While styles have come and gone, the button up dress shirt has remained a staple in wardrobes throughout time and around the world—largely due to its unmatched functionality and appeal. However, the original design was created using men’s bodies as a template, and since its inception, women have had to adapt to the stiff and unappealing look of button ups that weren’t designed with their bodies in mind.
We struggled to find shirts that ticked the boxes on our checklist—fit well, made us look and feel like a cool million, and didn’t break the bank—then it hit us. Women’s tops just weren’t getting the attention they deserved.
Enter Poplinen: a direct-to-consumer online destination devoted to offering better fitting, effortlessly cool shirts and tops that take women’s bodies into account. Poplinen tops and blouses are created for women, by women, and are designed to solve the problem of poor fits and silhouettes, too-high price tags, and the worst issue of all—boob gap. We want to give women what they want: a line of shirts made just for them.
Our goal isn't to create just another clothing line. We're committed to creating a thoughtfully designed and specialized women's shirting company, all while minimizing our carbon footprint, and adding good into the world. We work with experienced industry professionals in order to make products that are ethical, quality made, stylish, and accessible. Keeping our resources local at this time allows us to be hands on and work extremely close with our partners during the entire process.
And because we believe in women supporting other women, a percentage of our shirt sales will go to our non-profit partner, Step Up Network, a non-profit that propels girls from under-resourced communities to fulfill their potential by empowering them to become confident, college-bound, career-focused, and ready to join the next generation of professional women. They're funding educational programs for teenage girls—a.k.a. the future female leaders of America, and that is something we can definitely get behind.
Poplinen has designed each shirt with different lifestyles in mind, to fit everyday womens’ complex, contemporary lives—work weeks are busy, schedules slammed, and personal lives need to be lived. Poplinen is as versatile as these lifestyles: obsessing over details and ensuring each new design carries enduring, functional style that easily transitions from work, to side hustle dinner meetings, to drinks with friends.
Currently, the Poplinen line includes five unique shirt styles: Leilani Hawaiian Short Sleeve, Hutton Linen Long Sleeve, June Linen Crop Top, Billie Linen Tank, and Diana Poplin Short Sleeve.
Each top is made of either eco fabrics (viscose), vintage, or deadstock materials, and ethically made in downtown Los Angeles. As we grow, the team is 100% committed to holding ourselves to higher ethical standards of quality, craftsmanship, and sustainability throughout our supply chain.
We do this by working with factories that create a quality environment for it's workers, investing in our local communities, going green in our workspaces, and continually researching and implementing more sustainable fabrics into our collection.

Hi, I’m Desiree Buchanan, founder of Poplinen!
After five years of living in New York City, cutting my teeth at Condé Nast and Warby Parker, I moved back to Los Angeles in 2013 and landed at another startup, The Black Tux. During this time, the idea of making better fitting women's shirts started to take shape for me.
For the last couple of years, I’ve been working to create Poplinen. I like exploring the possibilities of helping women feel confident in what they’re wearing, all while empowering others through social good initiatives.
I am especially proud to put Poplinen out in the world thanks to an incredibly talented community of women and men who have teamed up with me along the way. I am beyond grateful, and would be thrilled for YOU to be a part of it!
I am coming to Kickstarter for this campaign because I believe in the power of people rallying for a project and person they care about. There is something profound that happens when you ask others for help. I believe it's incredibly powerful to be a part of something bigger than oneself and experience the ripple effect that can be caused by a group of individuals pushing an idea out into the world.
Our factories are lined up and ready to go so we can deliver on our promise of better quality shirts for women everywhere! We're currently making everything in small batches in Downtown LA, so we can scale thoughtfully and ensure quality control as we develop our styles and fits.
I am sharing Poplinen with my community in order to rid the world of ill-fitting, poor quality women’s shirts, and I need you! Please join us, and share the Poplinen story.
