Your support will help to fund student workshops and building costs as we design and build TECHSTYLE HAUS, a joint entry from Brown University, the Rhode Island School of Design, and the University for Applied Sciences in Erfurt, Germany to the Solar Decathlon Europe 2014 competition.
/////////////// THE COMPETITION
VERSAILLES, FRANCE. In July 2014, twenty teams will compete in the Solar Decathlon Europe, a competition that challenges collegiate teams from around the world to design and build a home that is powered exclusively by solar energy and that utilizes innovative energy technology and sustainable architecture. The original Solar Decathlon was hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy in 2002 and its European counterpart was established in 2010. The 2014 competition will be hosted in Versailles, France, adjacent to the gardens of the Chateau de Versailles, and will be attended by teams from sixteen different countries and four continents. The houses are judged in ten categories:

- Communications & Social Awareness
- Urban Design, Transportation & Affordability

/////////////// TECHSTYLE HAUS
THE FIRST OF ITS KIND. TECHSTYLE HAUS will combine advanced passive architecture with an innovative housing 'shell' composed of lightweight and flexible high-performance textiles. The result will be a home that is affordable and easy to prefabricate, transport, and construct.
PASSIVHAUS. We will be using our expertise with Passivhaus, the highest international standard for energy efficiency, to achieve a steady-state building environment that reduces space heating and cooling energy needs by up to 90%. The home's walls and roof will be constructed from “smart” membranes and performance textiles that will passively react to variations in the atmosphere and help to manage energy flows.
A SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLE. TECHSTYLE HAUS will encourage its occupants to engage in healthy and sustainable living habits through compelling, positive feedback responses and an emphasis on living in a playful way. The interior of the house will be designed with moveable walls and partitions to enable users to transform spaces to fit varying short-term needs. The house will adapt and respond to lifestyle and environmental changes while providing for the demands of modern life. TECHSTYLE HAUS will be designed with attention to the landscape and the community around it, with opportunity for modular combination into multi-unit complexes and neighborhoods.
READY TO LAUNCH. By incorporating modern technologies into architectural framework, we will create an innovative and aesthetically pleasing home out of textiles. TECHSTYLE HAUS will be a beautiful, affordable, lightweight, easily deployable, super-insulated solar home, which will set a standard for the next generation of residential architecture.
/////////////// OUR TEAM
OVER 200 STUDENTS FROM THREE SCHOOLS. We are an international team of students from three distinctly different universities: Brown University, the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), and the University of Applied Sciences in Erfurt (FHE). Each school is a global leader in its respective field: Brown brings expertise in engineering, environmental science, and urban studies; RISD is world renowned for their Art and Design disciplines, and FHE specializes in Passivhaus systems and design. Multiple courses, workshops, and student committees dedicated to TECHSTYLE HAUS have been implemented at each university. These shared efforts involve over 200 students and faculty from many different divisions including: Architecture, Engineering, Landscape, Interior Design, Furniture, Industrial Design, Graphic Design and Environmental Studies. Several design workshops that have taken place over the past year have proven the success of this inter-institutional partnership.

Risks and challenges
Funding TECHSTYLE HAUS will be exceedingly difficult, and this campaign is one of many ways we plan to gather sponsorship.
