About this project

The Fifties: A Tale In Black & White, is a conceptual photographic and fashion-based work that looks subvert issues of race, class and gender by creating of a re-visionist history of 1950's America.

Using African/African-American models of all hues and through the use of African textiles re-envisioned into 1950's couture inspired looks, the work will infuse iconic 1950's imagery (think Cecil Beaton) with meaning specific to African/African-American culture & history. To further evoke this era the work will be shot on location in New York in a historic brownstone in Harlem.

It is my hope, that this piece functions as both a voice for those glamorous Black women who never were afforded the spotlight and as a counterpoint to racial stereotyping and gender roles of the time.

To this end, the fashion featured in this work will play a pivotal role and will function as the anchoring element and as a framework through which to view history. That said, I am seeking funding for the commission & creation of the African textile 1950's couture inspired looks to be featured, in addition to all costs associated with photo production (equipment, props, travel, etc....).

Please help me to realize this dream and to re-envision era in history which has excluded so many.

Is my pledge amount publicly displayed?
No. Only you and the project creator will be able to see your pledge amount.

If I donate, when can I redeem the reward?
All rewards, big and small, will only happen if our goal is met. If we do meet our goal, immediately after the deadline you will be contacted to discuss how/when you'd like to receive your incentive!

What if I don’t want the incentive, I just want to support?
No problem, there is a button that you can select if you don’t want the reward.

Can I Gift An Incentive?
YES! If you would like to donate to the project but give the reward to someone as a gift, go through all the normal process of making a donation in your name. For billing purposes, this action must be in your name. After our deadline, we will send a message to you on Kickstarter. (It will be forwarded to the email address you provided). Please reply with all the person’s information that is to receive the reward. We will make sure they are the person who receives the reward.

Can we exceed the goal?
YES! This would truly be amazing. Exceeding our goal would allow me to extend the scope of all the wardrobe being designed and ultimately make a better project. Kickstarter will allow as much money as is given before the deadline. We have set our goal at the low end so if we were able to exceed it, it would be a dream come true and it would enable us (and I say us, because so many people are coming together to help to make this project happen) to FULLY realize this labor of love.

Can I increase my pledge once it’s been made?
YES! Once you donate to our campaign, you may want to change your incentive reward to a different one, or increase your pledge amount. To do so, go to Kickstarter and sign in. If you go to our campaign page, the green “Back This Project” button has been replaced with a blue “Manage Your Donation” button. Click it and you can enter a new amount, or choose a new incentive.

What happens if the money isn’t raised in time?
If our goal isn’t met before the deadline, no money changes hands and no shoot happens. We want to avoid this scenario at all costs!

Who does the money go to?
Every penny (minus the fees for Kickstarter’s involvement) will go directly to the "The Fifties: A Tale in Black & White" budget - i.e. Your money goes directly to the funding of this groundbreaking conceptual work!

I'm not in the US. Can I still pledge to projects?
Yes. You can pledge from anywhere.
