New release date announcement! (With new development timeline + ways to get your refund)

Hello everyone! :)

As you might realize it already, it's nearing December 2017 already - which was the expected release date of Seiyuu Danshi. Yes, it "was" because unfortunately, I won't be able to meet that deadline. In this update, I will announce new release date, a new timeline which contains a new to-do-list, and ways to get your refund if you are not willing to wait any longer for the game to be released. So, without further ado, here's it! :)

--

First of all, I think it's necessary to let you guys know why I think the game ends up being not finished by the expected release date. There are three reasons that I think are the main factors causing it:

  • The game's a lot longer and bigger than I thought it would be. I planned to have a lot of scenes to make the game less boring (which is the drawbacks for most dating sims, too much stat raising without the actual story), but I didn't think it would be this much lol. Expected wordcount was only 150K words, but now the game's wordcount is already at 256K words and there are still some scenes that need to be written (in particular: 18+ scenes, calling scenes).
  • Most of the things to do can only be done by myself. I tend to do most of the game development aspect myself (writing, coding, GUIs, etc). I outsource only music, voices, and art (and even the art, I take some time to edit the sketches to make the faces resemble the character graphics). The reason for this is because in my own experience, delegating tasks to others can be as or even more time-consuming than doing them yourself because of the time it takes to edit them afterwards - especially in regards to writing, in which I tried commissioning a writer to help out writing a particular scene before, but it ended up being rather weird as the characters were saying things that are out of character. Seiyuu Danshi is a character-centric dating sim instead of a plot-centric one, so when the characters are behaving out of character, it will really ruin the immersion. Aside from that, finding a reliable person to work with is really really REALLY hard (I'm blessed enough to find dedicated artists that can finish commissioned art with little to no delay).
  • I'm only able to work on the game part-time for most of the development period. Unfortunately, for the period of Feb 2016 to about January 2017, I wasn't able to work on the game full-time, due to still being an active student in university (needs to attend classes Monday - Friday, mostly 8 AM to 4/5 PM). After January 2017, I was able to work on the game more compared to when I needed to attend classes everyday, but I still had to write my undergraduate thesis (Unnecessary info, but I'm having my uni graduation ceremony this December :D). Anyway, it was only after about August 2017 (after submitting the final thesis) that I was able to start working on the game full-time.

There are also many other reasons such as minor burn-out during some parts of the game development (which is pretty normal for any long creative projects), during which I just thought the game was really totally terrible and couldn't bear working on it lol... (though after being left some time, I started to think "Oh well, it's not that bad actually" lol),  but yeah, those three above are the main reasons I can think of.

IS THE GAME DOOMED NOW FOR ETERNITY NOW?

Nah. Even though we had a bit of money issue due to sudden tax being invoiced to us, we solved it not long after that thanks to the help of the game's supporters! (*hint* *hint* It's you ;)). Anyway, to sum it all up: the game is progressing just fine, it's just that the workload is more than I thought it would be, and I hope to have more time to work on it! c:

--

I'm hoping to release the beta version of the game by April 2018 (might be released per character route if some of the characters aren't finished yet). The beta version will be unvoiced and un/half-proofed. The full game release date (voiced and proofed) is scheduled to be on June 2018. For the new timeline of the game, please refer to the new Google Sheets. LINK: CLICK HERE.

Like before, a huge disclaimer that I might - yet again - overestimate myself and underestimate the workload... But, even though this is just a rough estimate that might change again, I would still like to give you guys a concrete release date and work hard to aim for that date! (I work better with a deadline in mind, somehow)

I DON'T WANT TO WAIT ANY LONGER! CAN I HAVE A REFUND OF MY MONEY?

Sure thing! I understand why some people might not be willing to wait any longer. To get your refund, please let me know via Kickstarter message (if you're backing us through Kickstarter) & e-mail: order.meyaoigames@gmail.com (if you're backing us through Paypal / pre-ordering through itch.io) with the subject "Refund: <amount you paid for>".

