A House To Call Our House is the newest performance collaboration between multidisciplinary artists and performers Julia Calabrese and Layla Marcelle Mrozowski. It’s premiering in January at the Fertile Ground Festival in Portland, Oregon, and we need your help to make it happen!
has been creating visual art in her Portland studio for the last 4
years. Her work ranges from mixed media sculpture to watercolor
painting and now textile and pattern design. All the while she has been
training in dance and performing for various artists in Portland, as
well as visiting choreographers through the Time Based Art Festival.
Layla has spent the past couple of years studying contemporary dance and working in Amsterdam and Brussels. In 2010 Layla founded BAAD Kinetics <Bicycle Awesome Adventure Dance>, organizing a raucous pedal-powered dance tour called HOT MESS. Julia and Layla co-choreographed a duet created for the tour called Permesso that was performed surreptitiously at MASS MoCA, as an opener for pop veterans Mates of State and in Katherine Driscoll’s backyard in Brooklyn, among other unlikely and magical spaces.
The initial idea for A House To Call Our House came about during a conversation last spring when we were working on a music video project and the ball’s been rolling since then. Through emails, skype dates and google docs, we have been developing the conceptual aspects and logistic of the project. Julia has been hard at work in her studio building sets and objects in time for Layla’s arrival in January.
A House To Call Our House is a piece exploring the nature of reality in an imagined 5th dimension: a kaleidoscope of images, dancing bodies, banners, houseplants, and infinite gyrating. This choreography of bodies and objects combines elements of dance, theater, and sculpture to create a living installation.
scale of this piece marks our most ambitious collaboration to date. We
are totally thrilled but we can’t do it without our support! The money
from kickstarter will go directly to the material and set costs,
rehearsal space, performance space, festival fees and many other costs
associated with the production.
Please help at whatever level you can and spread the word!

Risks and challenges
We’ve used video and objects in former pieces, but never on this scale. The work is therefore both logistically and artistically challenging, but we are pumped to take on the risks. Officially a work in progress, our premiere is essentially a first draft. The challenge we face after the festival is getting this baby out of Portland! We will need time and space to further develop the piece and places to show it. That means writing applications and getting residencies and performance opportunities. This really is just the beginning, and we are very grateful for any support you give. We wouldn’t be able to do it without you!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
