reach that milestone.
We want to remark that we are ignoring a part in this game. Part which is perhaps the most difficult and complex part of a typical game. We are talking about the storyline. Can you imagine what means are needed to develop a story mode? Make a script, levels, challenges, animations, renders, record voices, testings and lot of things that eventually can delays the games. BMX The Game doesn't have story mode. So we are focused on physics, graphics, controls and customisation, so we have far fewer risks.
If we reach higher goals, then we will add more resources and professionals to work on the project. Far to be a risk, this will be a help with facing the problems better.
And of course, we are ready to work hard to face any difficulty. So, we are very confident in the December release date with our roadmap.
We are confident to raise enough funds. Sadly, If we don't then we will have to see why. In addition, it could mean fail in front of possible partners and sponsors, so we would have to discontinue the development.
