Ancient History Magazine is a new magazine from Karwansaray Publishers. Karwansaray is an independent publishing house in the Netherlands. We specialize in the publication of historical books and magazines for a large, interested and informed audience.
Our most well-known publication is Ancient Warfare, a bimonthly magazine on the military history of the ancient world. Ancient Warfare is currently in its ninth year and we are edging toward publication of the fiftieth issue, later this year. Four years ago, Ancient Warfare got a little brother: Medieval Warfare, which covers warfare in the period between ca. AD 500 and 1500. At the same time we also took over publication of Wargames, Soldiers & Strategy, and turned it into a very successful wargaming magazine.
About Ancient History Magazine
Ancient History Magazine - or AHM for short - will be similar to Ancient Warfare, except that it will explore the whole of the ancient world instead of focusing solely on military matters. Like our other magazines, an issue of AHM will be centered around a particular theme. But because the subject matter is so comprehensive, more room will be made available for non-theme-related articles, so that each issue will have something for everyone. We created a 10-page PDF issue for our readers to get an idea of what we're planning to do.
What sets our historical magazines apart from others in the market is that we strive to explore a topic in more depth than most other magazines. A combination of different articles, points of view and questions & answers guarantees a thorough, fascinating look into the subject matter that is more than a dry listing of facts.
Another distinguishing aspect of our magazines is that they avoid the use of Renaissance paintings or nineteenth-century etchings. Instead, our magazines use original photographs of artifacts and structures from the ancient world, and we commission artists to create original reconstructions of people, buildings, and events.
With Ancient History Magazine, we want to create the best magazine on the ancient world possible. Will you help us make it a reality?
What this Kickstarter is about
If this Kickstarter campaign reaches its funding goal, we will be able to produce one issue of Ancient History Magazine. This first issue will be centered on the theme of 'Discovery in the Ancient World', so expect articles on Hanno the Carthaginian, the ancient search for amber, exploration of the Indian Ocean, and more.
There will also be plenty of space for non-theme-related articles. We initially plan for a 68-page first issue to allow more space for more articles. This issue of Ancient History Magazine will have at least half a dozen original illustrations (reconstructions), a custom cover painted by one of our regular artists (Milek Jakubiec), plus maps, plans, lots of photographs and will be full-color throughout.
Starting a new magazine is an expensive proposition. Rather than start up a new magazine out of the blue, we want to test the waters, so to speak, and have therefore decided to do a Kickstarter campaign to fund a single issue of Ancient History Magazine.
Funding for this campaign will cover the costs of printing the issue and distributing it to our backers and to stores (approximately €5000 for 4000 copies), pay for our writers (approximately €3000) and artists (ca. €2000), and cover part of our in-house expenses (editorial team, layout and design, administrative costs).
Stretch goals are in place to cover expenses for a second issue of Ancient History Magazine. If there is enough interest, we will want to launch the magazine as a going concern, i.e. as a bimonthly magazine similar to our other magazines.
Risks and challenges
Starting a new magazine carries with it a certain risk. However, since we already publish three magazines, we think we have the know-how to ensure that the project gets off the ground without any problem.
If the Kickstarter is funded successfully, we will start assigning authors to write articles in the second half of April (we have even had a few proposals for articles submitted already, both theme-related and otherwise!). Likewise, we will assign illustrators almost immediately.
The issue is scheduled to go to print around the middle of October. It should return to us after about two weeks and then also be shipped to shops and backers. From experience, we know that meeting these deadlines should not be a problem.
However, it is of course possible for something to go wrong. An artist might get ill, an author might not deliver his article on time and, true, it might even happen that the printer does not do his job. Fortunately for our backers, in the past years, we've dealt with, and solved, most of these problems. We've been lucky in that no printer has ever let us down, but we do have alternatives if necessary. We are, in short, confident of our ability to create and publish this magazine.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
