THE FIRST PROOF IS IN
We received the first proof from the printer and it looks terrific. No changes necessary, so we put in an order for all of the first editions. They should be here by Tuesday and will be in the mail to you a few days after that.
It's a beauty. Stay tuned for more sneak peaks...
Since 2008, Nowhere has been devoted to longform, immersive literary travel writing—that doesn't just tell a story, but takes you to a place. We don't run top-10 lists. We don't review spas. We published more than 1,000 travel stories from 65 different countries exclusively online—until last year when a banner Kickstarter campaign helped us launch our first Print Annual.
Kickstarter supporters will receive a special "First Edition" cover and a travel planner in the back of the book.
After four print runs, last year's Print Annual made its way to mailboxes, back pockets and coffee tables around the world. We were incredibly honored when Bill Bryson selected one of the stories for the 2016 Best American Travel Writing anthology. The annual is printed in the U.S. with color images and a durable matte cover than can travel the world with you. Kickstarter supporters will receive a special "First Edition" cover, a travel planner in the back of the book and an Acknowledgements page listing all Kickstarter supporters who donate $50 or more before November 27.
In the 2017 Annual:
- Drew Bratcher writes a "Letter from Istanbul"
- Jeannine Ouellette follows her childhood through the American West
- Josh Weiner crafts a portrait of Kosovan Jews
- Richard Hague floats Kentucky's Big Bone River
- Douglas Despres photographs the Standing Rock Sioux protest
- Nick Flynn scavenges for collages in Zanzibar
- Colleen Khachatourians gets lost in Saigon
- Kali VanBaale grows up in drought-plagued Iowa
- Corinna Cook discovers life and death on an Alaskan ferry
Bill Bryson selected a story from last year's Print Annual for the 2016 Best American Travel Writing anthology.
With your support, the journal will be printed in early December. Early-release issues will be sent to Kickstarter supporters before Christmas, along with other rewards. (See below for reward choices and details.)
For almost a decade, we have published stories based on their quality, efficiency, detail and artfulness. The destination is secondary. What we like is the writing, photos, narrative skips and jumps and scraps of detail most other travel magazines would leave out. We like to put the reader in the setting.
Publishing in print form means you can now take the stories with you anywhere. We hope you support this project and become a part of the Nowhere journey.

Risks and challenges
Sourcing, editing, printing and distributing a magazine is incredibly difficult these days. We have watched a dozen travel magazines start and fold in the last 8 years. Doing it with a staff you can count on one hand, with no financial backing or regular advertising, is even harder. Pure passion for writing and travel fuels Nowhere. That and our readers. We literally couldn't do this without you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
