People. Place. Time.
That is how NOWHERE defines great travel writing: deep reporting, authentic storylines, compelling characters, unknown places. NOWHERE has been an online literary journal of travel writing (www.nowheremag.com) since 2008. Since 2016, we have collected the very best travel writing from our site in a Print Annual—stories about the longest sea voyage in history, hiding out with Kurdish rebels in Turkey, growing up in an American farm town, dogsledding across the northernmost point of land in the world—written by aspiring authors and pros like Dave Eggers, Nick Flynn, Will Oldham, David Quammen and many more…
The 2019 Print Annual is one of the best yet: deep, powerful and transportive stories that don’t just tell you about a place—they take you there.
In this issue, you will find stories about:
- Dog-sledding, wind songs, sea ice, reindeer hides and canine telepathy halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole.
- Fireworks, chicken barbecues, golden bullets and dead bodies in a school bus bound for California.
- Mareshas, bonfires, papyrus boats, Noah’s Ark, chanting rooms, Meskel and waterfalls in Ethiopia.
- Hostels, Andalusia, Tinder intercambio, ruffled gowns, coppers and incomprehensible finales in Sevilla, Spain.
- Segregated students, forty-cent bagels, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, velvet envelopes, redheaded wives and Solomon’s Mine in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.
- And lastly, cheekbones, rough sheets, bourbon, postcards and Hollywood romance in north-central Ohio.
The Review Review wrote, “Nowhere’s pages are full of the kind of stories mainstream travel magazines insert as an afterthought, a brief and rare glimpse into the traveler’s inner journey reflected through the exterior trip.”
We started NOWHERE with $50 and a domain name eleven years ago. We were a group of travel writers who were tired of reading—and writing—marketing-driven travel stories that have taken over much of travel media. We were tired of the templates, requests to include a brand name in our write-up or to cover at least one luxury resort. We were tired of selling things, because we got into this business to discover things.
We started NOWHERE to bring back old-school, immersive travel writing like Holiday, Colliers and the Saturday Evening Post used to run. Jack Kerouac was a travel writer back then. Arthur Miller was a travel writer. Hemingway, Faulkner, Jan Morris, Steinbeck and Mary McCarthy were travel writers, and their stories ran thousands, not hundreds, of words long.
Deep, powerful and transportive stories that don’t just tell you about a place—they take you there.
We wanted travel features that didn’t just tell you where to stay or what to do in a place, but made you feel, smell, taste and hear it. We wanted deep knowledge of a city we’d never been to, told by writers who spent months or years there, not days. We launched the magazine online so we could publish it instantly in every country in the world. More than six hundred travel features later, we now publish to a readership of 20,000 across 119 nations.
One hundred percent of our content comes from submissions—much of it from biannual writing contests that put work by career and first-time writers in front of seasoned editors. We receive thousands of stories every year and sift through them slowly and thoughtfully. Our stories have won Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Awards and been anthologized in Best American Travel Writing. The Review Review wrote, “Nowhere’s pages are full of the kind of stories mainstream travel magazines insert as an afterthought, a brief and rare glimpse into the traveler’s inner journey reflected through the exterior trip.”

All of that takes a tremendous amount of time and a surprising amount of money. We launch a Kickstarter campaign every year to pay for NOWHERE, bring in a new crop of readers and writers, check in with our loyal supporters and shout out to the world that in the most challenging climate the publishing industry has ever seen, WE’RE STILL HERE!
The Print Annual is the cause we rally around to make it happen. It is a collection of the best stories, art and photography of the year from NOWHERE. If you are new to the magazine or haven’t had time to keep up over the the last year, this is a way to see the best of the best.
To us, travel is not about buying and selling; it is about discovering. With the 2019 Print Annual, you will discover far corners of the world, right from your couch.
Risks and challenges
Sourcing, editing, printing and distributing a magazine is incredibly difficult these days. Doing it with a staff you can count on one hand, with no financial backing or regular advertising, is even harder. Pure passion for writing and travel fuels NOWHERE. That and our readers. We literally couldn’t do this without you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
