Meet the NORTHLAND: Join an intimate five-week book club—with a signed copy of the book—that takes you behind the scenes of America's northern border, led by the author, Porter Fox.
AS FEATURED IN The New York Times, Porter Fox spent three years paddling, hiking, riding a freighter and driving across the northern tier of the U.S., documenting America's "forgotten" border. NORTHLAND follows his 4,000-mile adventure and reveals the boundary's fascinating history, landscape and critical issues like border security, climate change, Native American injustice, and oil and water wars.
In partnership with two of the great independent voices in publishing today—W.W. Norton and Strand Books—this campaign will take backers on a guided tour of America's north country with exclusive video, images, audio interviews, archival material, maps and writing. Backers will also get a signed, hardcover copy of the book delivered to their door.
“Northland is a revelation: a gripping east-west journey 3,987 miles along an invisible line...” — McKenzie Funk, author of Windfall
AMERICA'S NORTHERN BORDER is the world’s longest international boundary, yet most Americans know very little about it. Porter Fox canoed the line along remote rivers in northeastern Maine and followed it over four of the five Great Lakes on a 740-foot freighter. In Minnesota, he paddled the Boundary Waters and explored the isolated Northwest Angle. After camping on the northern plains with protestors at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, he followed the forty-ninth parallel over the Rocky Mountains and North Cascades to the Pacific Ocean. Throughout, Porter describes the fascinating history of the boundary, the pristine wildernesses that surround it and the people who call it home.
"In this rip-roaring adventure story, Porter Fox illuminates every imaginable facet of the northern border: historical, natural, economic, environmental, geopolitical, and, above everything else, the human.” — Neel Mukherjee, author of A State of Freedom
$25, NORTHLAND + Book Club
BACKERS WILL BE INVITED to the NORTHLAND book club in August and will receive weekly multimedia dispatches from each section of the book, along with live Q&As with the author. The club will cover five sections of the book in five weeks, deep-diving into topics, places, history and the journey. Readers will meet and hear characters speaking about their corner of the NORTHLAND, see footage of some of the most remote corners of the U.S., ride across the Great Lakes on a freighter and drive backcountry roads as the story unfolds from east to west.
Share your love of the north with a fellow reader or traveler, send postcards from the NORTHLAND to your friends AND get a regional reading list for each section of the northern border—prepared by the author. Both signed books come with membership to the NORTHLAND Book Club, a postcard kit and a reading list.

Risks and challenges
It's hard to reach readers these days. So we're taking to Kickstarter to find them directly—and invite them to get onboard with NORTHLAND from the very beginning. We have a great book here and way more story than can fit in its pages. This invitation to a multimedia reading of the book—and an actual guided tour of the northland—is a way to share all of it while bringing together a community of like-minded readers, travelers and history buffs.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
