Meet Peeqo, a delightful little personal robot that responds entirely through GIFs and videos.

The internet is ruled by videos and GIFs. With the rise of instant messaging, they have become a part of our daily vocabulary. We use them to succinctly express information, emotions, thoughts, feeling and reactions when words just won’t do. What if we could give that same freedom of expression to our devices?

Peeqo is truly one of a kind and is designed with one thing in mind - to provide little moments of delight and entertainment to get you through your day.

You also get to build him yourself. Peeqo comes as an affordable and easy to assemble DIY kit suitable for people of all ages and skill levels, so you too can experience the joy of building and customizing your own robot.

But to explain how we got here, first we must rewind a bit.

 A long, long time ago…

About two years ago, I put up a post on reddit detailing how I built Peeqo (the second version), a project which I had embarked on a few months prior for my thesis at NYU ITP. It quickly shot up to the top of reddit becoming the most upvoted DIY project of all time, got extensively covered in the media and racked up millions of views across social media.

Here’s the video first introducing Peeqo to the world:

Even though I had released all the files, designs and code, I began receiving thousands of queries from people around the world wanting to know how they could build their own. After reaching out and chatting with hundreds of them, it became clear - people wanted to build their very own Peeqo. After a year and a half of development, going back to the drawing board and redesigning Peeqo from scratch, that kit is now ready.

Build it yourself:

Peeqo comes as an affordable and accessible DIY kit that’s suitable for all ages.

Everything you need will come in the kit so you can get started with no hassle. No special tools required, no digging through your drawer in search of that #2 phillips screwdriver and no need to purchase an expensive soldering iron.

Take a look inside:

Peeqo is small, like really small and will sit discreetly next to you on our desk while you go through your day, ever ready to help. Standing at just under 7 inches tall, he packs a lot into a tiny frame.

  •  4” IPS screen for vibrant crystal clear all angle viewing

  • Dual omni-directional microphones

  • Two 3W Speakers for stereo sound

  • A 5MP camera

  • An LED ring for discreet notifications

  • Four programmable buttons

  • A unique 3DOF mechanism

  • A Raspberry Pi 3B+

Plug Peeqo directly into the wall using the provided 12V DC plug and he’s ready to go

Peeqo loves Pi:

Peeqo uses a Raspberry Pi 3/3B+ as his brains and this provides a ton of benefits:

  •  It immediately opens up a huge and thriving community.
  • As the Pi foundation releases newer boards, you’ll be able to plug in that board and boom, you now have a faster Peeqo. No planned obsolescence here.
  • If you have a spare Raspberry Pi 3/3B+ you can use your own Pi and choose a lower reward level. You’ll get everything you need except the pi.

Voice Detection:

Peeqo will work with Google Cloud Speech, Amazon Voice Services, Snips and open source alternatives like Jasper, Mycroft. There will be easy integrations for each and new speech to text services can be added. Please note though that certain services like Google cloud speech have a monthly limit on queries, beyond which you might have to pay those companies a nominal fee.

An in-house voice service is also being developed. If you choose you use this, there will be a fixed monthly charge which will be entirely opt-in.

Privacy:

Peeqo puts you in control of your privacy. Wakeword detection is always done offline and on-device using Snowboy (from kitt.ai). What this means is that nothing is streamed to the cloud unless you say the word ‘Peeqo’

Peeqo will come with easy integrations for:

  •  Cloud Services - Google Cloud Speech, Amazon Voice
  •  Open Source Services - Jasper, Mycroft
  •  Offline/On Device services - Snips

By selecting an offline service like Snips, you could run Peeqo entirely without a internet connection. You will however need to provide your own set of video/GIF responses and accept limited functionality such as the inability to get real time information like the weather.

You'll be free to choose a privacy level you are most comfortable with.

Showing not telling

Peeqo scours the net and uses sites like Giphy, Guggy, Vlipsy to get you the latest and greatest responses. You never get the same boring response to the same question, keeping it fresh and fun. You’ll always want to see what Peeqo has to say next.

You can also add your own custom set of favourite gifs and videos to be used as responses, personalizing your experience even further.

Personality:

Peeqo is not your average bot. His unique visual response system immediately bestows him with a vibrant personality. He also has several quirks which further add to his character so don't be surprised if he gets annoyed when you ask him the same question repeatedly or when he stops listening to you because you've not been listening to him.

