New Reward! Rare edition of THE NEED FOR ROOTS with preface by T. S. Eliot

Help get us to $20,000 by midnight. Pledge $150 for the 1952 edition of Weil's THE NEED FOR ROOTS with a preface by T.S. Eliot. In it, Eliot writes: "We must simply expose ourselves to the personality of a woman of genius, of a kind of genius akin to that of the saints." Critic's Pick in NY Magazine and just 10 hours to go!

Dear Friends and Supporters,

We're excited to announce that New York Magazine has chosen AN ENCOUNTER WITH SIMONE WEIL as a Critic's Pick! Read capsule review here.

Thanks to all of you we've almost reached our $20,000 goal. We need to raise just $630 to get there by midnight tonight. So, we're making one last appeal for your help to get us to the finish line.

  • increase your donation by a small amount (an extra $20 gets you a t-shirt)

Help in whatever way you can. All funds raised will go towards our national and international outreach campaign. We can't do it without you!

Tickets are now on sale for our opening week (March 23 - 29) at the Quad Cinema in NYC. If you can, we urge you to come opening weekend. How we do then will determine whether the film gets extended for a second week. Small independent films like AN ENCOUNTER WITH SIMONE WEIL depend on word-of-mouth publicity, but too often the film's off the screen by the time people hear about it.

We've lined up some great special guests including Sylvie Weil, Sylvère Lotringer, and Anna Brown (all of whom also appear in the film). Check out our screenings page for schedule and updates.

Get involved with spreading the word about the premiere! Forward the attached screening flyer and/or print it out and put it up at your workplace, local cafe, or bookstore. Students with valid ID get in to weekday matinees for $6.50.

MANY, MANY THANKS for your support and your patience

signing off,

Julia, Alex, Mazal, and the rest of the Simone Weil team

Great News and an Irresistible New Reward!

Dear Friends and Supporters,

I'm thrilled to announce that at 3:01 AM Tuesday morning we reached and surpassed our goal of $15,000! We can't thank you enough for helping us get there. This means we can fund our opening at the Quad Cinema, March 23 - 29.

Now we have just 4 days left and we're pushing to get to $20,000 by midnight Saturday, March 17. These additional funds will make it possible to bring AN ENCOUNTER WITH SIMONE WEIL to other communities across the country and the world, covering such costs as a theatrical booker and publicist, targeted online promotion, publicity materials, and a discussion guide.

If you, our supporters, each increase your pledge by just $20 we'd get there! And to thank you we'll give you our latest reward: an iconic Simone Weil T-Shirt (pictured below) designed by our very own Mazal Bohbot Berrie. We also still have one set of VIP tickets to the opening-night screening & party on March 23, and an Associate Producer credit for $2,500.

To close, here's some exciting news: I can't supply much detail yet, but we've just learned that the film will have its UK and Canadian festival premieres in May! Stay tuned for more updates.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Half way there!

Dear Friends and Supporters,

We've reached the mid-point of our campaign. And thanks to all of your generous pledges we've raised almost $10,000! But we still have a ways to go to reach and surpass our goal by March 17.

I've just returned from showing AN ENCOUNTER WITH SIMONE WEIL at Canada's University of Waterloo where we raised close to $250 from the audience. Every contribution large or small makes a huge difference. The more I show the film in a group context, the more committed I am to getting it into the theater. It's a film that should be seen with other people, in a forum where their can be discussion afterwards.

- Post the link to our kickstarter campaign on your Facebook wall:

- Tweet about the campaign using hashtag @SimoneWeilMovie

-  Email your friends, colleagues, and family about the film. Tell them why AN ENCOUNTER WITH SIMONE WEIL is worthy of their support.

With all our ongoing gratitude,

Julia, Alex, and the rest of the Simone Weil team
