Transport Knister by bike
Extend it to double its size
Extend Knister to a larger grill size. Leave the BBQ small if you grill with 2-3 friends and extend it when you have a BBQ with 8-9 friends. Knister fits every situation perfectly - no matter how big your group is. During the transport by bike, the two sliders are held together by the stainless steel grill rack.
Fits all common handlebars
Knister fits all common handlebars - no matter whether if you have a city-, mountain- or racing bike. Just put the non-permanent attachment on your handlebars and slide in the BBQ from the top. It just takes a few seconds. You adjust the length of the attachment with two thumbscrews, and you only need to to this once when you use it for the first time. Our promise: Knister will fit your bike 100% and it never restricts you during the ride.
Store food inside during the transport
Easy to carry: Use it even when you don’t go by bike
Of course you can use Knister even when you don’t cycle. Just carry the BBQ like a normal basket if you use public transport or the car to get to the beach, lake or park. The whole mechanism is not permanent: Neither the attachment to the BBQ nor the attachment to your bike, just remove it if you don’t need it anymore.
Easy to clean
Just put the grill into the dishwasher, as it is dishwasher proof. At the moment, we spent a lot of time time to find the perfect coating that you can put the whole BBQ into the dishwasher.
Grill rack: Two zones optimized for small food
The grill has two zones, one is ideal for normal steaks and the other one is optimized for smaller food like bacon, cherry tomatoes, zucchini pieces, onions and so on. Nothing will fall through the grill anymore!
Easy to set up
The legs are also the handles - Just flip them over.
In every Knister Grill you buy here on Kickstarter, one coal pack is included. It fits perfectly inside the grill and contains enough coal for the extended version. The package is made of special recycled cardboard. Just coil it up, put it in the middle of the charcoal and light it. The stack-effect will inflame the coal and you can say good-bye to chemical charcoal lighters. Starting July, you can buy our coal-packages on our online shop.
On your way home - with a safely closed grill
As soon as you dispose of the charcoal, the BBQ cools down within four minutes and is ready to be attached to the handlebars again. Don’t worry about dust or coal remains that could fly out because of the wind: The two grills slide over each other and that way the BBQ is closed.
Known & supported from
It's obvious, but we just wanted to make sure that you can't grill during you ride the bike. Yes, it's pretty dangerous to ride on public streets with hot charcoal on your bike. So please get rid of the hot coal before you mount it again to your bike - it takes around 3 minutes until the BBQ is cold and ready for transportation again.
Knister Grill is made in Germany and Poland. For us, it is really important that we can guarantee short transport distances by using local manufacturing. We also ensure a high quality product that you can use for decades. The product is designed using as little material and energy during the manufacturing as possible. You can also recycle it completely because all the components can be separated from each other. We deliver the perfect solution against disposable instant grills - and that’s our and your contribution to protect the environment.
The bottle opener card
Thanks for supporting us! This is our little present for you to say "Thank you". We produce it out of the offcuts from our grill production. So, you help us that we mustn't throw away material and Knister Grill gets more environmentally friendly.
The story of Knister Grill
I first had the idea for a BBQ transportable bike in July 2015 and developed it further during my Erasmus semester in Denmark in 2017. In November 2017, I participated in the competition „startup-weekend” and won together with two other friends. Then, Justus joined the team – we both were neighbours in our student dorm in Denmark, spent every minute together and became very close friends (in the picture you see us in November 2017 working on paper prototypes in Odense). Today, three other really good friends support me and the project and spend every free minute they have to realize Knister Grill. Without their amazing support, Knister wouldn't be where it is today.
- July 2015: I developed the first heavy prototype during my industrial design studies (back then it was mounted on the bike rack)
- November 2017: We won the Startup-Weekend in Odense, Denmark during my Erasmus semester
- December 2017: First wooden prototypes & sketches, develop the product again from scratch
- January 2018: First working prototype I built on my own, we named it “Knister Grill”
- January-February 2018: Intense engineering and optimization
- March 2018: First working prototype from our supplier, Knister is now transportable by bike
- March – April 2018: Intense optimization from details, coating and handling
- May 2018: Final Prototype from our supplier, making tooling for manufacturing
- 17th May 2018: Knister Grill is on Kickstarter
- May-June: Make the packaging design and finalize details
- July 2018: Shipment
Risks and challenges
The successful funding on Kickstarter will be used to finance the first production and to scale up. We already tested many prototypes and continually develop the product. We already got our manufacturers and now we just work on small details.
I’m an industrial designer and my mission is to only develop the best, safest and highest quality products. One challenge is to create products that last for several years without being able to test it for several years. We do many long-term tests and the grill conforms to German safety and DIN standards.
We are on time and you will receive the BBQ around July. We promise to get you a perfect product and we’ll ship it when its 120% fitting to our self-imposed quality pledge.
