We have a new color scheme! Rustic Metal. View our latest update.
The idea was created when one of our designers, Kyle, was looking to one-up one of his colleagues. In an effort to be original, Kyle married two seemingly opposite ideas—steampunk technology and paleontology. The steampunk dinosaur was born. We were all surprised how cool the steampunk dinosaur was and posted an image to our Facebook page. Our fans on social media agreed. Many asked where they could buy the dinos and how much they cost. One Facebooker was more aggressive, maybe even a little intimidating, writing, “shut up and take my money.”
While designing and printing steampunk dinosaurs wasn’t part of our business plan, we decided this would make an awesome project for our company to take on. And, we would like to keep our fans happy—and not so scary. :) However, as a new startup company, we don’t have the resources to design and print the steampunk dinosaur/dragon project. This is where you come in…
What started out as Kyle’s “fun-thing-to-do” has become much bigger. So far Kyle has designed and we have printed three dinosaurs: T-Rex, Triceratops, and Stegosaurus. We’ve also added two dragons to the family: Blue European and Hydra.
This is good, but Kyle has ideas for four more dinosaurs: Dimetrodon, Pachycephalosaurus, Apatosaurus, and Plesiosaurus. And five more dragons: Skeletal Dragon, Sea Serpent, Wyvern, Fairy Dragon, and Fire Drake. This would make a total of seven dinosaurs and seven dragons to complete the set.
The complete set of 14 is our goal. We would love to see this become a reality. But as a startup company, our resources are already stretched thin. We need your help to complete the project. Without the support of backers, the rest of the dinos and dragons won’t make it off the sketch pad.
And Kyle’s sketch pad continues to grow with dinosaur and dragon ideas. Should we make our initial goal with plenty of funding and backers to spare, we will move forward with more designs as part of a stretch goal.
It’s really quite simple:
Your funds will help increase our design resources. This will allow Kyle to work solely on steampunk dinosaurs and dragons until the project is complete.
Also, while we already have the printers, the materials are expensive. We will use the money to purchase enough materials for our 3D printers to fulfill the rewards for our Kickstarter backers
Each model will be made of one of two materials:
Your dinosaur or dragon will be made of either UV-cured resin or multi-color sandstone-like material. The dinosaurs and dragons are constructed in many layers using 3D-printing technology—also called additive manufacturing.
UV-cured resin is a translucent, hard material that is used in either our ProJet or Connex 3D printers. It starts as liquid and then is cured with ultra-violet light. UV-cured resin is very suitable for artistic designs and decorative pieces as it shows very fine details.
UV-cured resin is fairly resilient, but please, still be careful with your dinosaur or dragon.
Multi-Color Sandstone-Like Material
Full-color sandstone-like material is used in our Zprinter. As the name implies, the sandstone can be printed in full color. It has a rough, grainy surface and is hard and somewhat brittle. This material starts out as a powder and then is colored and hardened when a binder fluid and ink is precisely applied in many layers.
Your dinosaur or dragon model made of the sandstone-like material is fragile and should be a display-only item.
The sizes are approximate and dinosaur or dragon specific.

Risks and challenges
The risks for this project are low. WhiteClouds has several 3D printers to create the steampunk dinosaurs and dragons and in the event that one of the printers malfunctions or breaks down, we have more than one printer to take on the job. We are also able to repair the 3D printers ourselves and if the needed repairs are outside of our scope of expertise, we can contact the manufacturer.
Our designer, Kyle, will be creating the dinosaurs, and in the event of injury or death, we have his DNA on file to 3D print his clone, ready and willing to take on the design challenge.
Other risks may include delayed delivery dates in such cases where the demand is so great that it causes back orders. We have made arrangements with a premier shipping company to reduce delays and we will also be hiring a shipping expert to handle orders.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
