The Story in a Nutshell
Distractions is the story of Gill, a failed bodyguard who realizes that his quest to revenge the assassination of his client is nothing but a desperate attempt to avoid dealing with both the death of his wife and with taking on the scariest challenge he will ever face…fatherhood.
Set against the backdrop of a near future Chicago that has returned to the dark days of violence, corruption, and organized crime that defined the Windy City in the 1920’s and 1930’s, Distractions is a thriller with noir-ish undertones.
Gill's journey poses questions about moral ambiguity, loyalty, and personal responsibility. This is a story about recognizing the distractions we cling to, to avoid dealing with the most painful parts of life, and finding the courage to let those painful experiences change us and mold us into better people.
Distractions is a graphic novel told in 4 parts. Each of the 4 parts is being released separately in digital formats. The print edition will contain all 4 parts as well as some great additional "behind the scenes" material.
Parts 1 & 2 are finished! With your support we can finish Parts 3 & 4.
The book is colored in a "reverse Wizard of Oz" style. The first part, before the murder of Gill’s wife, is in full color, but the majority of Gill’s story is told using a very muted palette to reflect his emotional state. There are a few important pops of color that break through Gill’s grey-colored haze, but full-color will only return if Gill can find a way out of the labyrinth of distractions he’s hiding in.
Distractions was designed from the ground up to look great not only on the printed page, but as a digital comic presented on small screens like the iPhone and other hand-held devices. Each page (maybe “screen” is a better word) is drawn with a “wide-screen” aspect ratio to take full advantage of the screen real-estate.
The text and the artwork were designed to be clear on even the oldest "smart phone".
Although the guiding concept of the project is “digital before print,” print considerations were always kept in mind. For example, each of the first 3 chapters is 44 “screens” long, and as two screens stack nicely to fit a traditional comic page, it works out to 22 pages. The 4th chapter will come in at a higher page count as there is too much climactic awesomeness to contain in 22 pages!
Wes Sturdevant is obsessed with story. His passion to become a storyteller led him from his home town of Bloomington, IN, to Chicago where he studied at Columbia College Chicago, and earned a BA in film production followed by an MFA in fiction writing. Distractions is one of a number of graphic literature projects he is developing. He is also working on other writing projects for both children and adults. His off-beat supernatural thriller Dirt Bird is available from Amazon and from ebook retailers including Apple, Barnes & Noble, Sony, and Amazon.
Wes lives in Indianapolis, where his lovely wife, darling baby girl, affectionate cat, and irrepressible three-legged mutt, somehow find a way to tolerate him.

Maza (aka Milorad Vicanovic) is an extremely efficient and prolific illustrator whose talent and versatility allows him to do illustrations for books and magazines, as well as comics. Besides Distractions, he is currently working on two graphic novels for French publishers; Wunderwaffen for Soleil and Lady Spitfire for Delcourt. His comic portfolio includes Triangle Rose, and two tomes of the Vekovnici graphic novel series and he is the creator of The Uninvited Hero. Maza also organizes Salon Stripa Laktasi, an annual comic festival that gathers together the most important artists from the Balkans.
Maza lives in Laktasi, Bosnia and Herzegovina, where his wife and two sons occasionally let him use his computer. If you ask him why he is an artist he will tell you, “There's no life without drawing and breathing.”

What will we do with the money?
Achieving our $3000 goal will make a nice dent in the myriad of expenses involved in producing Distractions. This includes covering all of the costs involved in producing and delivering those sweet backer rewards, as well as some of the tools (both physical and digital) that Maza and I use in creating the book. If we exceed our goal we are likely to blow the additional money on Gatorade to replenish the electrolytes lost via the sweat equity we have, and will continue to, put into this project. Maza might also use some of the money to feed his cat.

Please note that Distractions is intended for mature readers
Distractions is not the only collaboration between Maza and I. He and I have been working together on a 23 page children's picture book titled Clever Little Hermes. It’s my retelling of the classic myth about how the infant Hermes (the Greek messenger god) pulled a clever prank on his brother Apollo (the sun god). The Illustrations are a collaboration between Maza, who did the drawings, and Ozren Miždalo, who colored and textured them.
Through a special arrangement with Maza and Ozren, I’m now able to offer backers of the Distractions Kickstarter advance copies of both the paperback print edition and a PDF edition of Clever Little Hermes!
I tried my best to keep the new rewards simple. Basically, you can upgrade most reward levels to include a paperback print copy of Clever Little Hermes for an additional $15. There are also options for getting more than one print copy and an option to receive a PDF copy.
Already a backer?
If you are already a backer and you would like to adjust your pledge to get your advance copy/copies of Clever Little Hermes, all you have to do is use the “Manage Your Pledge” button, adjust your pledge amount, and choose the reward you would like.
Thanks for taking the time to check out Distractions and the new Clever Little Hermes rewards!
