As a seasoned chess player I often wondered; why in a world of strategy games did I rarely come across people playing chess any more? After much research I found that many people no longer played chess due to time constraints, or because they were tired of losing to seasoned players. I set out with the goal of getting people to dust off their old chessboards and get back to enjoying such a wonderful game. To do this I needed to create a way to not only shorten the game of chess but to add an element of chance to the game to level the playing fields when it came to intermediate and novice players. My solution to this goal came in the form of a deck of customized playing cards.
We made 100% and that is thanks to each and every one of you! To show our appreciation we are announcing our first stretch goal!
If we can make $3500, all of our backers that backed at the Knight level will receive the Wyrd Sisters card shipped with their deck.
If we make $4000, all of our backers at the Bishop level will receive a second copy of the game signed by the creator and Illustrator as well as a second Wyrd Sister card to go with it.
Beguile is a deck of 52 cards that played in conjunction with a standard chess set opens up new possibilities and sense of humor to an already masterful game.
The deck is divided into 2 styles of cards:
- Cards marked with a T are quite powerful and are often played as the turn instead of moving a piece on the board.
- C cards are played in conjunction with a piece being moved but will result in a piece or pieces moving abnormally.
Players are dealt 5 cards each face down and players can either make a standard chess move or can play a card. The final goal of the game is the same as a standard chess game where players need to place their opponent’s King in checkmate. The cards not only change up the strategy of chess and introduce an element of chance, but can also be used to make the game play much faster. On average a game lasts approximately 40 minutes.
We have had both males and females from ages 7 to 70 play Beguile, all of whom have enjoyed both the humor and deviousness of the cards as well as the unexpected results from playing them. Little to no chess experience is required to play Beguile. Player’s only need to know how each of the pieces is able to move and what constitutes a checkmate or in some cases a stalemate.
Here is a quick tutorial video:
Here are just a few images of the card artwork. Each card is different and many have been designed to pay homage to film and literature in a humorous way. These are full-bleed images which means the artwork will go right to the edge of the cards without the need of an unsightly solid boarder. Quality was of utmost importance so the final decks will be 300gsm blue core playing card stock with a luxurious linen finish. We are also looking to have the tuck box with the linen finish as well.
Supporters that pledge at the Knight level and above will be receiving a finished copy of Beguile in the full colour tuck box:
(The image above is of one of the first prototypes sent out for beta testing and does not fully reflect the final products linen finish)
Supports of the Queen Levels and above will receive this T-Shirt:
The King and Emperor supporters will also receive the Grey Armor Hoodie with the Beguile Logo on it.
The Black Knight supporters will receive a black version reserved for them only. We will do our best to have the logo positioned where the supporter would prefer for that ultimate customized look.
Creating a game that would bring people together has been a dream of mine and Beguile has been quite a journey. So many people have gotten involved helping with the editing, testing, and overall words of encouragement that not only is seeing this game to completion a personal goal it has now become a way of saying thank you to all those involved. Getting funding through Kickstarter is not only a way of sharing the moment with everyone but it also means that Beguile will get produced in larger quantities which means the quality I was hoping to offer can be achieved. Art, prototypes, and promotion come at a cost and your backing can make all the difference in assuring its production.
Although this is my first game creation, I do have several more game concepts in the works. Not only is your support appreciated here, but Kickstarter backers will have the opportunity to weigh in and possibly play test future games as a special thanks to the new-found members of our community.
