Note: We wanted to create a short, digestible (ha) prototype where you can tackle some baddies and feature some basic combat mechanics. This is a work in progress, does not represent the final game and is subject to change. Any and all feedback is welcome - good luck, doctor!

PS. This build has only had limited testing and optimizations but wanted to give everyone something to sink their teeth into, so expect some bugs!

 

 

Hi! We're the Thar Be Monsters team! Founded in 2015 by three AAA industry artists that wanted to create a game inspired by colorful and gross Saturday morning cartoons.

Our team has worked on a lot over the years, from indie to AAA -- including League of Legends, Darksiders 2, Enter the Gungeon, and Ori and the Blind Forest! We've been around the block before, and we've got a serious passion for making games.

Blubber Busters is a 2D action platformer with an emphasis on frantic combat. Space whales have problems -- Lots of problems -- from bizarre bacteria to pesky parasites and everything in between, and they need your help! We're big fans of 90s-era combat platformers, and are especially inspired by games like Mega Man X, Metal Slug and the Metroid series! Blubber Busters is definitely snuggled up in that same blanket and we aim to make something that stands toe-to-toe with the greats.

Whales come to you for help, and who are you to turn them down? Pick your patient and get out there! Each afflicted whale effectively works as a single stage with its own set of problems and objectives you need to solve to help get it happy and healthy again. A whale with a stomach ache may have you trekking down into the stomach to clear out unwanted debris while dodging digestive acids, or a parasite infection may have you wiping out swaths of critters before taking on their queen!

Swap between crew members to tackle each situation. Switch to the more agile Eva to climb a wall, burn through barriers with Rudy's flamethrower or kick-start machinery with some juice from Emmett's defibrillators! Or just cycle between all of them to give infections a thrashing. There's no I in team, so get to know the whole crew!

Treating patients earns you cash! As you play, the whales who show up to your orbital "waiting room" will start exhibiting more and more acute symptoms; you'll have to quickly decide how to optimize your exploration for upgrades and needs for cash against the growing demands of your patients.

Deck out your crew! Enhance their abilities, making them stronger, faster, and more effective! Give their health a boost or add some pep to their punches.

Upgrades don't come free and some need to be researched! You'll even be able to research entire new abilities to help you do what doctors do best.

Upgrade your space station! Your run-down clinic can't function without a solid crew and proper resources! Expand to accommodate more patients or build a lab to analyze new infections and get an edge with the latest tech -- spend that down-time growing your space station from a gutted wreck into a thriving medical facility!

 

 

 

Humans and space whales live in harmony among the stars. Why? Because we need them and they need us. The whales provide us with transport across the galaxy, access to resources and materials, and much-needed companionship and in return they only ask that we keep them healthy. For being such an ancient species living in deep space, they're not too bright and get themselves into all sorts of trouble.

Their docile and cuddly demeanors make for perfect company in the lonely expanse, so what kind of monster WOULDN'T do their best to make sure they're happy and disease-free?

Naturally, clinics have sprung up across the stars offering these magnificent beasts relief from whatever ails them in return for a number of goods and/or services. Usually cash.

A new mutation has started manifesting in the patients causing all sorts of aggressive behaviors in these otherwise sweet and docile space beasts. One by one, clinics across the stars have started to go dark. Rudy -- a lowly janitor -- was on break and missed all the murder, so he's all the poor whales have left!

Follow Rudy and his crew as they take on the burden of keeping these burdensome beasts healthy in a world packed with guts, eccentric aliens and quack doctors! As you race to save every patient that comes to your door, a sinister plot is unfolding... Good luck, Doctor!

  • They suffer from indigestion, cholesterol-caked blood vessels, alien head-colds, virus-ridden prosthetics, infected bowels, and even genetic disorders. Do what needs to get done, there’s no medical board watching over your shoulder in space.

 

We're set to launch on Steam for PC, but with your help we can reach stretch goals that can get the game on other platforms like Mac, Linux, PS4 & Xbox One!

Avery's work is inspired by comic book artists like Joe Mad (creator of Battle Chasers and artist for various Marvel comics), which we think will give Blubber Busters a style and unique look all its own!

All of our characters and enemies are 2D renders of animated 3D models. This gives us the freedom and speed of 3D animation while still harmonizing with stylish 2D effects!

We’re extremely excited to announce that Chris Christodoulou - of Deadbolt and Risk of Rain fame - will be joining us to compose the soundtrack for Blubber Busters! He's coming at you with a pumping retro electronic sound that jives with our art style perfectly!

Chris has already been helping us set the tone for Blubber Busters, and we have three audio tracks that we can share!

Breakdown

 

As a funding solution, Kickstarter affords us the most independence, control, and artistic freedom. Most of our team is remote, but our core members will be moving closer to work under the same roof. We'll all be basically living in a small, hobbit-like commune scrabbling with one another for an extra flavor-packet for our ramen noodles. But we'll be making a game - a game that we really believe in!

This game is our passion project, and what you see already is the culmination of months of work through late nights, weekends, and some missed engagements. Most of us were wholly unpaid thus far - the others, paid out-of-pocket for their services by the core team. These out-of-pocket funds are starting to run dry, and so it's come to the point that if Blubber Busters is to become a reality, we need to focus on it - full time.

We strongly value being transparent and listening to our community - a great trait that we've learned from working at Riot. We want to make sure that our game is just as fun for us as it is for you, and we hope for your feedback throughout development to make that happen!

Risks and challenges

Our biggest risks come from the fact that game development is sometimes unpredictable and when that happens scheduling can be effected.

Luckily, every core member of the team has more than five years experience working in game development and has seen at least one shipped title. We've been through the scoping and development process and we're confident that we've budgeted time appropriately given our funds. Should several designs take more iterations than previously estimated, we have several publishers and investors already courting us, so we're willing to entertain those options to ensure that the best game is brought to you!
