The Cold Call is a short film based on an essay written by Indian-American author Rahul Mehta which was published in the New York Times in the fall of 2011. The film is a social drama that explores the immigrant story, sexuality and self discovery.
ABOUT THE STORY
Naveen is in his first year at university. Like any other typical freshman, Naveen is concerned about his friends, his grades, and adjusting to life away from home. However, Naveen is not like any other typical freshman. Coming from a traditional Indian household unaccepting of anything different, he has a deep desire to finally live his life openly as a gay man. Yet, the only person who knows of his sexuality is his best friend, Summer.
One night that all changes. Naveen receives a cold call from a complete stranger with promises of an illicit encounter which until this point had only dwelled in Naveen's fantasies. Filled with curiosity and the nerve to finally explore his sexuality, Naveen agrees to meet the caller. This meeting could offer not just what Naveen wants, but perhaps what he really needs.
When I read this essay I immediately wanted to adapt it into a short film. I envisioned the story unfold visually. The Cold Call has many dynamics I believe will resonate with a diverse audience.
The most important voice in this story is that of LGBT youth that are imprisoned by the deeply rooted cultural beliefs of their parents. They are immigrant's sons and daughters born and raised in western societies that offer them more room for self expression. The internal conflict of these individuals are ever so profound when they have to suppress who they are for the sake of cultural beliefs.
In a progressively changing nation that's becoming more accepting of the gay community, we can see change being reflected in our very own legal system and pop culture. However, unsupported LGBT youth are struggling day in and day out with their internal conflicts surrounding their sexuality. This light hearted movie gives an objective introspective to that of a indian-american college student who faces the same challenges.
Although this film's main character is Indian-American, the issue of 'coming out' which this story illustrates is one that knows no nationality, race, sex or religion. LGBT youth across the board eventually have to face this issue. A film of this nature sheds light into these challenges and could serve as a source of inspiration.
Based on a true story, Naveen's encounter is definitely worthy of being put on screen. It's an entertaining coming of age drama that will have you reminiscing about overcoming obstacles to come out or being in college, liberated from your parents and their ideas and empowered with the liberty to shape your own destiny.
The team coming together to realize this film is a team of filmmakers with considerable experience in producing high quality work, an unparellel level of commitment, and completely in tune with each other's dynamics.
From our co-producer Tanya Brum who has worked with me on short films and has gone on to produce feature independent projects, to award winning DP Till Neumann who has extensive experience in shooting commercials, music videos and feature films, we couldn't be more excited to get this project started.

PRE-PRODUCTION: Is in full swing. With your help we are excited to get closer to meeting our financial goal so we can start to book and commit to the people and elements necessary to make this the best that it can be.
PRODUCTION: We will require six shoot days for this project. We are a very disciplined group of people and barring any unforeseen obstacles, we are confident that we will complete shooting in October of 2013, shooting in New York City & Boston.
POST PRODUCTION: Will begin immediately after production. We plan to deliver the finished product by end of November 2013. In time for submissions to upcoming winter festivals.

Our goal for this fundraiser is to raise money to complete our film and send it to film festivals, our target being the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival. To finish our film, we have to hire people beyond our crew.
Although most of the crew will be donating their time, there are some key positions that need to be filled. Our budget encompasses every line item that will ensure that we can complete this picture successfully. Collectively with all pledges, we can make this happen!

Donations towards this project go directly to financing equipment rental, insurance and shoot permit costs, production vehicle rentals, set build, talent and more!
Our aim is not to cut corners with a "just get it done" approach. Our budget is sensible but it is also a blueprint for a professional production; our crew will consist of working film and TV professionals and while some of them will lend us their time and skills for scaled rates or for free, our practices and set operations will otherwise be industry standard.
The need for fiscal support cannot be overstated, but we'll keep this request brief; we invite you into a partnership that begins with a generous monetary donation and ends with a finished work that could not have been made without your support.

Risks and challenges
When it comes to fulfillment of rewards, the only variable subject to change is the estimated date of delivery. All rewards are guaranteed pending success of the campaign.
If the film shoot stays on schedule for Fall 2013, delivery dates will likely be as stated. If the shoot date shifts due to logistics, all backers will be informed and will be kept up-to-date on revisions to the fulfillment schedule.
Filmmaking is a collaboration. Success depends on the team's ability to coalesce around the goal of making a great movie and on the commitment, creativity and vision of the team's leaders.
