UPDATE: Willie Nelson has agreed to sign SEVEN limited edition High From Texas water tower posters!

We've updated our page to include this new reward, so give it a look! Thank you!

High From Texas — A comedic web-series.

Five years in the future, America is a radically different place. The dust is finally settling from the net neutrality riots, Roomba makes sex robots and oh ya, the federal prohibition on marijuana has finally ended!

This giant leap forward didn’t happen without a great tragedy. It was only after the shocking death of Willie Nelson on April 20th, 2020 that congress came together and unanimously ended the ban on cannabis.

Willie Nelson a hero after sacrificing self to foil terror plot.
Willie Nelson a hero after sacrificing self to foil terror plot.

Congress's decision held extra meaning for the residents of Willie’s home state of Texas, where we meet Misty and Chet Davis, a madly in love couple from the small town of Big River. The Davises are like any other Texan, they respect guns, watch football, and of course love Beyoncé. But one thing makes them unique: They possess the first license to sell marijuana in Texas!

Welcome to Big River in Freedom County, 18 feet above sea level, but still the highest town in Texas. Yee-haw!

Concept

In our show's reality, weed is now legal and folks are trying to figure it out. Exploring this new reality is the crux of the show. Crew cut cops, people of faith, oil field workers, hunters — how do all these different Texans deal with the legalization of something that for so long they believed was terrible?

Now this show is first and foremost an over-the-top comedy filled with sight gags, weed jokes and big characters, but we do try to slip some thematic elements in here and there. The primary message we are trying to convey is this: The good that comes from ending cannabis prohibition far outweighs the bad, and the only people who are truly against ending it are those who profit from marijuana's illicit status.

In our story the character of Manuel Marco and his family are the primary vessels that we use to deliver this message. Manuel is a lifelong black market drug dealer who is diametrically opposed to marijuana legalization.  He is the perfect example of the type of person that benefits from keeping pot illegal.

We love 90's movies that made heavy-handed attempts at humanizing drugs dealers. So with our drug dealing family we took it even further! Think violent torture scene followed by a pretty princess themed tea party.

Hey, but if we are being honest, our favorite part of show is all the things we came up with answering the question, "What happened between 2018 and 2023?"...

Tone & Approach

The portions of High From Texas that feature the Davises and their employees will be shot The Office/Christopher Guest mockumentary style using shoulder-mounts and direct to camera confessionals. In contrast, the scenes involving the lovey-dovey, drug dealing Marco family will be filmed in a more cinematic capacity. The camera will move deliberately to better heighten the juxtaposition between the acts of horrific violence and moments of obnoxious family fellowship routinely exhibited by the Marcos.

The goal is to create a slightly grounded, rambunctious character-based ensemble comedy that appeals to more than just potheads and Texans. High From Texas will resonate with fans of King of the Hill, Arrested Development and Bad Boys II equally.  Every character and situation is designed so no punches get pulled and the show moves at a steady rhythmic pace, where the audience can remain engaged without every line being one "zinger" after another. We believe High from Texas, like marijuana and the lone star state, is for just about everyone.

Character Bios

Misty Davis owner of the first pot store in Texas

Portrayed by Haley Alea-Erickson
Portrayed by Haley Alea-Erickson

I’m not gonna lie ya’ll, Mrs. Davis, always peppy and positive, is a highly-motivated, modern southern belle. Misty kicks butt at everything she does, which can include anything from promoting voter turn out to Tim McGraw Krav Maga! Misty’s thick east Texas accent isn’t heavy enough to disguise her intelligence and poise. She is the driving force behind her family’s success and is a well-respected member of the Texas business community. Misty truly loves her husband, Chet and finds his empathy and constant cheerleading charming and sexy. Misty Davis is a proud Texan and member of the NRA.

Chet Davis owner of the first pot store in Texas

Portrayed by Carl Stoneking
Portrayed by Carl Stoneking

Big, loud, sweaty and prone to shouting “yee-haw,” Chet Davis is slow witted but full of energy. If Misty is the manager of the business then Chet is the mascot and he fully embraces that role. A dapper goofball with a big heart, Mr. Davis so desperately wants to be Texas personified. Chet is madly in love with his wife and welcomes the changes that have swept across the nation. He loves weed and watching his alma mater’s fast pitch softball team play, almost as much as he misses Willie Nelson. Chet Davis is the Texan of the future, drained of toxic masculinity then filled with pot smoke and tolerance.

Haley Clarke budtender at the first pot store in Texas

Portrayed by Christina Parrish
Portrayed by Christina Parrish

Haley is a 22-year-old retired webcam girl who is having a quarter-life crisis. She is really jaded ya'll, but after all the things she witnessed at her old job it is totally justified. Haley is constantly bombarded with lavish gifts and proposals from her diverse collection of ex-clients, something she does her best to ignore. Smart and witty, Haley's opinion, which at times can be frightening, is rarely unknown. In her free time she enjoys partaking in recreational activities from the past, like reading leather bound books or doing blood magic.

Ken Douglas budtender at the first pot store in Texas

Portrayed by Kenah Benefield
Portrayed by Kenah Benefield

Homeschooled by his NASA rocket scientist parents, Ken is a 20-year-old genius PHD student with a passionate love of science and crippling fear of violence. He is a nerd in the classic 80’s sense, going even as far as snorting while laughing. Ken says he applied to work at Texas’s first weed store so he could study the cannabis plant, but the truth is he wants to learn more about people.

