During my time in Venice working with the Venice Printmaking Studio, I will focus my efforts into creating a series of works reflective of the city’s illustrious past. Looking to the artistic creations made by the artists who lived in city of Venice and its territories during the republic's Golden Age, the 16th century, I seek to create several large-scale woodblock prints that are allegorical in nature similar to the famous paintings, drawings and frescoes of Venice’s great masters. With this opportunity to explore places like the Doge’s Palace and Galleria dell' Accademia, I seek to find inspiration in the creation of at least two woodblock prints depicting the lives of Christian Saints. I am inspired by the emblematic drawings created in Venice by Titian during the 16th century, most particularly his drawing “Landscape With St. Theodore Overcoming the Dragon.” My goal is to incorporate similar thematic conceptions by creating prints that take religious iconography and re-tell the story through symbolic imagery and interpretation. I am committed to doing a piece about St. Ursula, whose martyrdom came at the hand of marauding Huns somewhere at sea while she was en-route to Rome. Based on the fact that Venice was Italy’s main sea travel thoroughfare and that the Huns invaded Venice several times throughout history makes it an ideal setting to create a piece about this lesser-known saint’s demise.
By working on a larger scale I seek to get out of my comfort zone of doing small, very detailed etchings.I believe that my working in a less forgiving medium such as woodblock will advance my rendering skills. The Venice Printmaking studio is the ideal setting for me to take on printing on a large scale because they are equipped with incredible presses with printing surfaces of 140 x 250 cm (or 59" x 98"!) I plan on using a variety of mediums in the completion of my prints, including hand-coloring with watercolor and gold-leafing techniques. In this way each print pulled will be unique and will highlight different aspects of the story.
I know that while in Venice I will be inspired by living in such close proximity to other artists and by the amazing city itself. I will expand my artistic vocabulary by pushing myself to create bigger images than I have created in the past and explore new channels of creation by developing my skills with woodblock printing; this is an area I haven’t had as much experience with as compared to copper-plate etching or lithography. Through the use of watercolors and gold-leafing techniques, I will enhance each print individually and create unique pieces as well as complete editions. I am excited at the prospect of this opportunity and look forward with much anticipation to my future involvement with the Venice Printmaking Studio on the isle of Murano.
And now for a little background information on where I will be going:
The Venice Printmaking Studio is a non-profit international studio devoted to large-format printmaking and artist’s books. It encourages the exploration of traditional as well as experimental printmaking practices and ideas. Located on the island of Murano, its facilities allow for large, medium and small format intaglio etching, screenprinting, relief printing, artist’s books, and letterpress. Through its residency programs, workshops, exhibitions, community projects and printmaking ventures the Venice Printmaking Studio is a contemporary space in the Venice region.
Here is where you come in!
I am seeking support through this Kickstarter campaign to help with the cost of travel and materials. Unfortunately, it is pretty expensive to fly into Venice because they have a much smaller airport than say a city such as Rome. Flights out of Denver are not cheap; it will cost me around $1380 to get there and home again and I need your help!
If I receive support beyond my goal amount I will use those funds to purchase the materials I will need to complete my prints, and to help with the cost of shipping before and after the residency.
To show my appreciation for your support, I want to share a piece of my experience with you. That is why I am offering handmade prints, postcards and bookmarks as my rewards. Each piece will be relevant to the time I spend at the Venice Printmaking Studio. Below are some sample of my etchings which will hopefully give you an idea of what you can expect to receive as a supporter!
Risks and challenges
Every time an artist takes their creative abilities in a new direction there are many obstacles that might prevent the success of these new endeavors. These obstacles can be looked upon as those rare moments in one's career when patience, reflection, perseverance, intellect and faith in ones abilities are drawn into play. I believe in myself and my abilities to overcome any obstacle put before me in both my personal life and my life's work as an artist.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
