About this project
We're two righteous dudes who need your help in designing & developing the world's best RFID wallet!
Uncrate: "... you haven't seen many RFID-blocking cash carriers featured here — they're generally just too damn big, never mind any potential style flaws. The HuMn Wallet ($50 and up) solves this problem.."
GearHungry: "...the HuMn wallet is tough to beat in terms of minimalism."
BailingBucket:“I’ve needed a new, minimal wallet. Pledged.”
Lifehacker: "Although plenty of RFID-blocking wallets exist, none are quite as thin and pocketable as the HuMn.”
Why humans need a better wallet...
The HuMn Wallet was born out of necessity and lots of traveling. Being two dudes on the go, we’ve tried almost every type of wallet, money clip, card case, and wallet mutation out there. We were looking for a way to keep what we needed in our wallets, while getting rid of the things we didn’t. Sounds simple enough right? Wrong.
Some card cases could hold cash and cards, but couldn’t hold business cards. Some could handle cash and business cards, but stored them on top of each other, which meant that you had to pull out all of your cards to find the one you were looking for. Others simply could only hold a fixed number of cards and cash.
All of the wallets we tried had a common problem, while they might start out "looking" slim, they would take on the usual bloated appearance once we put our cards and cash in them. It didn't matter if it was cheap or expensive ,they all fell short in one way or another. To make things worse, almost all of the wallets out there didn't even protect against RFID skimming.
Redundancy up the Yin Yang...
Most people don't wear suspenders and a belt at the same time, because it looks silly and more importantly, it's a bit redundant. Yet that's exactly what quite a few of our friends do when carrying credit cards and money. We have friends who carry a card case and a wallet, or a money clip and a wallet, or a credit card case, a business card case, and... (wait for it)... a wallet. With smartphones capable of storing pictures, contacts, and holding information, it seems the fate of most wallets is to become a graveyard for old receipts more than anything else.
So here's the rub...
We wanted a wallet that:
- is lightweight
- protects against RFID skimming
- adapts to the user, not the user having to adapt to it
- works for right and left handed people
- is low profile
- is minimally designed
- can handle any climate and environment
- will never wear out
- allows easy access to cash, credit and business cards
- wouldn't turn into just another portable receipt holder
- wouldn’t be limited to a fixed number of cards you could carry
It had to do all these things and still have a design that was minimal and looked amazing!
Humans deserve a better quality wallet...
We’ve spent the last 11 months obsessing over this project to get it just right. Through endless tinkering with different types of materials and dimensions we’ve been able to distill what we believe a modern wallet should be.
From the steel fastener and super durable flat elastic shock strap we're using to secure the plates together; to incorporating an expanded aluminum mesh that blocks radio frequency signals in our carbon fiber plates, it was important to us to make sure that we were putting in your hands the most ergonomic and cleanest looking wallet you've ever laid your eyes on.
Who is the HuMn Wallet for?
The HuMn Wallet oozes a level of cool and awesomeness that crosses genders and age groups.
The HuMn Wallet is lightweight, secure, slim, and designed to go where you go. Put it in your front pocket, slip it into your purse, or clip it onto your backpack. Our wallet is perfect in any situation from the beach, to bar, to the boardroom.
We thought long and hard about what we would want in a modern, ultra slim wallet. It had to be adaptable to any situation and environment, securely hold the items you placed in it and protect them at all times. It had to be made out of a material that you could wipe down if it got wet without having to wait for it to dry. It had to have as little stitching as possible, because that's where most wallets start to fail - at the seams. It had to allow for easy access and let us see all of our cards at a quick glance, without having to pull all of them out to find the right one, and the design still had to look amazing.
After many tests and prototypes we've arrived. Whether you’re out for a run, at the beach, at work, or traveling, The HuMn Wallet does what a modern day wallet should do while exuding that rare kind of cool that makes it suitable and awesome in any situation.
The HuMn wallet protects your credit cards and ID's from being scanned unless you want them to be.
It's freaky knowing that someone can go online and purchase an RFID scanner for less than $100 and with a little computer savvy, start pulling information off of RFID embedded credit cards and ID's (also known as skimming) without ever having to physically touch a single wallet or purse - and the victim wouldn't even know that it had happened until much later.
While credit card companies are adamant that “their” cards cannot be hacked (and they’d never lie right?), there have been real life instances of skimming theft. The Discovery channel’s Mythbusters learned very quickly that the major credit card companies do not want people to know about the possible security issues with RFID chips.
With around 200 million credit cards in circulation that have RFID chips embedded into them, and that number expected to grow in the coming years, it's amazing that the majority of wallets on the market have not addressed this issue and are unable to protect against RFID skimming.
Even if you don't have an RFID credit card, the technology is finding its way into driver's licenses and ID's. New York, Michigan, Washington, and Vermont are just some of the states that currently issue enhanced driver’s licenses (EDL’s), while Minnesota, North Dakota, Idaho, New Hampshire, Maine, Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico are expected to start issuing EDL’s in the near future. Canada offers EDL’s in British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec; and last year Germany began issuing RFID embedded ID cards.
FWS (fat wallet syndrome):
Yes it’s a real thing. That big bulky wallet protruding out of your back pocket is the likely culprit. Officially called Piriformis syndrome, it’s a condition that can be caused or aggravated by sitting with a large wallet in the rear pocket and can lead to some pretty hefty medical bills.
This is why we designed The HuMn Wallet be front pocket wallet. Keeping your wallet in your front pocket is better for your back and also a more secure way to carry your wallet.
6061 Aluminum (AL):
We decided on using aircraft grade aluminum because it’s light in weight, 100% recyclable, super strong, and naturally blocks radio frequency signals.
3K Twill Carbon Fiber (C):
For our premium HuMn Wallet, we knew that carbon fiber was the only real choice. It’s used in high end performance cars, airplanes, and boats for its unsurpassed strength and minimal weight. In addition it looks ridiculously awesome!
Our carbon fiber wallets will have two plies of expanded foil, sandwiched between the carbon fiber layers to block RFID signals. The expanded foil we are using is used in commercial aircrafts to shield against electro-magnetic interference (EMI), radio frequency interference (RFI), microwave, and electro-static discharge (ESD).
Made in the US:
With a world class manufacturing base in the Pacific Northwest, that's renowned for its craftsmanship and quality, why go overseas to produce something that we can do right in our own backyard? We're working with local manufacturers from the fabrication of the plates, anodizing and metal finishing, to the laser engraving. By supporting us, you're also supporting American manufacturing.
Kickstarter and where you come in:
We have our final design finished and our manufacturers and suppliers lined up and ready to go. We have already covered the initial tooling and material costs. However, we need your help in meeting the minimum order quantities (MOQ’s) required by the manufacturers to go into production. Your pledge will help us get the first run of HuMn Wallets made!
We need at least 1,000 orders to get our project off the ground, which translates into $66,000 – our funding goal. Please know that Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing system; meaning if we are unable to meet our funding goal, no money will be collected.
So please back our project. If you are unable to back our project, please help us in getting the word out to your friends and network – we’ll give you mad love and you’ll have the satisfaction in knowing that you played a vital role in starting the HuMn revolution!
We are offering 8 superlicious reward levels!
In addition, if you refer two people that back our project at the Rover level or higher, you will receive a free HuMn anodized Aluminum Wallet in your choice of color with a microfiber bag! Make sure that the two people you refer who back our project mention you by name on the comments page!
Thank you for checking us out and we hope you'll back our project! If you are unable to back us, please help us by spreading the word and follow us on Facebook!
