We are Heartwood Roastery, a dedicated and passionate Cleveland area specialty coffee roaster. Our mission is to source the best possible raw coffee from around the world, roast to perfection focusing on the specific characteristics that make each coffee unique, and hand them off to you within a day or so after roasting for the most fresh cup of coffee you have ever enjoyed.
So what makes our coffee special, different, or unique? Isn't coffee just...coffee? Coffee is a lot like wine and craft beer, and is as special as its variants, such as farmer practices, that roast and brew masters develop carefully together. For us, this means choosing only perfectly ripe and hand picked coffees from farms all over the world, bringing them into our roasting facility and exploring the nuances and intricacies of each origin in relation to how we roast them.
While many other specialty and craft roasters across the country have paved the way and presented their version of this vision to their respective cities, we find that now is the time to open the doors of specialty coffee to the Cleveland area, a place where food and drink is already as unique and developed as its people. We are born and raised in Cleveland, and we understand the passion and responsibility ingrained in our community.
This Kickstarter campaign is an excellent way for you to help build this space. We envision a creative, simple, inspiring coffee shop planted among other growing businesses and places of entertainment that provides a great community workspace, a place to catch up with friends, a safe place to have a first date (or first anniversary!), or a welcoming meeting place for your own company. The Heartwood Café is also the perfect place to just stop in and grab your morning coffee and a pastry and run, or perhaps if you want to grab a bag of your favorite fresh roasted beans and that new piece of brew equipment you've been eyeing.
In addition to building a remarkable space where our professionally trained baristas can brew each cup of coffee to our standards for each customer, having a physical location will help us reach two of our founding beliefs. One of our goals is Education. Building this store will allow us to have recurring classes focusing on brewing at home, understanding the process of coffee, and coffee tastings. Another goal is Accessibility. With Heartwood now located in a central location with public hours, we can reach the many diverse people of the area and provide our customers with a place to buy Heartwood Coffee, manage their subscriptions, and overall create an inviting atmosphere where anybody will feel comfortable walking through the doors. Heartwood, although highly specialized and distinct, offers comforting hospitality to you, your friends, and even your mom.
Our funding goal for startup costs associated with building a coffee shop is set at $5,000. Please keep in mind that this is our minimum goal, and if we do not reach this goal, we do not get any pledges. With your help, we aim to reach even higher benchmarks, and at each additional mark, we will be able to offer the following improvements.
$15,000 pledged - Heartwood Cold Brew on Tap. Heartwood branded merchandise.
$20,000 pledged - Custom furniture built by local artisans.
$30,000 pledged - Liquor Permit - Coffee based beers and cocktails!!
Coffee Photograph Reward
Message from the photographer:
Time and time again, I am blown away by the love and support that is shown to me through our community in Kentucky. To say that I am Kentucky Proud is quite the understatement. In many ways, it has been photography that has helped me give back, build relationships, and impact my community in a positive way. I have to thank my big brother, whom I adore, for introducing photography to me. It began with an image of our childhood dog, Sandy, running through the snow. For whatever reasons, this photograph that my brother created, became the foundation for my love of photography. For any of you who may know my brother, you know, much like our Kentucky Community, he is one of the most selfless, generous, and genuine of men. At this time, he needs our help in accomplishing a dream-the opening of his first brick and mortar coffee shop, Heartwood Roastery. I thought if I could “sell” this specific photograph, we could help make a dent in the remaining funding that is needed to open the shop!
Each 5x7, matted print is $40. and is printed on metallic paper. For each $40 donation, I will print, matte, and mail this photograph to you in THANKS for helping support my brother!
Thank you, in advance, to my community, both near and far! Much like Heartwood Roastery’s slogan, lets continue to “GROW TOGETHER!”
Much Love & Warmth,
James’ little sister, Sarah Jane
Risks and challenges
Taking on a project like this is no walk in the park. Our lives are going to change, and we will be dealing with many new challenges. We have been successful for a couple years selling online and at markets, but preparing coffee and serving directly to our customers is new territory for us. Even so, we are ready and prepared to take on these new challenges.
Specifically, some of these challenges will be working directly with the city of Hudson to make sure our space is up to code and safe for our guests, working with the Health Department to satisfy all food safety requirements, and marketing the store to drive in traffic. Fortunately, we have faced these issues with our market and event stands and have learned volumes about how food businesses need to safely operate. We have also had to help promote events we were a part of, teaching us how to build a customer base. We will continue to participate in local markets and events, including the Hudson Flea to help get the word out.
As for rewards, there is little to no risk for you! Our Roastery is already fully operational, and rewards should be sent out without a problem. The remaining contributions will be used immediately to clean up the store, add some Heartwood touches, and maintain coffee and operations equipment (Grinders, Espresso Machines, Furnace, Water Heater, Water Treatment). These will be ready for opening day. As an emergency backup plan, the Roastery can support the cafe initially until a regular base of customers is set.
We are finalizing a specific menu, but the base ingredients have been chosen and we are ready to move forward.
It is possible that our opening day could be set back due to unseen circumstances, but we are prepared to deal with that, and will always update our contributors with the most current info.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
