Excelsior – An Inspired Steampunk Pen and Paper RPG
A Steampunk Pen and Paper RPG drawing inspiration from the classics of literature that gave rise to the Steampunk movement!
Welcome to the world of Excelsior! Excelsior is a Steampunk Pen and Paper RPG set in the Victorian era in the midst of the rapid population growth brought on by the advances in technology and medicine during that age. The leaders of the world realize that exploring the remaining uncharted areas of the world are their only hope to deal with this population explosion. The governments of the world have pooled their resources to create the three largest exploration and colonization ships in history in order to find a new part of the world that man can colonize and harvest resources. Things don't go exactly as planned when the explorers find themselves in a completely unexplored part of the world and having to deal with the internal and external dangers that are found within it.
A number of Steampunk RPGs have been funded through Kickstarter over the last year and you're probably thinking, what makes this one different and worthy of my support? Excelsior strives to adhere more closely to the settings and stories found in the literary works that inspired the Steampunk aesthetic, namely by writers such has Jules Verne and HG Wells with a few esoteric sprinkles of HP Lovecraft and other authors of that genre and era. We offer a variety of backer levels so our backers not only make the story of Excelsior a reality, they become part of it.
The writing, editing, and preliminary play testing is complete, but we need your help to finance the great art we are looking to incorporate into the 150+ page core book to ensure that our vision of Excelsior is accurately represented within its pages. We've also been lucky enough to enlist the talents of renowned pen and paper RPG artist Imaginos Workshop's Mark Dudley, whose most notable work has been seen throughout various source books for the Palladium Books game Rifts, as well as Robotech the RPG. We also have the one, the only John Zeleznik working on the cover as well as some interior illustrations. John’s clients include Marvel Entertainment, Hasbro, Mattel, Playboy, Palladium Books, Wizards of the Coast, WizKids, and FASA Corp, amongst many other well-known names. We might get more heavy hitters if we reach our stretch goals!!!
Excelsior takes place during post Industrial Revolution times, where advances in technology and medicine have enabled mankind to enjoy a level of prosperity that was formerly only dreamed of. However, the downside of such prosperity has been the rapid population growth over the last fifty years and the increase in border skirmishes and wars to this growth that many throughout the world have attributed it to. The leaders of the world recognize that between the escalating conflict for resources and devastating tools of war that modern countries have available to them, mankind's first global conflict may be inevitable.
The leaders of the world put their resources together to create the largest convoy ever assembled in the history of man to explore the remaining uncharted areas of the world for purposes of colonization and resource prospecting. Many of the world's top scientists and engineers join the voyage in hopes that these parts of the world may hold new scientific findings and insight related to the origins of man. Things don't go as planned and the surviving colonists find themselves in a place that is definitely not part of the world they knew. We don't want to give too much away, but we like to think that the picture that we're (and that includes you, dear reader!) painting with the story of Excelsior has something for all fans of the Steampunk genre as well RPG gamers that are looking to branch out their play with a new setting and rule system.
We have detailed rules for using and creating inventions and provide rules for characters that want to enhance themselves using BioMechanics.
Our percentile combat and skill test rule system is something that new and experienced players alike will understand and pick up quickly to allow for vivid storytelling and fast combat without having to memorize lots of proprietary game terms and keeping track of lots of specialized dice.
The core character classes that we are introducing in this book allow players get an opportunity to role play within their favorite type of Steampunk in the world of Excelsior:
The Scrapper: You are the brute squad! You're in the front lines of battle taking on dangerous enemies with the biggest weapon you can swing with both hands.
The Punk: Who needs to work when there are so many pigeons to pluck! You come from out of nowhere to make precise, surgical strikes, only to fade back into the shadows.
The Marksman: You're a big game hunter that prefers to use his trusty shooting irons to take foes down while the "riff-raff" gets their hands dirty with the toe to toe fighting.
Physician: You're responsible for keeping your comrades stitched together and making sure that that your opponents are having a very bad day.
Aegis: You are the pilot of the group and can navigate the world using a variety of vehicles, including mechanized suits of armor capable of absorbing and dealing out massive amounts of damage.
Inventor: You create devices (that mostly work) to enhance your own abilities or those of your comrades. You can partner with a Physician in your party to install Biomechanical enhancements on other people.
B. Wraven Wright: Founder, Head Writer, Head Designer, and Chief Art Director for 2Die10 Games. Mr. Wright has ghostwritten for a variety of OGL D20 projects under various pseudonyms over the years and decided to strike out on his own two years ago by founding 2Die10 Games and creating Excelsior.
Christine Hoyler: Graphic Designer and Head Layout Artist. Christine has had a long career as a professional graphic designer and consultant whose client list includes: The Discovery Channel, American Apparel, Disney, MGM, and Newline Cinema. She is a gamer in the true sense of the word and plays a variety of card, board, and online games.
Niklaus Evron: Assistant Layout Artist. A recent graduate from the Art Center College of Design, Nik is an avid RPG fan and Steampunk who is looking to bring his unique sense to style to the pages of Excelsior.
Risks and challenges
Let's talk turkey for a moment, shall we? Kickstarter projects tend of have their fair share of delays related to unanticipated issues and obstacles that litter the road to putting out the funded product as promised. It would be foolish to tell you that we've figured everything out, and that it will be nothing but smooth sailing to a release prior to December 2013, our estimated release date based on the 150 page version we currently have planned (subject to change with successful stretch goals met). What we can tell you is that we have quite a number of years of related project management experience, have contingency planning and budgeting and are capable of rolling with the punches in terms of organization and time management challenges. We've also backed a number of projects and definitely understand the importance of communication and transparency. On top of this, getting this book made and into your hands is our dream and we are willing to do what it takes to make sure it gets across the finish line. We hope to see you in Excelsior and we thank you for your support!
