Who is behind Flexo?
The genius behind Flexo. Mark has always been an inventor, and was ‘modifying’ his parents possessions from a young age. He’s never stopped since, constantly creating and finding improved ways for things to work.
He brings a huge amount of energy, know how, interest in modern technology and social media skills to the team. James also shares his family’s passion for bringing fun to people’s lives as well as bringing joy to those less fortunate.

Flexo was born in a physio clinic, well the idea for it was anyway. Mark was waiting for his appointment for his torn bicep tendon and looking at images of the human body. He found it fascinating the way solid matter, such as bone, was made flexible by tendons and muscles and marveled at the perfect engineering that makes our bodies move and work in such an incredible way.
As an inventor of games and toys it suddenly struck Mark that this theory could be applied to toys as well – especially building bricks – and that flexibility would help make them even more dynamic and enjoyable than before.
The Stoltens had always been a Lego family and Mark realised that it would be the perfect product to try this on. It worked superbly, much to the excitement of all; Mark and Elizabeth’s sons and daughter are now 25, 15,12 and 23 years old and were totally entranced by it, you never really outgrow Lego do you?
Lego is loved by so many people, big and small, around the world and Mark and his team love the idea of enhancing it even further by adding more movement and flexibility. Lego does Lego best but the thought of being able to bring something additional to an already amazing experience excites them enormously.
The whole family and team is also thrilled at the possibility of this product fostering increased creativity in children, a trait that is being lost with the influence of digital technology.
The possibilities are endless with Flexo: catapults, suspension on cars, a bow and arrow, balls, swing bridges, train tracks it’s only really limited by the child (or big child’s) imagination. The Flexo team also hope, in a world where parents are constantly under pressure to buy new and exciting toys for the kids, this may be a cost effective option. Buying one Flexo kit will mean hours and hours, in fact years and years of play and fun. That’s got to be a great solution, right?
Risks and challenges
As with any new idea the prototyping stage can be full of challenges, with costly redesigns. We have already completed all the stages of our prototyping and have a fully functional design prototype, which was used to build the examples in the page above
Manufacturing is a key element to the Flexo experience. Factors like shape, functionality, quality and accuracy all contribute to the end result of Flexo being a great building experience. We manufacture Flexo here in New Zealand to ensure its highest quality. We are partnered with some on New Zealands top manufactures and have been building our relationship over the past year. Our manufacturing partners have been an important part of preparing this kickstarter offering and are ready to hit the green button the minute our kickstarter makes its goal.
Keeping a project running smoothly and on time is always a challenge. We have one successful kickstarter under our belt and even delivered all our rewards on time (bar the odd lost parcel in other countries - which we have rectified). We have learnt so much from our first Kickstarter and excited to bring this experience to our new campaign to ensure and even better experience for our backers.
Order fulfillment is a big part of any Kickstarter campaign. We have decided to use Backerkit for our KS campaign to ensure clear communication with our backers and timely delivery. While New Zealand is often referred to as 'down under' we have a strong partnership with NZ Post who will be delivering our rewards to our backers and ensuring safe and timely delivery. They have a wealth of experience and are one of New Zealand's premium post and courier services. We are excited to bring better shipping prices and packaging to backers this Kickstarter.
One of Flexo's great attributes is that it can be used as an add-on for current toy construction bricks like Lego and Mega Bloks, because of this our quality assurance regime will be such that we can ensure our standards are equal to those of major brands. We will conduct strict testing especially in the area of brick clutch.
A unique challenge we face in this Kickstarter will be the packaging of our new bricks given there are so many different bricks and colours. We have already begun designing and implementing a packing system that will allow us to quickly and effectively pack all our rewards packs ensuring that there are the correct number of pieces and colours.