Skills:

Peeqo will come with a bunch of preprogrammed skills so he's ready to use once assembled.

You will also be able to add new skills and custom responses easily without the need for any technical knowledge.

Weather, timers, smart device control, music are just some of the things you'll be able to do. And you can also link multiple Peeqo's together to send video and GIF responses from one to another.

 Open Source:

Peeqo will come with a bunch of preprogrammed skills. The code will also be open source which means community contributions will continuously improve the experience for all.

No matter your skill level, Peeqo has something for everyone:

I have no interest in coding - You don’t need to know how to code to use Peeqo. Peeqo will come with a number of preprogrammed skills right out of the box and continuous upgrades means his skill sets will keep improving.

I’m a beginner - With a unique visual response system Peeqo is an extremely fun platform to begin coding on. Use blockly to easily add your own skills to Peeqo and see the robot come to life through movements, audio and gifs.

I’m a seasoned developer - Peeqo’s software is built using Electron so you can use accessible web technologies (Javascript, HTML, CSS) to modify and tweak him to your heart's content. On the hardware side, the I2C pins are broken out so you can easily add in additional sensors if needed.

In the news:

From making it to the top of reddit (twice!) to being covered by scores of major publications nationally, internationally and even appearing on live TV, Peeqo is no stranger to the public eye. The press love him and you will to.

Shipping:

This product is EU friendly which means for all European backers it’ll ship from within the EU and save you from personally paying that pesky VAT! US customers will not have any additional charges either.

For other countries, before backing, make sure you are fully aware of any custom duties that might be imposed on imported goods. Last thing anyone wants is your experience of receiving Peeqo to be sullied by a surprise custom fee at your doorstep.

About me:

I’m Abhishek, an artist and maker and over the past few years I’ve built a number of projects that focus on one thing - bringing a smile to people’s faces. You might have even seen some of them. I recreated Super Mario Bros as a life size first person AR experience and then played it in Central Park, NYC in full Mario costume! I’ve using AI to get Alexa to respond to sign language, created a camera that 'prints' out a GIF, a shoe that you control and customize through your phone, a 20 ft dragon you ride to fly through a VR world and an interactive 40 foot billboard that went up in Times Square. I’ve also brought classic games like Street Fighter and horror movies like ‘The Ring’ to life using AR. Just like I have learnt from others who choose to share their knowledge, with each project, I’ve tried to give back to the community by sharing details about my builds so others too can benefit from my explorations.

This project has been a journey, both professional and personally. Just four years ago I didn’t know how to program, didn’t know the difference between an Arduino and a Raspberry Pi and couldn’t have even imagined building something like this. I’ve found that learning by doing is the best way to learn a new skill. Through Peeqo I want to provide a flexible platform through which you too can experience the joy of building your own robot, learn a bunch of things along the way and help shape the future of human-robot interaction.

I’m excited to share Peeqo with you. I’m all in on Peeqo and I hope you will be too.

Risks and challenges

Hardware has a way of continuously throwing curve balls to keep you on your toes. While buffers have been added in, component availability issues can cause delays. Plus Peeqo has to make the well trodden but sometimes unpredictable path in a container across the seven seas. While this helps lower shipping costs there are always chances of unforeseen delays. While all parts have been through a DFM (Design for Manufacturing) check and have been certified to be injection moldable, the current prototype has been built using a 3D printed version of these parts. Injection molding might lead to some changes in tolerances, I think this is a low risk issue but something to be aware off. Either way here’s what all we have going for us:

- The BOM (Bill of Materials) is complete
- Most suppliers are finalized and the production prototype (which you saw in the video) has been assembled from samples received from the various vendors.
- Two months have been set aside from the campaign end date to incorporate any feedback that may arise. Other than that no further product development needs to be done on the hardware side.
- I’m deliberately not offering variants at this time. Less variants, less complexity.

To hit economies of scale and achieve the reward levels prices, we need to get a backing of 1000 peeqo kits.

Peeqo isn’t fully grown up yet. He never will. Just like us, he’ll continue learning, improving and growing. With the help of you all, we can turn him into the most delightful robotic companion that will ever enter our homes. You might look back one day and recognize how you were there, at the very start and how far along we have come since then. This is where we start. It’s time to welcome robots into our lives.
