It is that time again. Another chapter of life, another bunch of songs, another album! This will be my 5th album since I released “This Frontier Needs Heroes” with my sister Jessica in 2009. In the ten years since then I have been all over the world playing songs for people like you. It is challenging, it is humbling. Last year I did my first tour of Canada, played above the arctic circle in Norway, and even played concerts in Tunisia and Colombia! Everything I do has a global perspective because we need to bring all people around the world together. For those of you have been following my journey the last ten years I feel grateful and lucky. Not everybody gets to do what I do. I have friends all over the world who care about me.
This is where you come in, because I can not do this without you. I have self-released 4 albums and this will be my 5th. No label, no manager, sometimes no idea what I was doing, but I just somehow figured it out. Hours of emails and research. Lots of driving. Although now I do have some booking agents in Europe. The process of songwriting is something I do myself, but recording is something I feel is best left to the professionals. Previously we have done two successful kickstarter campaigns. After not doing one last time I realized that was a big mistake. I need to partner with you to make this happen. Asking for help is sometimes the hardest thing to do. I am definitely DIY that is just how I am wired, and how I have been able to accomplish everything I have so far, but not without you, DIWY! Do it with you!
The release of my last album “Real Job” was one of the most challenging experiences of my life for many reasons. I had to learn to do everything myself. I had to pay for everything myself, I had to make my own music videos. It was a harrowing experience, but I learned a lot! It was also one of the most memorable where I wrote most of the songs at the Stetson Kennedy Songwriter Residency in Fruit Cove, FL where Woody Guthrie wrote over 80 songs! This inspiring location and the tumultuous times before the 2016 election inspired me to write some of my favorite songs. Now that residency is open for other songwriters to enjoy. This is important to me that although I am forging my own path I want to leave something beautiful behind to help others to create. This is the reason why we all do this!
I got to bring these stories from America to new places. I was on tour in Italy, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway for the first time, and played shows in Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia. I played festivals like Folk Alliance International and the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival. I even moved to Nashville, TN after living in Florida to be part of the songwriting community. It was great to go out every night and see the best songwriters slinging their songs. Most of these new songs were inspired by and written in Nashville and played there for the first time.
This new group of songs comes out of this new phase of my life. They are different from "Real Job" a little less political, although I will have some for sure, they have some new perspectives looking back at my whole life. As of right now I have 11 songs I want to record and a tentative title "Go with the Flow." Usually the way I write only 8 can fit on a vinyl record so we will have some secret tracks. I am writing to you now from Barcelona where I am staring out a balcony polishing the final lyrics including a song about Leonard Cohen.
This summer, I am planning a massive Canada tour thanks to Side Door a great new artist tool that helps books house concerts and alternative venues. I am playing a festival in South Dakota and Sweden with a European tour to follow which will be happening in the fall...
So what is the money for? Recording, Mixing, Mastering, Musicians, Artwork, Cds, Vinyl. Once the album is complete there is PR, tour support and other creative stuff like videos. As an independent artist I have to do everything a label would do or hire someone. I promise you that I will always work with the best people at the best price no room for waste. After spending all of my own money on the last album I have a true appreciation of how every dollar will be spent. I take this very seriously never compromise the final product for price.
Here is the exciting part I am going to be working with my friend Johnny Irion as producer!
Johnny Irion is a rocker in and out of time. There’s something kind of timeless in the way he wrings out the sweetest melodies and deeper passions of both ‘60s Californian rock and Guthrie-era folk, and something so timely about the way he does it – there’s a reason Bernie Sanders asked him to sing at a rally in his sometimes-home of Santa Barbara.
Best known for his folk explorations with his wife Sarah Lee Guthrie, including their recent Wassaic Way produced by Jeff Tweedy, and his latest rock venture with US ELEVATOR, which Will Hermes of Rolling Stone Magazine praised for its “songs that are hand crafted as lovingly as the jeans on the back of After the Goldrush,” Irion has earned a reputation as one of the most exciting artists across the folk-rock spectrum, from his uncannily Young-Nilsson-esque voice to his melodic and lyrical mettle. Irion has recently released a solo record, Driving Friend, with members of Dawes, Wilco, and Nicki Bluhm.
So I am very excited about these new songs, and working together with Johnny! I am going to keep the rewards simple. Vinyl, CDs, Tshirts, Postcards, Stickers and House Concerts. If you think of something that you would want from me don’t be afraid to suggest something! I am sure someone else is thinking the same thing. I look forward to this being the most epic and inspiring album I have ever made, and I hope you will be a part of this journey.

Risks and challenges
Since I am an independent artist I need all the help I can get! I need every share, every stream, every house concert, every album purchased to make it happen. We all know how challenging the musicians life is, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. There are some other mind boggling things in the works, but I just want to let you know for now that I am working as hard as I can and I have a very global perspective!