Lance Miller security guard first pot store in Texas

Portrayed by Conor Sullivan
Portrayed by Conor Sullivan

Lance doesn't find many things funny. Especially after he was laid off by the Houston Police Department when marijuana prohibition ended. Lance speaks in a deep monotone voice and his words are chosen very deliberately. Longing for the days when he was known as officer Miller, Lance has never smoked pot and still doesn’t understand how anyone would chose weed over a Lone Star Beer. He loves Emmitt Smith, still hates Obama and hopes that one day he will wake up from the nightmare that has unfolded in his country over the last several years.

Manuel Marco owner of rival business

Manuel is the leader of a family business that is in direct competition with the Davis's store. His family has lived in Freedom county for five generations with many members engrained deep into the community. Manuel is a loving husband to his wife, Lupe and father to his sons, Nelson and Jorge, who both work for him. He adores his grandchildren and spends most of his free time with them, taking special interest in their lives. As a business man, Manuel is ruthless and cunning, and he will stop at nothing to insure his family's continued prosperity.

Jorge Marco works for a rival business

Portrayed by Javier Ungo
Portrayed by Javier Ungo

Jorge, Manuel’s youngest son and most trusted employee, might speak softly but when necessary he commands Spanish or English with confidence. Jorge is a very astute businessman and tactician, who rarely gets flustered. He at times is the only voice of reason in the family and isn’t afraid to take the unproven path in finding a solution to a problem. Jorge is the only unmarried child of Lupe and Manuel Marco, a fact of which they constantly remind him. He dates but has found it hard to find a suitable match from the pool of single men in Big River.

Nelson Marco works for a rival business

Portrayed by Ben Bazan
Portrayed by Ben Bazan

Nelson is Manuel's oldest son and best friend. Like his dad, Nelson Marco is an attentive father and husband. He is the coach of his son’s little league team and teaches Sunday school every week. In his free time Nelson is an aspiring BBQ master who has spent the last five years trying to perfect a smoked brisket. He takes a more blue collar role in the family business and is frequently chided for his aggressive behavior. He speaks very slowly and is often mistaken for being stupid, which he is not.

Molly O'Connor local pothead

Portrayed by Molly Moore
Portrayed by Molly Moore

Slow thinking and slow moving; Molly is always high as fuck. The prototypical stoner with a heart of gold: she is a consistent source of surprise and slapstick humor. Molly loves world star hip hop videos, but not the new ones and can't wait for Avatar 5 this summer.

What is our plan?

If our campaign is successful we will shoot the series over 8 days in the last two weeks of September. Then spend the next 4 weeks editing, so we can have a cut ready to submit to festivals that occur in the early part of 2019.

Once those early deadlines pass we can begin the more detailed post production work with the goal of having a polished season one ready for viewing in early 2019.

Where will your contributions go?

We have all the preproduction done that we can possibly do at this point. The only things left to do require your help. We need to lock in our locations, arrange equipment rentals, cast Manuel Marco and hire the rest of our crew.

We have formed great relationships with people working in the Austin film community so all of our extremely talented cast and crew members work at discounted rates. What we are asking for is the bare minimum we need to complete season one, which will be around an hour in length.

Estimated Budget Breakdown

  • Crew $6,000
  • Equipment Rental $3,000
  • Actors $2,800
  • Locations $2,800
  • Post Production Sound $2,000
  • Kickstarter Fees $2,000
  • Craft services $1,800
  • Insurance $1,400
  • Props & Costumes $1,000
  • Original Music $1,000
  • Festival entry fees $700
  • Kickstarter Rewards $500

Who are we?

Alex Ybarra and Carl Stoneking started Dream Shake Productions after they met at Texas Tech University and bonded over their love of comedy and Hakeem Olajuwon. After a brief hiatus to pursue more "traditional" career paths, in 2015 Carl and Alex both relocated to Austin, Texas to engage in film-making more aggressively. Over the past 3 years they have partnered with local writers, stand-up comedians, improvisors, musicians and other creatives to produce award winning short comedy films. In addition to releasing sketch comedy on YouTube, they recently completed a sci-fi comedy web-series, Toddumentaries, which has already been an official selection at SeriesFest, Melbourne WebFest, and Hollyshorts Film Festival 2018.

Rewards

In addition to getting to see the series you funded become a reality we are also offering other rewards for our backers.

Risks and challenges

Having a successful Kickstarter campaign will eliminate most of the risks that we have traditionally encountered. Our last web series, "Toddumentaries," was completed on a much smaller budget and in a tighter window of time. So with "High From Texas," we are extremely confident in our abilities to complete a really funny, well produced 60 minutes of content.

The major risk we face is the director, one of the main actors or director of photography having an emergency that would force them to be somewhere else during our scheduled shoot dates.

The other risk we face is an "act of God" type event occurring right before or during production. Some weather catastrophe or a fire that prevents us from shooting at our locations is very unlikely but still a risk.

We will have insurance to protect us from any financial loss that should occur from such instances. Ultimately though, all the risks we face would only delay the completion of the project, not stop it all together.

We have hilarious scripts, an experienced director with a clear vision, an overqualified crew, and an extremely funny and talented cast. As long as the world keeps turning, with your help, we will get this thing done.

Thank you for checking out our campaign.

Cheers,

Alex, Carl & the rest of the "High From Texas" cast and crew.