Final game will retail at $29.99 minimum (yes, there's chance I might increase the price more than that considering the amount of time I spend working on this game xD), and once you've refunded your money, there's no turning back to the price you originally paid for, so please keep that in mind! :)

Last but not least, here are some highlights of the things I got done these past two months! (there are too much unimportant updates, so I'll just recap the important ones lol)

WRITING PROGRESS

I've written around 50K+ words during these past two months. Current wordcount is 256K words, and steadily increasing! 300K final wordcount is the estimate currently, which is approx the same to a really really lengthy novel.

Output from Renpy lint
Output from Renpy lint

The reason the wordcount so high (most EVNs are at 100-150K wordcount, with the exception of some) is mainly because Seiyuu Danshi doesn't really have a lengthy common route (the generic writing part you get, no matter what characters you pursue). Aside from several small scenes, most of the other events are character-specific and will differ depending on which character you pursue. I think this makes it a lot more fun when replaying the game a second time because most scenes aren't scenes you've seen in your previous play through. However, at the same time it's really a pain to write lol (because for every scene I need to make at least 5 variations for each character :o).

Each guy gets their own christmas event + accompanying CG

Anyway, even though it might make the game's release pushed away, I don't really want to cut corner with the writing, as it is the part that makes the game fun to play in the first place (It's not really fun to just do stat raise with little scene rewards, is it? ;)).

ART PROGRESS

Most of the important art is done, really. I can even ship the game right now with the current art. However, I still have some money to spend + I'm still not done with my work list anyway. Instead of making the artists wait idly, I'll just commission them for additional artworks for the already written scenes that I think would be even better with an accompanying art. More pretty art never hurts anyway ;)

Additional clothes like ski attire & yukata are also finished!

ADDITIONAL NPC CHARAS

Also made some additional NPC charas that will show up in each of the guys's route~

DRESS UP & ADDITIONAL UNDERWEAR DONE

Before, only "funky" style clothing was inputted in-game. Finally revamped the code so that it's less buggy and inputs all the remaining clothing pieces!

Also finished inputting in additional underwears, there are even female lingeries to buy! (Might not be to everyone's taste, but there's an option to if you like that sort of thing c:)

It looks more like a costume instead of an underwear.. Oh well, at least we get some eyecandy

NEW PHONING IMAGES

The phoning images used to be face-shot with only 1 expression. I decided to ask artist to remake it as previous ones are kinda weird anatomically (I made it lol :p). Anyway, new phoning images have multiple expressions as well to make the phone conversation less boring~

MERCHANDISE PROGRESS

Received a sample for the finished T-shirt (yes, the Ponpon mouth is a Doraemon-like pocket!). Now we can all cosplay as Haato xD

Also, a rough sketch of Shuu's mousepad (design might be changed later tho, I'm still undecided whether to make the chest / ass bouncy :p)

Ass / chest? Which do you guys prefer?
Ass / chest? Which do you guys prefer?

As said in the beginning, there's high chance that only 1 (ONE) design will get made for the 3D mousepad due to high MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity) per design. So, once all rough sketches designs for the 3d mousepad are completed, I will make the poll to determine which design gets made~

Anyway, that's it for this update as it is long enough already! :p See you guys next month (+ I'll post an update when Kickstarter surveys are ready to be sent out).

Thanks for the continuing support for Seiyuu Danshi from the very beginning!

Have a good day~ ^_^

@Theresa Jakob: Thank you for the kind words. It means a lot! ^_^

@ Heon Jun Henry Park: No printed sample yet (because the vendor is overseas, and I'll need to print them when I know what exactly to order), but the design was actually already posted some updates ago xD (LINK: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/11313010/seiyuu-danshi-english-bl-yaoi-dating-sim-visual-no/posts/1796611) => scroll to dakimakura part!

@ Mark L: Thanks for the understanding, though I'm still feeling a little bit disappointed with myself for not being able to meet it x_X (I had hoped to do better...)

