About this project
What is Citygram?
Citygram is a fully-interactive Apple App Store publication you'll find next to all your other favorite digital magazines in the Apple Newsstand. It has unique features and rich content you won't be able to find anywhere else.
Citygram is a monthly digital magazine made by your favorite Austin writers, artists, and designers - but it's not just for Austin. This is because Citygram focuses on bringing you stories on culture and lifestyle from people who are engaged in those fields every day. A prominent local artist will bring you stories on trends in the maker community. Respected interior designers will bring you practical tips and lessons in responsible design. A doctor and nutritionist will bring you articles on health and nutrition.
A gluten-free baker will tell you where she enjoys to eat and exactly what she orders from Austin's burgeoning restaurants (particularly useful for city dwellers and visitors alike).
Citygram gives popular bloggers, writers, and designers a chance to tell a crafted long form feature on topics they find most intriguing. We can help broadcast the great non-profit causes and messages that mean something not just to Austin, but to everyone in this modern era. We can give makers and artists a new worldwide channel to showcase their work and talents.
Citygram's contributors are people who live and love arts, culture, and design; they are professionals in their fields, and they'll bring you exclusive stories in these categories first.
Citygram does more than celebrate creative culture. It lets the world hear a new beautiful voice through a digital, and fully interactive platform. You’ve never seen or used anything quite like it, and we think you'll embrace this new medium for accessing content.
Why Citygram? Why a Digital Magazine?
I spent the past nine years working as an electrical engineer for a giant tech company - so it goes without saying that I have a fascination with technology and the new digital age we are living in. A little over a year ago I also started writing articles and taking pictures for Apartment Therapy. At the time this was merely an asterisk - a 'hobby' I juggled on the weekends beside my full-time job.
Apartment Therapy has contributors all over the world, but the fact that I was entering into this new venture in Austin literally changed my life. I was meeting people who defined themselves as artists, writers, and designers. They were happy, fulfilled, and deeply involved in a collaborative community. It truly inspired me.
With each house tour assignment I became more aware that I didn't want my worth to be determined by what I had acquired, but by what I created. As my priorities changed, I started to question why I spent the bulk of my time doing something that wasn't as fulfilling as the asterisk, while at the same time wondering how I could make that asterisk even more meaningful to me. That's when I got the idea for Citygram - a magazine that could affect real change by telling inspiring stories from the very people who inspired me.
Citygram started out in my mind as a digital publication because I was familiar with making things in that space and I felt like I could innovate there. Now that Citygram is almost a reality, I realize that Citygram is digital because it simply wouldn't work in print. We've built too many valuable features and too much unique utility into the platform. I read lots of digital magazines, and there's nothing quite like Citygram on any scale (local or national). All our articles for the first issue are done, and we just need your support so that we can deliver it to you. We can't wait for you to see it!
The Power of Small
Citygram is small - the whole issue comes to you directly from the work of myself and nine contributors. And we believe there's power in that fact. We all have a love for the community that makes this city great, and we believe this magazine can help our community reach new audiences.
We live in a special time and place where we can literally do anything and where we are all closer than ever before thanks to the connectivity of the Internet. That’s exactly how we were able to make Citygram, and precisely why we want to make it for you.

This is your chance to show support for Citygram and be among the first to be showcased in this new age of digital media. (Advertisement is subject to approval. A refund will be issued if we don't see a fit.)
Risks and challenges
If this Kickstarter is funded we'll be ready to submit our fully functional app to the Apple App Store, a process we haven't been through yet but one we've researched and are prepared for. There may be delays in getting the first issue through this channel, but I assure you that we are ready to handle and address any technicalities to get Citygram onto the Apple Newsstand and into your hands.
The launch team for Citygram is composed of talented, creative and independently successful individuals. What's become evident after forming the team is that collectively these minds are even greater, and I'm confident we'll be able to overcome any challenge to make our launch a successful one.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We want Citygram to be FREE for everyone, not just those who pledge. So that is why we are offering rewards associated with our personality. Things that are local, responsible, and crafted. Making a pledge will more closely connect you with us, so that we can connect the world to great content from the creative community.
Since Citygram will be a free publication there will be ads in the magazine - and we're offering ad spots as part of our Kickstarter campaign.
We think these will be ads you enjoy however, as they can offer extra utility for companies we think fit our "Local. Responsible. Crafted." ideals . We will create ads people may actually want to see and use..."What's on sale? Who's playing tonight at a music venue? What does the atmosphere and dishes from a local restaurant look like?" - as showcased in the video.
We can do this because we're the advertising designer, developer and publisher. We think that offers power and opportunity for people who normally wouldn't consider an ad in a magazine to give one in Citygram some consideration...in particular small local businesses, makers and artisans we support and believe in.
We would love for the world to see the great things these people make, for the maker to reach a new audience or gain a new customer directly on the page and to finally put these locally crafted goods in a space that has since now been exclusive to national companies.
In a word, "no." Citygram is a digital magazine that can be downloaded worldwide. Our contributors are Austin-based, and Austin-focused, but they write stories that we think anyone (from any city) would enjoy reading - just ask the followers they already have outside of Austin.
There's lots of interesting things happening in Austin. New trends and markets are being established here first, and you'll get a preview into that.
Hear the stories of successful small business owners.
See what's upcoming from the growing independent maker community.
Discover how those makers create their products (from jewelry to boots and more).
Peek at what people are actually wearing this season.
Find a great Gluten-Free recipe.
Even find out what it's like to use Google Fiber (Austin is Google's next destination for the gigabit internet offering).
Citygram is also focused on collaborating and working with popular bloggers from cities outside of Austin. People we admire and appreciate. People that are the best at what they do - like Joy the Baker from Los Angeles, CA.
Each issue you'll get to see what these talented individuals can create through exclusive, crafted pieces that fully utilize this new medium.
