About this project
A rod, a line, a fly.
Thanks for checking out our project. As you probably know, we like to fish. It's just a fun thing to do when you're outdoors. In case you didn't know, most metropolitan areas are located near fishable rivers, lakes, and streams. In fact, some of the best fishing can be found around cities like New York, San Francisco, Denver, and many more. Pretty much anywhere there are mountains, there are fishable streams.
Traditional fly fishing can be such a daunting sport. First you have to go out and figure out what gear you need to purchase. Then you have to figure out how to tie a bunch of knots and cast correctly. Lines get tangled more often than not and it seems most of your time is not actually spent fishing. We are aiming to create a more minimalist approach to fishing. A rod, a line, and a fly is all you need to catch a fish so why complicate things?
Tenkara is basic. You just attach a line to the end of your rod and there are no reels or guides. On the end of your line you have a fly, and thats it! Here on KickStarter we are presenting two different rods:
Our rods weigh 3.4 ounces!
They measure about 20 inches when they are closed, and 12 feet when opened. That's just ridiculous. You can take these rods anywhere you go and not even notice it. Here are few scenarios where these rods rock!:
- You have an hour after work to stop by the river and throw a line in.
- Ultra light backpacking, adding 4 ounces to your pack means you can catch fish all day and not have to pack meat :)
- You have a business trip and have some down time, leave the golf clubs at home and just pack your rod.
- Teaching your kids how to fish.
- Small stream where the old fly rod just doesn't seem to work.
Our rods have been designed to be extremely functional and we think they look pretty darn nice as well. We have partnered with a rod manufacturer who has been in business for decades. We will be using high quality cork and other great materials in the rod making process. The line we are including with the packages is hand made in Boise by Zen outfitters and is honestly some of the best line I have ever used. We will even hand tie the flies for this project!
My name is Drew Hollenback and I have been fishing since I was a kid. I am by no means an expert angler but I just love to get outdoors and fish.
I have many years of working with design and manufacturing for many different products so thought I would try my luck with something I am actually passionate about. Last year I began sketching out some designs and some features that I would like to see in a Tenkara Rod. Then I went over to China where 90% of the worlds fishing equipment is made and met with a slew of manufacturers. I was able to find someone who could make the high quality rod that I desired and had the capabilities to do large quantities and still maintain the quality standards.
We have gone through several prototypes of the rods to get them where they are today. We had to make several changes: using a higher quality cork, adding some stronger materials to places we thought were needed, and we have even added a swivel tip to the end for added flexibility. After the project is over, our manufacturer is ready to produce the tenkara rods. I have met with them in person and have a great relationship with them and am confident they will be able to produce our design in a timely manner. We want to get people fishing as soon as possible.
After the project is over, we will be posting how to videos on YouTube so any new anglers don't have to feel like noobs going out for the first time. Fishing is one of the most popular and enjoyable sports available in the outdoors. It no longer has to be difficult to get into it, just a rod, a line, and a fly. Thanks for the support!

Risks and challenges
We have partnered up with a great rod manufacturer and have prototyped the $%&# out of these rods and have caught tons of fish small to large. The turnaround time on these shouldn't be more than a month or so depending on the quantity we raise on KickStarter, so we just hope we can deliver in time. It will also be a challenge figuring out the best way to ship the rods. We will need to track down a padded tube of some sort.
Another risk is that we claim that Tenkara fishing is a simple and effective way to fish (we really want people to be able to catch fish and have fun). A risk is that someone gets the setup, then doesn't know what to do next. So we are planning on making a slew of videos that show detailed processes for setting up the rod, casting, pulling in a fish, etc. These videos will be shown to backers so they will be confident in going out and getting some fish.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