@ CJ: Thanks for the advice! C:
And yes, I sure hope I can find someone I trust enough to delegate jobs to someday *fingers crossed for that*. Though, it's really hard to find dedicated helpers, and some Kickstarter project actually failed to deliver because they relied too much on outside work. Those risks you mention are definitely plausible, but the risks of the helpers you contract suddenly ditching you is also plausible and I've had an experience with that... unfortunately. Even when I searched for artists, I managed to find several artists who were definitely skilled but took at least 1-2 months to finish only 1 art. Some went missing for months with no updates at all, etc (which is why I'm really blessed to find two dedicated artists now lol).

If possible, I would like to work with people in my local area someday - so that I can see them on weekdays and can ensure they're actually working on the project and give them the directions needed in effective manner. But that will take some time to do (not to mention, my country is still not as welcoming to LGBT yet), so yeah definitely not for this project, but something I hope to do in the future ;)

I'm going to agree with everyone and say that I don't mind waiting for the final product.

      However -

I think that you really need to learn from this experience going forward and when thinking about your next project. The fact that so much of this is based on you and isn't delegated is a recipe for burnout and very potential disaster. I've seen it happen to many times where a creator thinks that a project will go off without a hitch and then they don't realize that if one small thing happens to them that the ENTIRE project is jeopardy. They don't think about what will happen if they get into an accident, if a close family member dies, if they're diagnosed with a terrible illness, if their significant other breaks up with them, if their spouse demands a divorce and it gets ugly - if your hands are in all the pots then dinner doesn't get on the table without you. I think on your next project you need to be in a place where delegation CAN easily take place. Please consider it.

Thanks for the update. As I've mentioned in other video game Kickstarters I've been involved in, I mentally add a year or two to the creator's initial estimate, having learned from much Kickstarter experience that it *always* takes much longer than creators anticipate. I understand that these things take time, and would prefer a good, late game to a crappy on-time game. If Christmas 2018 comes and goes and we still haven't got to the beta stage, I might begin to worry. Until then, just keep moving forward, and I'll trust that you'll get there eventually. ;-)

      WAIT WHAT ABOUT DAKIMAKURA???????????

I have the utmost respect for you. You're working so hard to make this game everything you want it to be. You're working to make it not repetitive and be new and fun with every replay, and if that means I have to wait several more months, I'm perfectly fine with that as a backer.

I think a lot of the backers will understand that backing a project can mean more waiting, especially with all the stretch goals you offered, my goodness. Lots of scenes to look forward to. Supporting a kickstarter isn't the same as just buying a game which is already finished.

Love everything you're showing us here. The NPCs are so cute. Love the new phonecall images, and glad to know we'll get some facial reactions.

EXCITED with how the shirt looks, I made sure to get me one of those.

darn! Oh well I will just hope for the future! XD

    8. meyaoigames Creator on November 27

@ Tyo: The mousepads were available as physical add-ons during Kickstarter (it wasn't in the rewards list so that might be why you missed it :D). Might be sold later on (after game's released, of course) xD

    9. Tyo on November 27

While I'm super super hyped for the release of this game, I'm 100% fine and happy to wait~ rushing a game simply doesn't work. The longer it takes the more complete and polished it will be!

On a side note, I haven't been keeping up 100% with updates. That mouse pad is amazing D: was that a kickstarter bonus only that I didn't notice or can we actually buy those? If so where? I need it! XD

    10. meyaoigames Creator on November 27

@ Tom van der Spek: Thanks for the kind words :D

      Also, additional note regarding refunds (I'm a forgetful person, I'm sorry ~_~), the amount refunded will be a full payment amount minus Kickstarter and payment processing fees (which is 8%). Thank you for the understanding ^_^;

A refund??? While this game every week becomes bigger, more beautiful and last but not least more sexier? No way!
Keep going! You are doing a great job! I simply wait until you think it is finished.
      Greetings!
